Its all on Oahu, "The Gathering Place." Oahu is the third largest island in the Hawaiian chain, encompassing 597 square miles. This is, by far, Hawaiis most populous island, with more than 875,000 people (75 percent) of the states total population calling Oahu home. For most visitors, Waikiki , with its world-famous beach and stunning Diamond Head Crater , is the center of the action. Within its 1.5-square-mile boundaries is the glittering playground of the Pacific, where more than three-fourths of Hawaiis seven million annual visitors come to relax and frolic. Although it has its share of tourist traps, Waikiki also has an expansive park, a popular hike, fabulous restaurants and nightlife, and even a large zoo and aquarium. Still, many kamaaina (natives) will tell you that your Oahu adventure really begins once you venture outside Waikiki. Honolulu ("sheltered bay"), Hawaiis capital and largest city, is where youll find the states principal port, major airport, and business and financial center. From herbal remedies in Chinatown and historical artifacts at the Bishop Museum to paying homage to our war heroes at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial , there is much to do and see in Honolulu . For a taste of Oahu at its rugged best, head to the North Shore , a 20-mile stretch of coastline from Kaena Point to Turtle Bay. Stroll through the funky town of Haleiwa and its colorful assortment of surf shops, boutiques, art galleries and eateries. A favorite stop here is Matsumotos Shave Ice, a venerable landmark that serves the icy treat in a glorious rainbow of flavors. Each winter, the North Shore becomes the center of the surfing universe, with up to 25-foot waves challenging the sports best and bravest. Heading east, pristine Hanauma Bay remains one of the states most popular and widely photographed attractions. And just minutes away are other perennial favorites such as Sandy Beach , the Blow Hole and Sea Life Park . Weve just scratched the surface here. Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Elevation: 1,476 feet (450 m) - Kahoolawe 10,023 feet (3,055 m) - Maui The Island of Maui is made of two volcanoes: West Maui and East Maui.Most of the West Maui shield (20.9N, 156.6W) formed between 2-1.3 millionyears ago. A central caldera has been identified roughly in the area ofthe present-day Iao Valley. Alkalic basalts capped the volcano about 1.2million years ago. Four small eruptions occurred during the rejuvenatedstage on West Maui, probably about 1 million years ago. The volcano isdeeply dissected by numerous valleys. West Maui has not erupted inhistoric time and is considered to be extinct . East Maui Volcano, often also (but incorrectly) called Haleakala, is the easternmost of the twoshield volcanoes that make the Island of Maui. East Maui Volcano (20.7N, 156.2W)is the third largest Hawaiian shield volcano. Three rift zones can beclearly seen in the above Space Shuttle photograph(compare with map below). Most of thevolcanic activity has been concentrated along the southwest and east riftzones. The impressive Haleakala Crater is at the summit of the volcano.Haleakala Crater is an erosional caldera, formed by the coalescence ofthe heads of two large valleys as they eroded into the volcano. The mainshield of Haleakala is more than 800,000 years old. Lava flows andpyroclastics of the capping stage range in age from 930,000 to 350,000years old. Rejuvenated-stage volcanic rocks occur along the rift zonesand in the crater. The most recent eruption of Haleakala was in about1790 at La Perouse Bay. Haleakala is considered an active volcanobecause this eruption is in historic time for Hawaii. Kahoolawe (20.5N, 156.6W) is one of the smallest shield volcanoes in theHawaiian Islands. Kahoolawe is the island near the bottom of the slide.The lava flows that make the main shield are 1-2 million years old. Waveerosion has exposed a caldera on the eastside of the island . Running on algae Former SOEST Dean Barry Raleigh , currently a researcher with the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute , is studying the use of algae as a source of fuel.
