The Monster Sea-Based X-Band Radar Dome you may have read or heard about is at Pearl Harbor. It arrived for a paint job last week. it caused quite a stir as it came into view from around Diamond Head unannounced last Monday. I saw it last Tuesday from atop Aiea Heights and wandered down to get closer and ended up down near the Arizona Memorial Museum. It's home port is Adak, Alaska and it will keep the western skies under surveillance when it goes into operations in the Aleutians soon. From a church parking lot you can see this large dome thing is docked down at Pearl. I got down closer to the X-Band and you can see it is loaded atop the 736-foot semisubmersible ship M/V Blue Marlin. I took this shot from the launch ramp down by the Arizona Memorial Museum. The same people who wouldn't blink at spending $3.50 or more daily on a specialty coffee, can't seem to come up with a piddling donation of $25 a month to support the music that gives them so much pleasure. Even if they listen only twice a week, it comes out to a contribution of a mere $3 and change each time they listen. Now we both know that most people listen much more often than that – so it's even cheaper, especially when you consider all the hours that they listen. In any case, I'd like to contribute double my usual this month, and to thank you once again for all you do so that we, your listeners, may experience a piece, and the peace, of the islands. And having been a supporter of IRH for years continuously, I feel I have a certain right to respond to the matter in question. , Listeners are being urged to donate in order to keep IRH alive and running without you having to beg and plead each month to help out. That being said, by offering 'free' access in the beginning, until IRH had grown to an overwhelming audience of such proportions that it became evident that help was needed in the way of monthly donations. It thus became an absolute necessity in order for IRH to live on because of its own success. Consequently, listeners such as "Joel" are unfortunately just one of many of hundreds if not thousands, of cheapskates that think it is their god given right to take and not give in return just because something is there for the taking. What they don't understand is, is that it is not there for the taking, but for the enjoyment. The listening enjoyment of having a piece of Hawaii there within arms reach . A piece of Hawaii that a guy by the name of Robert Abbett provides for each and every one of us. For those of us who have been to Hawaii one time or many many times, it is a way to re-connect back to that little piece of heaven on Earth. For those who have never been there and only wish they could be, it is a way for them to be there without having to actually be there bodily but in spirit. In any event, the 'little radio station that could', from a house in Kailua Hawaii, needs all our support. If you don't believe it, turn it off and go put on your FM radio and listen to some BS music and a bunch of nonsense commercials for awhile. Maybe then you'll realize how much having Internet Radio Hawaii means to us all. Ron & Madeline Wilson Valrico, Florida Da Mokes, or more properly the Mokulua islands sit off of Lanikai beach. The island to the left is Moku Nui. To the right is Moku Iki. Both are bird conservation areas. You may land and visit the beach on Moku Nui during the day but you are not supposed to land at all on Moku Iki. Landing on and paddling out from Moku Nui can be very tricky and in fact deadly. Waves from both sides of the island wrap around the front and slap together as you make your approach. As happened on Monday 12-05-05 one can be swamped or turtled coming off the beach. I know who this person is and I have spoken with roadrunner and some other folks about it. We are currently being included as an "advertiser" via a link on the bottom of someone else's spam without my permission or previous knowledge. The following Tuesday was very hard for me. Every time I walked through the kitchen ( where Zig lived under the table) or through the big room where she hung out sprawled across the cool tile floor, I missed her terribly. My friend is no where to be seen. I'm crushed. I am so very much alone. Ziggy passed on over the rainbow at around 1 pm HST Monday afternoon at home in her bed under the careful hands and watchful eyes of her vet, an assistant and yours truly. I held her head in my hands and told her how good she was and how much I loved her, over and over. Ziggy was an angel in the body of a female white shepherd who kidnapped all our hearts and quickly became a member of our family. She was 13. Strangely enough, after glancing through her records it appeared that our first visit to the Vet was on Christmas Eve, 1990 and she was listed as being six weeks old. So although I don't remember the date because I wasn't there, she was born right around this part of the month of November. Ziggy was one of the smartest animals I have ever known. She learned tricks and how to use dog doors with ease and loved to play ball! She could catch incredible bounces and when younger would play and chase the darn thing for hours on end. She was obedient to a fault. She would come over and console us when we were down and had an amazing smile that would brighten any gray day. She was a great guard dog but did not just go outside and bark for the sake of barking. She came on command, she came with hand signals, she came to me sometimes with just a thought. Ziggy was a bit annoyed by our recent construction and hated the thumping noises most. She'd often retreat to the quiet of the bathroom in the old house but, she greeted all the carpenters every day with a wag, a sniff and a lick. I'm so glad she got to enjoy the big new room downstairs. I'm sorry she wasn't capable of making it up the 14 steps to the new studio. She would have dug it. I swear, she liked Hawaiian music. I left a radio on all the time in the new bathroom downstairs and I caught her groovin' on more than one occassion. You could tell. It was that special look on her face. Sheer bliss. She really liked Gabby and would react with recognition whenever she heard me rattling on about something or doing a promo. Ziggy went over the rainbow with dignity and class and a full belly of her favorite rawhide treats, a freshly brushed coat of gleaming white fur and a flood of love from a several hour petting and hangin' out session we enjoyed Monday. We also played drop catch with the ball and she never missed, even through pretty heavy cataracts. Dr. Caspar, who she greeted by jumpin' up and wobblin' over to and then licking excitedly, said she also apparently was beginning to suffer liver malfunction as her belly was filled with liquid. That made me feel better about my decision and bad too because maybe I should have done something last week. It was, without a doubt, the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. I agonized over it for the past couple months but finally, Monday with her condition deteriorating rapidly, I decided to call in the Vet. I did this for my dearest and very very best friend who was having real problems with advanced arthritis in her back legs and was hardly able to get around anymore. We exhausted all the heroics - pain pills, pain receptor inhibitors, powder and liquid glucosamines, steroids and prayers. Ziggy resting in the garage early Monday by her Big Water. My Mom and I talked Monday - (she is the dog queen and has a couple grand champions to her credit!) and she mentioned that there is a point where the human tends to go too far to keep the dog around. I didn't want to do that to her and as it turned out what with the liver disfunction and all I guess our timing was bless-ed. We love You Ziggy! We always will. We hope to play with you again one day on the other side of the rainbow.

At home we all know the nice restaurants for that special dinner, the local places for good Chinese or Italian food, and even the hole-in-the-walls which we like to think only we know about. When we come to Hawaii we are clueless. We may read Frommer’s or Fodor's and get an idea of what's available, or buy a good book like Robert and Cindy Carpenter's Hawaii Restaurant Guide. More often we tend to eat at our hotel or someplace nearby that "seems" good or even look for the nearest Denny's or McDonalds. Too often we find ourselves spending good money for food that's simply ok or worse. I'll always remember that the worst Chinese food my wife and I ever had was in San Francisco's Chinatown. We had no idea where to eat, so we just picked a place at random. The food was terrible! Matthew Gray understood this problem very well. As an accomplished chef and food critic for the Honolulu Advertiser, Gray had eaten in almost every restaurant on Oahu. He knew that there were really good places to eat, but that there were also quite a few pretty bad places also. After over ten years of experiencing the good and bad of Hawaii's restaurants, Matthew and his partner Keira Nagai, who also had worked for years in the food industry, decided to start their own business to share their knowledge of Oahu's restaurants with those of us who know far too little. The City Council gave his family-controlled Irving I. Moskowitz Foundation a monopoly on charitable bingo, which persists to this day, even though Moskowitz never lived up to his promise to donate most of the proceeds locally. He simply recalled or ran candidates against City Council members who challenged his monopoly and continued to run the taxpayer-subsidized bingo as a private piggy bank. more... But Moskowitzs track record of less-than-charitable activity in Hawaiian Gardens belies his self-image of an altruistic benefactor a careful examination of his financial records and those of his non-profit foundation show that the majority of his contributions resulted in either financial gain or increased political influence for himself. What follows is an excerpt from a forthcoming Coalition for Justice white paper explaining how Irving Moskowitz has used his Irving I. Moskowitz Foundation and other ostensibly non-profit organizations to his own benefit in Hawaiian Gardens. We have carefully sifted through foundation IRS forms, court and property records, lease agreements, the California state business registry as well as conducting numerous interviews with community leaders in our effort to follow a money trail proving Moskowitz has engaged in non-profit profiteering in Hawaiian Gardens. Update: Since posting this report on our website, more information has come to light that strongly suggests that Moskowitz's non-profit Tri-City Regional Medical Center is in violation of Internal Revenue Service rules qualifying health care providers for tax-exemption. (Click here to read more) Moskowitz's "charity" bingo Over the years, the bingo club has netted tens of millions of dollars and Moskowitz has funneled the bulk of the money to extremist Israeli causes [see Blocking Mideast Peace ] By contrast, Moskowitz's use of bingo funds in Hawaiian Gardens has been strategically stingy. Moskowitz gave multi-million dollar donations from the bingo to organizations in Hawaiian Gardens - they just happened to go mainly to the hospital Moskowitz owns and the food bank he and his family control. Moskowitz's bingo operation has in the past supported the Hawaiian Gardens government. But that was from 1995 to 1997, while he campaigned for approval of his casino. In 1999 his total giving to the city was $35,000! The bingo operation takes advantage of a state law that requires that bingo parlors must be charities, staffed by volunteers. The Moskowitz Foundation staffs the bingo with immigrant "volunteers" who work set schedules only for tips – no wages or benefits. MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, is suing the Moskowitz bingo on behalf of 24 unpaid bingo workers. [see MALDEF Suit ] Irving Moskowitz used his bingo to hijack Hawaiian Gardens' political life and its development funds If he gets a long-pending casino license, he will continue to snatch this community’s future. In the mid-1990s, Irving Moskowitz used his "charity" bingo to gain political control of Hawaiian Garden, a predominantly Latino, low-income city. He then put the City millions of dollars in debt to build his casino. California's gambling authority is in the process of deciding whether to license Moskowitz's casino. We believe Moskowitz should not get the license, because it would mean the government endorses his abuse of Hawaiian Gardens. Based on the business practices Moskowitz’s has employed in running his bingo parlors, we are certain that if he gets a license, Moskowitz will not pay the casino taxes to Hawaiian Gardens, and instead will leave residents to pay off the casino’s debts! [see DDA ] Moskowitz's Hawaiian Gardens Casino In 1993, Moskowitz pushed through a sweetheart deal with the Hawaiian Gardens Community Redevelopment Agency to develop what, at the time, everyone thought would be a large retail complex. But by 1995, Moskowitz was backing a ballot measure on a casino—spending over $500,000, almost $200 a vote, much of it to street gang "campaign workers." Hawaiian Gardens took a financial beating from the development of the casino. The 1993 deal stuck left the city's Redevelopment Agency paying many costs commonly born by developers. The financial burden so drained the Agency that its auditors warned it might go belly up. The City Council bailed out the Agency with more than $3 million. Then, with the casino still unfinished, the city borrowed $3.5 million from Dr. Moskowitz to finance additional Agency spending on the casino. The city then floated bonds to pay the debts that Moskowitz forced it to incur – including a million-dollar bill from his lawyers. The bonds are secured by the very casino revenue taxes which once promised prosperity – and which [see DDA ] we believe Moskowitz will probably stop paying if the state gives him a gambling license. But while most bingos raise less than $100,000 a year for local churches and schools, Hawaiian Gardens is neither small nor local. Besides the palm trees, little here suggests Hawaii,” begins the report, which focuses on the massive, purportedly charitable Hawaiian Gardens bingo operated by "the reclusive and wealthy doctor, Irving I. Moskowitz," and the poor, predominantly Latino city, where Moskowitz also has a for-profit casino. Controversy in a Small, Casino Town by Douglas P. Shuit 25 March 1999 Los Angeles Times "The physician considered by some to be the city of Hawaiian Gardens' absentee landlord is stirring the pot again. This time, Irving Moskowitz -- who controls legal gambling in Hawaiian Gardens and keeps the city alive by funneling millions of dollars in gifts through a charitable foundation -- is said to be the force behind the abrupt resignation of City Atty. Julia Sylva. And the city attorney is not going quietly." Hawaiian Gardens Card Club Faces Legal Wrangle by Joe Segura 24 March 1999 Long Beach Press-Telegram This story reports that Hawaiian Gardens' assembly member called for a review of Hawaiian Gardens card-club development plan. It also reports that city attorney Julia Sylva, a Moskowitz opponent, resigned after a new solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office. "HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, said Wednesday he wants to review Hawaiian Gardens' card-club development plan to determine whether state law restrictions on public-fund use is being ignored. The city's Redevelopment Agency has been involved with Irving Moskowitz for the past few years in an effort to build a multimillion dollar card club - and the city's tab has reached about the halfway mark of a potential $20 million bill, according to former City Attorney Julia Sylva." Meanwhile, as a new, solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office, Julia Sylva, the Hawaiian Gardens city attorney long at odds with Moskowitz' attorney and local potentate Beryl Weiner, resigned.
