The group is concerned with all non-native invasive species threatening agriculture, watersheds, native ecosystems, tourism, industry, human health, or the quality of life on Oahu. Pest Alert Flyers Miconia (241 kb) Miconia calvescens is Oahu's number one invasive threat. Manuka (306 kb) Also called New Zealand tea tree, this bush is creeping into Oahu's valleys. Himalayan Blackberry (220 kb) Have you tried walking though a Himalayan blackberry thicket? Fountain Grass (238 kb) Fountain grass is fueling fires across Hawaii. Bush Beardgrass (297 kb) This invasive bunchgrass is only found in two areas on Oahu. There is still a chance of removing it! Indian Rhododendron (275 kb) This beautiful plant is on the Hawaii noxious weed list and is a close relative of the dreaded Miconia. Smoke Bush (238 kb) Also known as butterfly bush, this ornamental plant has escaped the garden. Built in 1899 on Reed's Island, on the lush green side of Hawai`i Island, it is one of the state's few remaining Victorian mansions. Hilo's most photographed residence, the recently renovated "castle" sits high on a ridge overlooking a deep gulch lined with magnificent stands of palms, bamboo and ferns. Much of the original furniture remains in the house, which included a double parlor, library, dining room, conservatory, billiard room, and a second floor ballroom (now guestrooms). In the afternoon, guests may enjoy cold lemonade on the lanai overlooking Hilo Bay, just as the Shipman family did. The library is also available, as is the 1912 Steinway concert grand piano. The porte-cochere's high step accommodated turn-of-the-century horse-and-carriage passengers. Shipman House is the perfect inn for guests who love the history, gardens and comfortable living of Old Hawai`i. As Hilo's best accommodation, Shipman House offers the gracious, unpretentious hospitality of a fifth generation Island family in a home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home offers 5 Bedrooms, each with private bath. Shipman House is open all year. The Grounds Explore the grounds, see the waterfall. The Shipmans were avid plant collectors, and the 5.5-acre grounds are planted with a wide variety of palms, ferns, and other tropicals, including the Shipman Pink anthurium. Willie and Mary's youngest son, Herbert C. Shipman, brought the first orchid plants to the Island of Hawaii, now nicknamed the Orchid Isle. He also saved the nene [pronounced nay-nay], the Hawaiian goose, from extinction. Today there are over 20 varieties of fruit trees on the property, numerous varieties of bananas, pineapples, taro, and even a small coffee plantation. Fruits in season appear on the breakfast buffet, and exotic flowers from the garden grace the house and guest rooms. History In 1901, W.H. ("Willie") Shipman bought the mansion as a surprise for his beloved wife, Mary Kahiwaaiali`i Johnson Shipman, who wanted it so badly she could hardly stand it. He did not tell her about it for a month. He paid $13,000. The seller made a profit. Mary's grandmother was a Hawaiian of high rank, and her grandfather was one of the first white men to stay in Hawai`i. Willie, a cattle rancher, had missionary parents. Mary, known for her gracious hospitality, counted among her guests her friend, Hawai`i's last queen, Lili`uokalani, and author Jack London, who stayed for a month with his wife Charmian. As quoted by his wife, Jack London said, "To me, Mother Shipman is the First Lady of Hawaii." Liliuokalani would enjoy a poi luncheon here, then play the Steinway concert grand piano as she enjoyed a cigar. Your Hosts In 1993, the Shipmans' great-granddaughter and her husband, Barbara Ann and Gary Andersen, returned to Hilo to purchase and renovate the family home. They continue the tradition of old Hawaiian hospitality as they open their historic home and guesthouse to bed and breakfast guests. Let your host share memories and family anecdotes with you during the Grand Tour of the mansion and the gardens. Barbara and her sister spent a part of every summer with their great-aunts at the house, weeding the cutting garden, riding wheelbarrows down rolling green lawns, arranging flowers, making plum jam, bathing in claw-foot tubs, and sleeping in four-poster beds. Barbara and Gary say they love this side of the island, and enthusiastically share its beauty, history, special nooks and crannies with any and all newcomers. This part of Hawai`i is so often overlooked by travelers and travel agents, yet it has an "old Hawai`i" charm which most visitors really enjoy. The Bedrooms All five guest bedrooms are large, with 10 to 12 ft. ceilings, private baths, small refrigerators, cotton kimonos, heirloom furnishings, hand-woven lauhala mats, fans and fresh flowers. The Main House offers Three Rooms: ~ Flossie's Willow Bough: On the first floor, adjoining the library, with antique koa twin beds, ceiling fan, and private bath with shower/tub. It opens onto the wraparound veranda through an unusual window-door and tall shutters. Originally a billiard room, this is the room Charmian and Jack London stayed in. $154/night ~ Auntie Clara's Shell Room: Upstairs, with parts of her shell collection, koa furniture, and a queen-size bed. Spectacular view of Hilo Bay. Its large private bath, adjacent in the hall, with claw foot tub and separate shower, was the only bathroom in the original house. It is not shared with anyone. Hear Waikapu ("forbidden spring") Stream running through the gulch below. $184/night ~ Auntie Carrie's Room: Upstairs, one-third of the original ballroom, it overlooks the expansive side/backyard. It adjoins the upstairs porch, and has a private bath (shower/tub) en suite, small sitting area and antique koa queen-size bed with feather mattress. $164/night ~ Cottage Mauka and Cottage Makai are the two (separate) spacious bedrooms upstairs in the 1910 guesthouse, across the driveway. They have queen-size beds, window seats and private baths (shower/tubs). Private entrances and ceiling fans. No kitchens. The headboards in these rooms are from the bed Jack London slept on when he stayed for a month in 1907. A broad, shared, screened lanai and an interior door separate/connect the two bedrooms. Surrounded by trees, lawn, and birds. $164/night per room. Breakfast A glorious celebration of Island foods not usually available to visitors, is served outside on the lanai. A typical continental buffet may have macadamia nut granola, assorted local fruits in season (there are 20 varieties of fruit trees on the property), fruit juices, Kona coffee, special breads or muffins. When available, we may add baked bananas, hashed brown taro, or breadfruit. BREAKFAST HOURS 7:45-9:00 a.m., (or earlier with notice). Different Styles of Hawaiian Shirts Different Types of Hawaiian Shirts There are different types of Hawaiian shirts based on the style or layout of the design. The most common ones are the basic all-over print and the scenic print. But there are variations within these types well as several other styles. We'll also cover some of the terminology used for Hawaiian shirts. All of our shirts are made in Hawaii with great care and with special attention to the details like matched pockets. Basic All-Over Print Hawaiian shirts: These shirts are probably the most common shirts. They are characterized by a repeating print that appears all over the fabric in a uniform manner as illustrated to the left. These shirts can be worn tucked in our out. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Scenic Print Hawaiian shirts: The scenic shirts are similar to the all-over print shirts in that the details in the print repeat in a uniform matter. The only difference is that these shirts contain scenery rather than just a simple repeating image of a flower or leaf. For some people, the scenic prints conjure up feelings of freedom and being on vacation. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Panel Hawaiian shirts: Some shirts have prints that are laid out in vertical panels, usually flowers and/or leaves. Like the basic all-over prints and the scenic prints, the panel designs have repeating patterns, but they repeat as you go from one side of the shirt to the other, rather than all over the shirt. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Border Hawaiian shirts: Shirts that have a design going across the shirt are called border Hawaiian shirts. Most of these shirts have a design in them that repeat every 10-12 inches as you go from one side of the shirt to the other. If the design happens to go across the bottom of the shirt, they may be called a Bottom Design Hawaiian shirt . The shirt illustrated at left is a border shirt that also happens to be a bottom print. Border Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked. Matched Prints: Some border or bottom print Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image at the buttons. The shirt to the left, unlike the one right above it, is perfectly matched at the buttons creating a seamless image as you go across the shirt. These shirt are harder to make and require greater skill and attention to detail. Many border print shirts do not match at the buttons like this one does. Engineered Hawaiian shirts: Engineered Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image from one side of the shirt to the other. The image usually repeats every 18 inches, which is greater than that of most border print shirts. The shirts also have a seamless image that is uninterrupted at the buttons. These shirts are usually the priciest shirts for any given quality of fabric because it requires the most fabric to manufacture. Engineered Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked to show off the entire design. Matched Pocket: The better Hawaiian shirts have a matched pocket. That means the pocket exactly matches the print on the shirt making it nearly invisible. In the picture to the left, you can see that the palm tree leaves on the pocket precisely line up with the leaves on the shirt. The result is a seamless image created by the pocket on the shirt. Different Kinds of Gifts `âlana Offering, especially a free-will offering. `âlana aloha Peace offering, offering of love. `âlana kuni Burnt offering, offering to procure death by sorcery. ha`awina Grant, contribution, honorarium, donation. ho`ina A farewell gift, especially as a parting gift after a feast. ho`okupu A ceremonial gift given as a sign of honor or respect, often to a chief or deity; church offering. louulu A betrothal gift sent from one family to another. makana Gift, present; reward, award, prize. Makana ka ho`i (What a gift!), sometimes said sarcastically, by an ungrateful person. makana aloha Gift of friendship or love; freewill offering. makana hele Parting gift. Lit., going gift. `oloa A gift to a newborn child. pâlala / palaloa A gift or tax given to a chief at the birth of a child; to honor a child with a gift; house-warming feast. pani Final gift in a ho`okupu (gift-giving as a sign of honor and respect) ceremony. wainohia A gift of affection. Nâ Makana Makamae ~ Treasured Gifts hulu Feather, quill, plumage. Objects made of feathers were the most valuable, aesthetically and materially, and were exchanged among ali`i (royalty) and as gifts to warriors with prowess. niho palaoa Carved whale tooth. Rare, highly prized, worn by high chiefs. Take a look at Uncle Charlie's lei palaoa. kâhili Royal feather standards. Other gifts include canoes, adzes, bowls, pieces of kapa , and fishhooks. Valued intrinsic gifts include feelings of kôkua (helpfulness), lokomaika`i (kindliness), and aloha . Gift-giving with Aloha hâ`awi lokomaika`i To give freely, openhanded. hâ`awi wale To give freely, gratis. ho`onu`a Give lavishly, generously, continuously. kahiau To give generously or lavishly with the heart and without expectation of return. kihikau To give lavishly. manuahi Gratis, free of charge. pâna`i Reciprocate, whether good or bad; to pay back, reward, or revenge. Repay each gift with something at least equivalent to what is received; giving more is better. pu`upâ To give and receive freely. hâ`awi manawale`a / manawale`a Give gladly. Pseudo-Gift-giving / Poor Etiquette "Genuine (gift-giving) can only take place when no exchange of money is involved, or more precisely, when something is given without any thought of getting something back except the pleasure of giving and purest aloha." ~ George Hu`eu Kanahele hâ`awi papa he`e nalu Give for the sake of receiving a gift; trade, buy and sell. helu Counting. Refers to the graceless, offensive behavior of recalling past favors to get something back. The person so offended often returned the gift. kû`ai Trade. To return a gift immediately savored of trade, and cheapened the gift. When one had been given a gift in a bowl or dish, the container was kept for a few days before returned, filled with something. ku`aku`ai Give for the sake of receiving a gift; trade, buy and sell. maua Failure to return a gift. Mahalo Mahalo "Thank you", gratitude, appreciation. There is no precise equivalent of thank you in Hawaiian. As with Native Americans and other Polynesians, saying thank you upon receiving a gift was considered unnecessary and offensive. The unspoken grace and humility in receiving the gift "spoke" volumes. To give proper thanks for a gift, give a gift back, preferably of greater value. Each new exchange lends value, prestige and mana to all concerned, creating a positive spiraling effect generated by generosity and hospitality. Mahalo nui loa. Mahalo â nui.
