Hawaiian Quilting Journey: Week

Mokihana’s Garden » Blog Archive » Mokihana’s Hawaiian Quilting Journey: Week Two Mokihana’s Garden A Mānoa Valley Wahine Writes of Past and Present « Mokihana’s Hawaiian Quilting Journey: Week One Mokihana’s Hawaiian Quilting Journey: Class! » Mokihana’s Hawaiian Quilting Journey: Week Two I thought I’d come out the winner this week. And I did, sorta. Eventually. I got my new fabric all washed and ready and started cutting. Unfortunately, I musta been half asleep at the time, because I cut it wrong and had to go back to the fabric store yet again! Sheesh! Fabric 6, Mokihana O. However, the next day I was much more successful, and got my applique piece all properly cut out - Mokihana 1, Fabric 6. The following day I cut out my background piece - Mokihana 2, Fabric 6 (I’m catching up!). I carefully unfolded my green ulu applique piece and voila! There it was, waiting for me to baste it onto the background fabric. I think I should get a point for that. K’den. Mokihana 3 - Fabric 6. Then, the next day of quiet basting with my friend, I got the whole pattern basted onto the background! Pau! Mokihana 4, Fabric 6. Now I am ready to start appliqueing the pattern to the background. And I fully expect to have my score keep climbing! This is turning out to be a very rewarding project for me. I feel very spiritually connected to it, feeling a real connection to Hawaiian women years and years before me designing and quilting their own works of art. I couldn’t make it out to The Gathering this week. I was buried with work and a very large truck with a cherry picker and shredder attached to it was parked in my long, narrow driveway while a crew from Portland General Electric trimmed branches from the firs, maples, alders and willows away from the power lines. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t get out; it would have been a lovely day. However, there is next week. And I have a quilt square ready to be appliqued. The colors are just what I wanted and I feel so good about starting this. It is a song to me, and I am loving the singing of it. Sep 05 '03 Author's Product Rating Food and Presentation: Ambiance and Decor: Quality of Service: Pros Tasty. Low cost. High value. Clean. Cons Parking. Only one in LA. The Bottom Line Terrific alternative to burgers and pizzas, the BBQ meat is healthier because it is less oily, too! Full Review Tired of burgers, pizzas and Gyros? Find Yoshinoya annoying? Eating at the Ono Then it’s time for ONO’s HAWAIIAN BBQ! Located in a ubiquitous two storey strip mall on the corner of Santa Monica and Bundy on the boundary between West LA and Santa Monica, this year old fast food is quickly becoming a magnet food outlet drawing both the multitude of students, professionals, and families who live nearby. My family drives from Pasadena (20 miles east) to get out BBQ from here. While chatting with some of the other patrons, I found a couple who drove from Long Beach (15 miles south) to get the food. Ono is Hawaiian for delicious. And that only starts to describe this wonderful food. This is a fast food restaurant, so the walk up counter and food ordering procedure is exactly the same as a KFC or Carl’s Jr. The menu is displayed on a neon lit board behind the cashier. The kitchen can be seen through the opening where the food passes. What’s to Eat? The food choices are simple: BBQ or rice bowls. But it is in the combination of the BBQ’s and rice dishes that this restaurant really amazes. The restaurant specializes in “plate lunches”. This is a classic Hawaiian meal made up of Asian and Island dishes, including Kalbi short ribs (Korean), Mahi Mahi (Hawaiian fish), BBQ Chicken (Chinese style), Chicken Katsu (deep fried breaded Japanese style chicken), accompanied by macaroni salad and steamed rice. The restaurant’s menu proclaims this to be “the de facto meal of choice in Hawaii and the best representation of the blend of cuisine and multi-cultures found in Hawaii. The meal takes a little while to get there because the meat is barbequed after you order, so everything is freshly cooked and not reheated in a microwave. But is it worth the wait! The Kalbi short ribs still had that smoky carmelization on the bones. At the time of this writing, this combination costs $6.69. And the portions are huge. The lunch plate fed me and my six year old and two year old, and had enough left over to share with my wife, who had ordered a more modest dish of Maui Pineapple Chicken. We’ve never made it to Hawaii, but if this is what they eat there every day, it’s no wonder that the Hawaiians dominate the Japanese Sumo championships. There are other dishes, including a curry chicken over rice, Salmon, Hamburgers, Caesar salad, Seafood Noodle Soup, the ever present Teriyaki Chicken bowl, and an appetizer intriguingly called Spam Musubi. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even con my one year old daughter into trying THAT one. “C’mon honey, it’s made with your favorite: pork!” She just turned away and started running for her mother. So I will have to update you on this one after I’ve starved myself enough to want to try it. The Restaurant and the Service The restaurant has a nice high ceiling, cafeteria seating, and is well lighted, and not that full. It is very clean. Most of the people sitting around were waiting for their take out. We took about 20 minutes to eat, but there must have been at least 20 take away orders during that same period. The Korean counter girls were nice enough and even substituted the rice for macaroni (for my kids), but they definitely looked over worked. They are one of the few Asian fast food places that take credit cards. And the county health inspection report is a proudly displayed “A”. What’s Not to Like Well, the parking can be difficult. The forecourt of the strip mall features only 10 minute surface parking and the narrowest and smallest basement parking ramp in LA. Not recommended if you are driving anything larger than a Chrysler Neon. It would also be nice if they had a few more of these around the city, perhaps with a drive through window. You know, for those of us who are too Hawaiian to get out of our cars. Recommended Yes Kid Friendliness: Yes Vegetarian Friendly: No Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Get the Lunch Plates: 3 BBQ meats with sides of macaroni and rice. Try the Salmon. Hawaiian Airlines : History of Hawaiian Airlines Help/FAQ Sitemap History See a Timeline About Us Customer Service Commitment Investor Relations News Releases Corporate Info & Fact Sheet History Contact Us Privacy Policy Business Ethics and Conduct Help/Frequently Asked Questions Hawaii's largest airline since its founding in 1929, Hawaiian Airlines today serves 18 domestic and international destinations in the Pacific region. It specializes in air transportation among the Hawaiian Islands and bringing visitors to Hawaii from points in the Western U.S. and the South Pacific. Carrying more than 6 million passengers a year, Hawaiian Airlines provides high-frequency jet service daily to seven destinations throughout the Hawaiian Islands and weekly service to the South Pacific destinations of Tahiti and American Samoa. In North America it provides daily service to Hawaii from more cities than any other airline. A pioneer of Pacific aviation , Hawaiian Airlines was incorporated on January 30, 1929 under the name Inter-Island Airways Ltd. On November 11 that same year, thousands gathered at Honolulu's John Rodgers Airport to witness the departure of Hawaii's first scheduled interisland flights: Inter-Island's inaugural flights to Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Two eight-passenger Sikorsky S-38 amphibian planes thus began three weekly round trips between these destinations. The airline continued to modernize its fleet as aviation technology advanced. In 1935 larger, 16-passenger Sikorsky S-43s were added to accommodate increased traffic and newly authorized interisland airmail service. In 1941 Inter-Island changed its name to Hawaiian Airlines and introduced the 24-passenger DC-3 into Hawaiian skies. This "workhorse" of the piston era was the mainstay of the airline's fleet for many years. It became vital during wartime operations when all interisland traffic was placed under military control. Granted the very first air cargo certificate issued by the Civil Aeronautics Board, Hawaiian Airlines provided an aerial lifeline to Hawaii's Neighbor Islands during World War II. The advent of commercial jet service in the 1960s resulted in increased air traffic to and from Hawaii. Hawaiian grew to accommodate the travel needs of a growing residential population as well as an expanding visitor industry. In 1966 the airline brought to Hawaii its first pure jet interisland aircraft, the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. Travel time between the islands was reduced to a mere 20 to 30 minutes. The DC-9 remains the backbone of Hawaiian's mixed interisland fleet, Hawaii's best answer to the travel needs of residents and visitors alike. In 1984 Hawaiian began to provide worldwide charter services with three long-range DC-8 jets. Soon after, scheduled service began to Pago Pago, American Samoa and Nuku'alofa, Tonga. A year later Hawaiian acquired five Lockheed L-1011 widebody aircraft for scheduled and charter service. June 12, 1985 marked the inauguration of Hawaiian Airlines' scheduled widebody jet service between the West Coast and Hawaii with daily flights to Los Angeles. Daily flights between Hawaii and San Francisco and Seattle started in January, 1986. Service to Western Samoa soon followed. In 1987 Hawaiian expanded its South Pacific service by inaugurating flights to Tahiti, and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. South Pacific service was scaled back in 1993 with the retirement of DC-8 aircraft used on these routes. In 1990 the international travel and hospitality publication Cond Nast Traveler rated Hawaiian Airlines one of the world's safest airlines. In an exclusive 20 year study (August 1990 issue), Cond Nast noted that Hawaiian was one of only five U.S. carriers, along with four with relatively short histories, that had never had an airfatality in their entire histories. Thirteen years later, Hawaiian's record of safety continues unbroken. In late 1993 Hawaiian Airlines entered into a series of marketing and services agreements with American Airlines' parent AMR Corporation. Consequently, Hawaiian in 1994 converted its reservations and operating computer system to American's SABRE system, became a participating carrier in American's AAdvantage Travel Awards program and replaced its entire widebody fleet of Lockheed L-1011 aircraft with DC-10 aircraft provided and maintained by American. In 2001 , Hawaiian began a comprehensive fleet modernization program with the delivery of 13 new Boeing 717-200 aircraft that would completely replace its DC-9 fleet that year. In 2002 and 2003, the company completed the program with the complete replacement of its widebody DC-10 fleet with 14 Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Hawaiian Airlines' fleet is now among the youngest in the industry. Hawaiian has consistently been rated one of the "10 Best" U.S. airlines by readers of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure for the past several years, has been the top U.S. airline for "Premium" class service by the Zagat Survey and most recently was rated fourth best domestic carrier in Travel + Leisure's 'Worlds's Best Awards.' In addition to a consistently high rating by discriminating travelers, Hawaiian's service has won several international honors. "Hawaiian Skies," the company's onboard video program highlighting the people and culture of Hawaii, earned a Bronze World Medal at the 42nd Annual New York International Film and Video Festival in 2000 as well as the Avion Award for excellence from the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) in 1999. In 1998, Inside Flyer magazine rated HawaiianMiles, the company's frequent flyer program, one of the best in the world. In 1997, the International Inflight Food Service (IFSA) awarded Hawaiian its highest honor, the President's Award, for the company's Coach class service between the West Coast and Hawaii. The company had already won the coveted OnBoard Services Award for innovation and excellence in First Class service on West Coast-Hawaii flights. Hawaiian continues to build on an unbroken 74-year record of safety and to date has transported more than 130 million passengers. Hawaiian is the only airline able to provide single-carrier service from the Western U.S. and the South Pacific to each of Hawaii's islands. On board, passengers are surrounded with the gracious warmth unique to the people and culture of the Islands. Visitors to Hawaii are able to begin their vacation the moment they step on board a Hawaiian Airlines aircraft. The 12-track collection presents a wide variety of island tunes by some of Hawaii's best-known artists. Island friends, the Cruz `Ohana, are well represented. Ernie, John & Desiree Cruz (in her "premier performance") each favor us with a tune. Also included are selections by The Mana'o Company, Bryan Kessler, Randy Lorenzo, Lorna Lim, Pomai (another "new" solo performance), Alan Thomas, RJ Kaneao, Robi Kahakalau and the very talented composer and musician, Charles Brotman. ISLAND STYLE contains a well-balanced mix of island talent and songs. The overall outlook for this release is bright and sunny. This will be one of Palm Records biggest sellers. Island Style , and all Palm Records releases, featuring such talents as KOHALA, are in daily rotation on our Aloha Radio Network. All of their albums are well conceived and attractively presented by Art Director, Jody Brotman. Visit their website to see their entire on-line catalog. www.palmrecords.com Aloha JOE SLACK KEY GUITAR Volume 2 - Palm Records A compilation of ten island artists The slack key guitar's roots can be traced back to the early days of the Hawaiian Cowboys. (the Paniolo). In the past ten years, this musical form has moved from the "backyard" to concert halls around the world. The slack key guitar is a solo instrument played with the virtuosity of any concert performance. There are many "slack key festivals" in Hawaii that showcase a variety of artists during one program, but concert promoters around the world can't afford to present ten island performers on one show. That's where SLACK KEY GUITAR V2 from Palm Records comes in handy. It's like having front-row seats at an island Slack Key Festival. Fans of slack key turn to the many instructional books and videos which teach the concept of tuning the guitar and explain the basics of playing, but to really learn, you need to listen to a wide variety of styles. Producer Charles Brotman corralled ten of Hawaii's slack key artisans to present a cross section of musical styles. These range from traditional to more contemporary treatments. Sonny Lim, Ken Emerson, Keoki Kahumoku and Charles Brotman do a pair of tunes each and Bryan Kessler, Randy Lorenzo, Jeff Peterson, Charlie Recaido, John Cruz and John Keawe each favor us with a selection. I'm glad Big Island company, Palm Records, decided that the world NEEDS another album of guitar music because Slack Key Guitar Volume 2 is a perfect learning tool and a wonderful addition to your Slack Key collection. Remember, you can listen and pretend you're attending a concert featuring ten of Hawaii's best. If you would like to know more...visit PALM RECORDS website...tell them I sent you...Aloha JOE JOHN KAMEAALOHA ALMEIDA 1897- 1985 - Hana Ola Records This masterwork is the latest offering from Hawaiian music historian Harry B. Soria, Jr. and Hana Ola Records. The album spotlights the musical genius of John K. Almeida by presenting 22 performances and 21 original compositions. The well-written liner notes present an extensive "family history" and chronicle the professional career of "Hawaii's Blind Musician." John Almeida picked up the ukulele at age 4 and during his 87 years on Earth, he mastered that instrument, the mandolin, guitar, steel guitar, violin, banjo, bass, saxophone, piano and composed over 200 Hawaiian language compositions. The song list is familiar and impressive - Lei Hinahina, Holoholo Ka'a, Noho Paipai, Kanaka Waiwai, Kiss Me Love, and on, and on..... Mahalo to Harry B. Soria and Hana Ola Records for putting together this musical time capsule which preserves an era that should never be forgotten.
