Opportunities for fun are virtually endless. So, what do you want to do first? You might start by checking out the various outdoor sports and other activities that are available on the island. In addition to several outstanding resort courses, there are also some excellent public courses. What puts all these golf courses in a class above those you might play elsewhere, is their location. Most come with an inspiring ocean view or spectacular mountain backdrop. Click here for more golf info. Go to Golf Courses HORSEBACK RIDING Of all the ways to explore Kauai, from horseback must be among the best. There are scenic trails that follow along the coast. Trips up Hanalei Valley, a place that hasn't changed much in the past one thousand years. Other trails take you to Haupu Valley, along the beach and past the coves of Mahaulepu Beach, or down into Waimea Canyon, known as the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific.' Go to Stables FISHING Kauai is a popular spot for both freshwater and saltwater anglers. Large- and smallmouth bass are taken in Kauai's inland reservoirs. Marlin, ahi, ono, and aku are found in abundance off Kauai's south and east coasts. There also are special charters available that will carry you near the private island of Niihau for giant tuna and marlin. That's great news if you enjoy hiking, because it means there's a lot of island out there waiting to be explored on foot. Of course, before you set out you'll need to know where you're going. Write to the Hawaii Geographic Society, P.O. Box 1698, Honolulu, HI 96806, and ask for their information packet. A good book on the subject, Hawaiian Hiking Trails, by Craig Chisholm, offers trail descriptions by someone who has been there. You can also contact the Sierra Club, Kauai Group at http://www.hi.sierraclub.org/Kauai/kauai.html . Any of the above will prove helpful to your planning. Good maps are also necessary. The University of Hawaii Press Reference Map of Kauai is available from the Hawaii Geographic Society and at bookstores on Kauai. Maps may also be obtained from the State Division of Forestry, P.O. Box 1671, Lihue, Kauai, HI 96766. Three of Kauai's best trails: The Kukui Trail This 5-mile (round trip) trail drops 2,000 feet into spectacular Waimea Canyon, and offers the shortest route to the canyon floor. There's a large swimming hole at the bottom. The trail begins off the Iliau Loop Trail. The Kuilau Ridge Trail This 4.2-mile (round trip) hike offers dramatic views of small waterfalls and a wealth of flora. The trailhead is about a mile beyond the University of Hawaii Agricultural Experimental Station on Route 580. The Kalalau Trail This is the original Hawaiian trail into Kalalau Valley, and offers dramatic views of Na Pali Coast and Kee Beach. It begins at Kee Beach where Highway 56 ends. Two miles inland is Hanakapiai Falls, which cascades 300 feet to a pool below. The trail travels on to Kalalau Valley, and many hikers camp overnight at Hanakapiai and before continuing on the next day. The entire trip is best made by experienced hikers. Go to Land Activities WINDSURFING Anini Beach Park and Kalapaki Beach are both good places for windsurfing, especially Anini Beach because it said to have more consistent wind. On the south coast, Poipu Beach is also an excellent choice. For the more advanced, Haena Beach on the north shore is a great spot. The water is clear, with visibility averaging about 50 feet, and sea life is abundant. Go to Water Activities CAMPING Photo by: Kayak Kauai Kauai's county and state parks are ideal for camping. Both require permits. Permits for camping at county parks are issued for seven days, and enable you to camp in one location for seven consecutive days - and a total of up to 60 days at all county parks. Permits cost $3 per person per night, with children under 18 free. State park permits are free, and allow camping for five consecutive days. It is suggested that permits for state and county parks be requested up to one year in advance of arrival, especially for popular areas such as the Na Pali coast and Kokee. For other areas, try approximately one month in advance for the winter and six months in advance for the summer. The State Division of Forestry also offers camping permits for sites in the forest reserves. Everyone who has had thegood luck to sail at Maui long enough (including myself) has a great story to tell, infact, many great stories . . . breaking or losing half of their sailing equipment on theinfamous and dreaded Hookipa "rocks" and the feeling of absolute terror in theimpact zone with not a breath of wind in your sail.On a given day, Maui has a greatervariety of sailing conditions for all levels of boardsailors than anywhere in the world.Maui's motto says it all :"MAUI NO KA OI". Translated it's :Maui is thebest.This is truly a place designed for Windsurfing. Hookipa Sailing Conditions: For those looking for high winds: visit Maui in thesummer. From May to August, the northeast trade winds average 15 to 25 miles/hr, with manydays in the 20 to 30 mile/hr range. The summer is also when the wave swell is at itssmallest. For those who are looking for Maui's famous surf: visit it when there are bothtrades and waves - spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). From Decemberto February, the northeasterlies are less consistent, but there are still great sailingdays during this time - big wave days especially! During the winter, Kona storms willbring in 10-to 20-knot southwesterlies to the south shore. The sailing is side-onshore,port tack, with conditions similar to lake sailing. Another typical winter occurrence is5-to 15-knot northerlies. These winds funnel between the West Maui Mountains and theHaleakala Crater creating great side-offshore, slalom sailing on the south shore. Sailing Spots: KANAHA BEACH PARK - Kanaha is abeautiful beach park with long, sandy beaches, grassy area for rigging, fresh watershowers, shading trees, and picnic tables, all located in Kahului on the northshore.Sideshore northeast tradewinds blow consistently during June - August, with typically flatwater sailing on the inside, and good bump and jump conditions on the outside. BetweenOctober and May you can find waves on the outside reefs, ranging from small wind swell toexpert wave riding conditions. Most windsurf schools operate at Kanaha because of theconsistent wind and warm water. All year round it is a perfect place for any level sailor. SPRECKELSVILLE / CAMP ONE - Up the coast fromKanaha there is a residential area called Spreckelsville which has many beautiful sandybeaches. The main area to sail is affectionately known as "Sprecks", whichprovides pristine blue-green water and white sandy beach. Parking is limited, so arriveearly. There are no facilities or showers. The sailing level is typically intermediate toadvanced, with the reef making for more chop and breaking waves. Camp One is a no frillsbeach at the end of the Kahului Airport runway. The place has no showers, no grass riggingareas, no toilet, and barely a trash can. It does have a beautiful beach and the onlybreaking waves for most of the summer. The place is frequented by German's, Australians,Italians, French and mean local windsurfers. It's a place where you want to be polite andfollow the local traditions and laws to the letter. Rude and unlawfull windsurfers havebeen known to get worked (on the shore too). HOOKIPA - Hookipa is the windsurfingmecca of the world. Host to World Cup sailing and surfing contests, Hookipa rips. Jaggedlava rock, exposed reefs, a gnarly shorebreak, light inside winds and powerful ripcurrents make this north shore difficult to launch off limits for most sailors. Expertslaunch from the Beach Park, just downwind from the pavillion. Expect crowds, with manysailors lulling around the outside and looking for a good wave to rip on the inside. Whenthe water flattens in the summer months, slalom sailors launch here at Hookipa and blastdownwind along the north shore. KIHEI - Kihei is the south shore's mostpopular windsurfing spot. When the tradewinds blow north/northeast the pavillion locatedat the intersection of Ohukai Street and South Kihei Road is a great place to sail. Thereef can be shallow on the inside, especially near the Maui Sunset, so consult the localsbefore venturing out. Kihei is good for all level sailors and has a variety ofaccommodations nearby! Different Styles of Hawaiian Shirts Different Types of Hawaiian Shirts There are different types of Hawaiian shirts based on the style or layout of the design. The most common ones are the basic all-over print and the scenic print. But there are variations within these types well as several other styles. We'll also cover some of the terminology used for Hawaiian shirts. All of our shirts are made in Hawaii with great care and with special attention to the details like matched pockets. Basic All-Over Print Hawaiian shirts: These shirts are probably the most common shirts. They are characterized by a repeating print that appears all over the fabric in a uniform manner as illustrated to the left. These shirts can be worn tucked in our out. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Scenic Print Hawaiian shirts: The scenic shirts are similar to the all-over print shirts in that the details in the print repeat in a uniform matter. The only difference is that these shirts contain scenery rather than just a simple repeating image of a flower or leaf. For some people, the scenic prints conjure up feelings of freedom and being on vacation. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Panel Hawaiian shirts: Some shirts have prints that are laid out in vertical panels, usually flowers and/or leaves. Like the basic all-over prints and the scenic prints, the panel designs have repeating patterns, but they repeat as you go from one side of the shirt to the other, rather than all over the shirt. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Border Hawaiian shirts: Shirts that have a design going across the shirt are called border Hawaiian shirts. Most of these shirts have a design in them that repeat every 10-12 inches as you go from one side of the shirt to the other. If the design happens to go across the bottom of the shirt, they may be called a Bottom Design Hawaiian shirt . The shirt illustrated at left is a border shirt that also happens to be a bottom print. Border Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked. Matched Prints: Some border or bottom print Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image at the buttons. The shirt to the left, unlike the one right above it, is perfectly matched at the buttons creating a seamless image as you go across the shirt. These shirt are harder to make and require greater skill and attention to detail. Many border print shirts do not match at the buttons like this one does. Engineered Hawaiian shirts: Engineered Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image from one side of the shirt to the other. The image usually repeats every 18 inches, which is greater than that of most border print shirts. The shirts also have a seamless image that is uninterrupted at the buttons. These shirts are usually the priciest shirts for any given quality of fabric because it requires the most fabric to manufacture. Engineered Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked to show off the entire design. Matched Pocket: The better Hawaiian shirts have a matched pocket. That means the pocket exactly matches the print on the shirt making it nearly invisible. In the picture to the left, you can see that the palm tree leaves on the pocket precisely line up with the leaves on the shirt. The result is a seamless image created by the pocket on the shirt.
