Hawaiian Music What is
Music Laboratory Research-Genre Study-Ethnic Music-Hawaiian Music Research -> Genre Study -> Ethnic Music -> Hawaiian Music What is ethnic music? What element distinguishes an ethnic music style from other ethnic music styles? For example, what is the difference between Okinawa music and Scotland music? I think elements of music are (1) melody (scale), (2 ) chord, (3) rhythm, and (4) instruments. First, let's think about melody. Rock and Blues are easy examples, even though they are not ethnic music. Rock uses normal music scale while Blues includes blue-notes in its music scale. Next, think about chords. Rock uses simple chords (triad) while Jazz includes 7th in its chords. Chord progression of Jazz is more complicated than that of Rock as well. For rhythm, Rock uses 8 beat, Fusion uses 16 beat, Jazz uses 4 beat. Finally, think about musical instruments. It is easy to see differences between Classical music and Rock music. Especially, musical instruments are important elements of ethnic music, since each country has different music instruments. I am trying to capture features of each ethnic music style based on this idea, and to reproduce them with automated composing system. This page includes considerations that I faced when I embedded functions of ethnic music composition. About Hawaiian Music I am not sure that people consider Hawaiian music as ethnic music. But the music has very strong characteristics. Hawaiian music uses very slow sliding guitars and ukuleles. Guitar strings are tuned for major chord. (This kind of guitar is called slack key guitar.) So, Hawaiian music uses many major chords in its chord progression. I am not sure but I guess guitarist uses bottle neck and scratch strings with it. (I need more information, please help me.) Stitches in Time One of the goals of the Hawaiian quilting festival this weekend is to perpetuate the cultural art form By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto Star-Bulletin IT'S a quilting bee to beat the band. This weekend's inaugural Hawaiian Quilt Festival at Blaisdell Center offers a patchwork of activities. Displays, exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, a marketplace and hands-on practice cover each step in the quilting process - pattern tracing, cutting, laying out, pinning, basting, hemming or appliqueing, and quilting. "We'll have old quilt patterns and dressmaker's tracing paper for purchase at $2 for a two-yard sheet," said Augusta-Helen "Aunty Gussie" Bento, president of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project and co-chair of the three-day festival. "It's enough to trace one large quilt design and a couple of small designs. The patterns themselves stretch out to 40 or 48 inches." Bento said different quilt patterns will be available Saturday and Sunday, plus pencils for general use. "Then, people will be able to quilt on a horse that's there for community quilting," she said. Oahu and neighbor island quilters will lead workshops, such as stencils, Hawaiian tropical placemats, Hawaiian quilt pillow, miniature Hawaiian quilt, and designing a Hawaiian quilt. Cost will range from $26.50 to $75. Co-chair Elaine Zinn said festival goals are three-fold - "to help the public understand what the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is about, to perpetuate the art of Hawaiian quilting so that it continues to grow, and to let people know how to take care of their quilts, because our environment and insects are so threatening to textiles." The 16-year Research Project has documented and registered more than 900 quilts and 700 quilt patterns on all islands. People will be able to sign up at the festival for future registries. "The project is important to preserve the history of Hawaiian quilts," said Zinn, who produced the 13-part public television "Hawaiian Quilting" series, "and to preserve the actual quilts that are still with us, so they will last a few more generations. They are very precious." "It was the greatest show of friendship to share one's quilt patterns," said Elizabeth Akana, who can conjure a genteel picture of tutu (grandmothers) with flowers in their hair, gathered on a porch to share snitches of gossip and stitches of colorful threads. "The quilts are enlightening us about our history and bringing about a love of history, because when you're dealing with a quilt you've got to have love in your heart," Akana said. Meanwhile, people can take their own paper and pencil, and trace quilt patterns at Waianae Library, which has a prodigious collection of 400 patterns, with more patterns yet available at Kailua Library and Brigham Young University-Hawaii collections. Akana said of Hawaii's unique quilting process and product: "We're looking at love in fabric and thread." Hawaiian Shirts & Dresses
Hawaiian Shirts and Hawaiian Dresses photo shoot with Sondra Barker and Lindsay Hayes - December 2003 Hawaiian Shirts & Dresses Photo Shoot - December 2003 To feature our newest Hawaiian shirts, dresses, tops and bottoms, we headed out to a beach located a few hundred yards away from downtown Honolulu. For the December 2003 photo shoot, we chose Sand Island. While most people associate surfing with the North Shore of Oahu, there are other surf spots all around the island. Sand Island is located at the mouth of Honolulu Harbor, Oahu's major shipping port. Sand Island is a popular camp site for those who wish to rough it in a tent a stone throws away from downtown. On a typical day, one can find people crabbing, fishing, surfing, and canoe paddling in the waters just off-shore. This photoshoot marks the debut of Sondra Barker and Lindsay Hayes for AlohaFunWear.com. Sondra is a University of Hawaii student and has quite a funny streak. Lindsay is a hair stylist in Honolulu and agreed to be in the photo shoot after some gentle coaxing. Dave Randall modeled Hawaiian shirts for us in our February 2002 photo shoot at Makapuu Beach. The pictures below depict some fun and not-so-serious moments of our photo shoot as we tried to photograph our latest Hawaiian shirts and especially our different styles of Hawaiian dresses. We also included our newest super soft rayon Hawaiian shirts and dresses as well as matching Hawaiian print capri pants and halter top.
