The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why. These delicate shells come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and even a rare blue. Whole families are involved in collecting the shells and carefully sorting them by size and color. The intricate craftsmanship that goes into a Niihau Shell Lei makes each one a prized possession. Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Elevation: 1,476 feet (450 m) - Kahoolawe 10,023 feet (3,055 m) - Maui The Island of Maui is made of two volcanoes: West Maui and East Maui.Most of the West Maui shield (20.9N, 156.6W) formed between 2-1.3 millionyears ago. A central caldera has been identified roughly in the area ofthe present-day Iao Valley. Alkalic basalts capped the volcano about 1.2million years ago. Four small eruptions occurred during the rejuvenatedstage on West Maui, probably about 1 million years ago. The volcano isdeeply dissected by numerous valleys. West Maui has not erupted inhistoric time and is considered to be extinct . East Maui Volcano, often also (but incorrectly) called Haleakala, is the easternmost of the twoshield volcanoes that make the Island of Maui. East Maui Volcano (20.7N, 156.2W)is the third largest Hawaiian shield volcano. Three rift zones can beclearly seen in the above Space Shuttle photograph(compare with map below). Most of thevolcanic activity has been concentrated along the southwest and east riftzones. The impressive Haleakala Crater is at the summit of the volcano.Haleakala Crater is an erosional caldera, formed by the coalescence ofthe heads of two large valleys as they eroded into the volcano. The mainshield of Haleakala is more than 800,000 years old. Lava flows andpyroclastics of the capping stage range in age from 930,000 to 350,000years old. Rejuvenated-stage volcanic rocks occur along the rift zonesand in the crater. The most recent eruption of Haleakala was in about1790 at La Perouse Bay. Haleakala is considered an active volcanobecause this eruption is in historic time for Hawaii. Kahoolawe (20.5N, 156.6W) is one of the smallest shield volcanoes in theHawaiian Islands. Kahoolawe is the island near the bottom of the slide.The lava flows that make the main shield are 1-2 million years old. Waveerosion has exposed a caldera on the eastside of the island . Lucy Pemoni / Reuters By CruiseCritic staff GETTING THERE For most travelers, the challenge of getting to and from Hawaii is the only negative on this itinerary. Flights from the East Coast typically connect in Los Angeles and San Francisco, which means you're adding a five-plus hour flight to the six hours it took to get there from New York, say, or Boston. If you have little ones with you and can spare the time, you may want to consider spending a night or two in California to break up the travel time. Obviously, West Coast residents have a shorter haul, and folks in some central gateways, such as Minneapolis and Dallas, can find direct flights to Honolulu International Airport that take about 8 1/2 hours each. Keep in mind that the Christmas holiday season - from about Dec. 21 to Jan. 4 - is high season, which means that air prices are at their most expensive. Summer is also popular because it's "family season." Thanksgiving to mid-December is considered "low season" and offers the best bargains. While NCL is currently the only cruise line originating and ending in Hawaii, other lines offer Hawaii itineraries that sail to or from the west coast of the U.S., Mexico or Canada. The advantage of cruising from the mainland is that you eliminate one or both flights, but keep in mind that you could be adding as many as eight days at sea to the duration of the voyage. Also remember that one-way air fares can be expensive, so you may be better off booking air through the cruise lines and taking advantage of their bulk air rates. THE ISLANDS The islands you are likely to visit on a roundtrip Honolulu cruise and cruises to-and-from the West Coast are Oahu (Honolulu), Maui, the Big Island (ports of Kona or Hilo), Kauai and even Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati. Lanai and Molokai are typically only available as shore excursions from the main islands. Repositioning cruises may only visit Oahu and Maui, while also incorporating such South Seas destinations as Bora Bora, Tahiti, Fiji and New Zealand. MANEUVERING AROUND HONOLULU Oahu's cruise port, the Aloha Tower Marketplace, is located about 15 minutes from the airport, and transportation from the airport to area hotels (about seven miles) is a snap via shuttle service (about $18 roundtrip on Aloha Hawaii Trans, for example), taxi or car rental. If you rent a car at the airport, keep in mind that, unlike some other islands you may have visited, Honolulu operates like any other American city - which means you won't experience culture shock navigating the roads. If you are simply transferring from the airport to the cruise port, plan on a 15-minute cab ride. Be aware, however, that the return trip from the cruise port to the airport can be another matter entirely - with daunting crowds at the buses (we suggest springing for a cab) and long delays at some of the terminals at the security check point. Waits of up to two hours are not unheard of if you're trying to leave at the same time as everyone else. Our advice? Stay a few extra days (Oahu deserves a week if you can swing it) or at least consider departing at night for a red eye flight home that will put you on the West Coast in time for breakfast or on the East Coast in the afternoon. BEING THERE Most Hawaiian Island cruises begin and/or end in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu - the most logical in terms of air access. It being the port of embarkation - or debarkation - means passengers often are hurrying from the airport to the ship or hustling away to catch a flight home. But don't forego a pre- or post-cruise stay if you can afford the time because there is so much to see on Oahu. From whale watching and surfing on the stunning beaches of the North Shore to the Polynesian Cultural Center and Pearl Harbor, the island has attractions to appeal to a wide variety of interests.
