Joan's equestrian skills were polished on the Eastern seaboard training, riding and showing Hunters, Show Jumpers and Steeplechasers. She competed professionally for over 12 years in Combined Training Events starting green horses Pre-Training thru Preliminary and Advance Level competitions. A Certified Riding Instructor of the American Riding Instructors Association, an Accredited Member of the American Society of Equine Appraisers and her B.A. in Horsemanship for Teaching/Schooling ensures an unsurpassed equestrian experience for all to enjoy. Cancellations- We require a 48 hour advance notice of cancellation to avoid FULL FARE charges of your reserved ride. No Shows and Late Notification of Cancellation will be charged FULL FARE of the reserved ride- NO EXCEPTIONS! Check-in Time- Meet at the pre-destined location at least30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of your ride. A 15 minute Pre-Ride Certification is required for all confirmed riders. During this time you will be introduced to your mount and provided with detailed safety instructions for your ride. Age and Physical Condition- Riders must be over 8 yearsof age and in good physical condition. Weight limit is 220 lbs. For your safety, we reserve the right to refuse anyone with whom we determineis in poor physical condition. Children aged 14 years and under must be accompanied by an adult. Children between the age of 14 and 18 must have writtenconsent from a parent and ALL riders must sign a compulsory waiver. Tack and Apparel - We provide Western saddles and tack unlessotherwise requested. We strongly recommend loose fitting long pantsand closed toe shoes are a must (preferably with a heel). We do have several pairs of boots and shoes to loan but size is limited. For your safety and enjoyment we provide only ASTM approved helmets for all riders. Each horse is equipped with a pack to securely carry your camera gear and water bottle. Experience- Rides are moderately safe for the first-time rider,as well as, the very experienced horseman. ALL rides will be modifiedas to overall experience level for the safety of ALL participants. Weather- Volcano is famous for it's intermittent showers. Rides go out rain or shine. However, in the event of inclement weather at the time of departure, outings may be rescheduled at our discretion. History- Volcano Village came into being with the adventof sightseers to the calderas of Kilauea in the late 1800's. At firstthe old wealthy 'Kama'aina' (born in Hawaii) families established vacationhomes in the area to escape the heat of Hilo and Honolulu during the summermonths. Much later during World War II the military established KilaueaMilitary Camp on the edge of Kilauea Crater, bringing many visitors. Surrounding the Village of Volcano are several large ranches as well as,Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which draws an many as 5,000 visitors daily. Today, Volcano Village is a close knit community made up mostly of artisans,retired Military Personnel, National Park employees and those seekingcool climates and volcanic activity at its finest! .:::BOTANICAL GARDEN CITY of the North Mayor urges the world to continue environmental advocacy By: William Jun Garcia SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union-City Mayor Mary Jane C. Ortega urged the citizenry to continue its awareness on environmental concerns to avert impending disasters. The Mayor, who was invited by the 1,200-members of the Global Advisory Council for Mayors in Ottawa, Canada last week, said that a continued promotion on our environment would help the world delay the greenhouse effect on the aftermath of a global warming or an irregular climate change. She warned that a continued promotion and the prevention of an unabated abuse and degradation of the environment would also slow down the effects of ice or glacial melting on our oceans and the eventual sea-level rise and atmospheric problems due to solar radiation and pollution on man. The Mayor, who is internationally recognized for including in her governance a strict implementation, protection and preservation of environment and clean air and also addressing its concerns, has initiated the establishment of a sanitary landfill, soon-to-be converted into an engineered landfill in Barangay Mameltac. She likewise initiated for the City Council, through Vice Mayor Bernardo Nardi Valero, to enact and approve a city ordinance, mandating public utility tricycle engines to be converted from two to four strokes to minimize smog emission that pollute the air. These programs are one reason why she was the only Asian invited to speak among 14 mayors from all over the world during the conference. She was also considered as the spokesperson for a developing city from a developing country. She also added that climate change could not be stopped rather it has just started as manifested by the unusual strong hurricanes, series of earthquakes and strong tsunamis happening throughout world. These disasters were earlier predicted by experts to happen 75 years (year 2080) from now but are now ironically occurring according to the Mayor. Among the attendants in the said conference were mayors or representatives from local government units of Seattle, Wash.; Kyoto, Japan; Madagascar; Bonn, Germany; New Zealand; European Union members of Parliament; a minister from Australia; and senators of Canada. Meanwhile, from Ottawa, Mayor Ortega was also able to attend the Christmas Party for children rendered by 20 Filipino- Canadian residents who are natives of San Fernando City headed by its president, Albert Floresca, whose wife is the niece of La Union Governor Victor F. Ortega.

Molokai - A guide to the most hawaiian island - Photo Tour 5 Kamakou & the Backside Geologists tell us that, at one time, there was a much gentler slope to the terrain on the north shore of Molokai. Here we call it "The Backside." The precipitous cliffs evident today resulted from a landslide of enormous proportions. Evidently the continuously pounding surf on this shore, over a gazillion years, undercut the land until one day, Splash! Huge pieces of the island fell off into the Pacific, leaving behind the world's highest sea cliffs which have been beautifully sculpted over the millennia by rain, wind and waves. At the highest point, the pali (cliffs in Hawaiian) is 2,600' (793m) from top to sea level. The photo above shows a small part of the pali looking west toward Kalawao on the Makanalua peninsula. Notice the triangle shaped moku (island) at the right center. That same moku is at the left center of this photo looking east from Kalawao on the peninsula. Historians claim that, in ancient times, most of the valleys along the north shore were well populated. Today, however, only a few accept the challenges and difficulties inherent in making this part of Molokai their year-round home. Outside supplies can only be brought in by boat, during the summer, when the ocean is calm or on foot over the mountain from the south side of the island. Near the top of the eastern Molokai mountain, is the 2,774 acre (1123ha) Kamakou Preserve. Here you will find more than 250 species of Hawaiian plants, at least 219 of which can be found nowhere else in the world, plus a variety of extremely rare Hawaiian birds. From the preserve, the grandeur of the north shore valleys can be appreciated as they stretch toward to the Pacific. In 1982, Molokai Ranch granted a conservation easement to The Nature Conservancy to restore the area and protect it. Access to Kamakou Preserve is available through monthly, guided hikes. Advance reservations with The Nature Conservancy office on Moloka`i are required. While the boardwalks of Atlantic City or Santa Cruz may be wider and more famous, the Kamakou boardwalk is certainly unique. It snakes through the rain forest and offers fortunate hikers a glimpse of Mother Nature's handiwork that can only be found on Molokai. Every trip to the back side offers a new look at this spectacular area. While the pali and mountain are the same, time of day, season, surf and weather conditions combine to create new panoramas. As if it were a different island, here, sea spray and early morning light create a breathtaking, almost surreal vista.
