Windsurfing Schools on Maui Maui's Windsurfing Schools Get a Clew! Windsurfing lessons are fun! Honing your windsurfing skills is fun and invigorating if you've got the right conditions. I mean, why freeze yer butt off and thrash around in polluted waters when you can fall in hundreds of times in the cushy waters of paradise. Maui's warm water, and consistent winds make for the most user friendly sailing on the planet. These days, windsurfing instructors are finely tuned in the art of getting you where you want to be. (sailing along with the wind) All the schools here have competent, expert instructors who have seen it all. (you wont be embarrassed by anyone, just helped) You'll probably have a limited time on Maui, so lessons are the smart money for taking advantage of the sailing days you have here. These answers to a questionnaire I sent out are good jumping off points for looking into the schools further. These Maui Windsurfing schools are listed in the order that they submitted their responses to me. I gave them one chance to submit their information. These responses are their own words. The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why. These delicate shells come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and even a rare blue. Whole families are involved in collecting the shells and carefully sorting them by size and color. The intricate craftsmanship that goes into a Niihau Shell Lei makes each one a prized possession. Island Flavor Lindsey Cassiday and Ralen Chang have lived in Hawaii their whole lives. It's where they met and where their relationship blossomed—so it's no surprise that their wedding was a celebration of the islands' distinctive culture. The intimate, outdoor ceremony, at the home of Lindsey's parents in Diamond Head, Oahu, was performed in both English and Hawaiian by a friend, Ka'au, who acted as kahu (priest). The aisle was strewn with yellow and white plumeria, a local flower, and as a special addition to the ceremony, the couple honored their parents by presenting them with maile-leaf and ginger leis. Barefoot and Wedded The bride and groom recited their vows facing the ocean, surrounded by their wedding party. The bridesmaids wore simple sleeveless white tops with pale-blue skirts and pikake choker leis, similar to the choker Lindsey wore. The groomsmen were dressed in Hawaiian-print shirts in gray and pale blue; they wore green maile-leaf leis like Ralen around their necks. The only thing missing? Shoes—all of them were barefoot. Hula Hunks In the clear-topped reception tent, with views of the South Pacific sky, Lindsey and Ralen took their first spin on the dance floor to "Hawaiian Rainbow," by the Ho'opi'i Brothers. "We chose that song because it's all about the islands and their flowers," says Lindsey. Her favorite moment was when the wedding coordinator surprised everyone by leading the groom and groomsmen in the hukilau , a special hula. It's a Hawaiian tradition for the bride to do a hula for her groom on the wedding night, but at this wedding, the roles were reversed. "The hula was hilarious because Ralen and his groomsmen were in matching outfits," says Lindsey. "Everyone was laughing and cheering."
