HCV is located in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (which is ~200 miles from Hawaii Island, where the active Hawaiian volcanoes are situated). HCV member Institutions on the island of Hawaii are the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory ( HVO ).At the present time, HCV does not directly offer internships or take volunteers for research experience atthe active volcanoes. However, the USGS/HVO does have a volunteer program. The Pu`u `O`o eruption of Kilauea volcano celebrated it's 23rd Birthday on 3 Jan 2006. This site launched on on 11 June 1995 and had its 1,000,000th visitor in 2000 What's in a name? For those of you who were wondering, "Volcanology" involves the study of volcanoes and volcanic activity, such as at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, which is depicted above. Molokai, Hawaii - The Friendly Islands HAWAII MOLOKAI The Friendly Islands Withapproximately 50% of its population having native Hawaiian ancestry this island is themost traditional of the islands that are accessible to tourists. Untouched by high risedevelopments there are no traffic lights, shopping complexes or fast food chains. However, whatMolokai does have to offer is 260 miles of natural beauty framed by a necklace of ancientfish ponds along the southern shore. It has the world's highest sea cliffs rising anawesome 3,000 feet above the coastline, Hawaii's longest waterfall and also its largestwhite sand beach three miles long. Lacking modern entertainment venue, Molokai boastsnumerous cultural and family events and the locals guard their laid-back lifestyle withpride. In the heart ofthe island is Kaunakakai, a one street town lined with small family-run businesses whichhave changed little since the 1920s and resembles the set of an old Western movie. Earlierthis century, pineapples were shipped in their millions to Honolulu canneries from here. ProbablyMolokai's best known visitor attraction is Kalaupapa, site of the ministry of Belgiummissionary Father Damien De Veuster. Now a National Park, this five square mile peninsulawas once a place of exile for sufferers of leprosy. Separated from the rest of the islandby huge cliffs, it is reached by mounting a mule for the three mile ride down the 1,600foot cliff trail, or alternatively by one of the world's shortest flights (five minutes)departing from Molokai's main airport. It is also possible to hike the trail, but a permitis required. Other offeringsinclude sailing or kayaking around the coastline, deep sea fishing, playing golf, or ifyou are feeling active, hiking the Kamakou Preserve, a tropical rainforest - home to rarebirds and plants, insects, and land snails. Allow a full dayfor a round trip drive along the southern shore to Halawa Valley, where along the way youwill see quaint Churches, beautiful beaches and the largest concentration of ancient fishponds, some dating back to the 13th century. Ancient Hawaiianhistory says that the hula was created by the goddess Laka on the mountain range nearMaunaloa and today the major annual event on Molokai is the celebration of the birth ofthe hula. It is held on the third Saturday of May each year and features performances ofancient hula, traditional Hawaiian crafts and lectures and tours to significant historicalsites. Volcano Watch [ TEXT ONLY ] Volcano Watch Volcano Watch is a weekly newsletter written by the scientists at the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It is published in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald's Sunday newspaper and the West Hawai'i Today's Monday newspaper, and posted here the following Monday or Tuesday. While primarily addressed to the residents of the Big Island of Hawai`i, some articles may have a broader scope. Article topics may range from volcanic features on the Big Island, volcanic hazards, informational topics of Long Valley, Montserrat, or Alaska, to topics about the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Latest Issue: January 19, 2006: Revolution in thinking about Kilauea's explosions comes to HVO: Part 1 Previous Issue: January 12, 2005: 2005: Another relatively quiet year for Hawaiian earthquakes Kilauea Eruption Status From Volcano Watch, January 19, 2006: During the past week, the number of earthquakes located beneath Kilauea remains at levels typical of the current eruption. Inflation of the summit continues. Eruptive activity at Pu`u `O`o also continues. On clear nights, glow is visible from several vents within the crater and on the southwest side of the cone. Lava is still flowing through the PKK lava tube from its source on the flank of Pu`u `O`o to the ocean, with scattered surface flows breaking out of the tube. Surface flows on the pali are visible at night (weather permitting) from the end of Chain of Craters Road. As of January 19, lava is entering the ocean at East Lae`apuki, in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. The active lava bench continues to regrow following the major collapse of November 28. Access to the ocean entry and the surrounding area remains closed, due to significant hazards. If you visit the eruption site, check with the rangers for current updates, and remember to carry lots of water when venturing out onto the flow field. There were two earthquakes beneath Hawai`i Island reported felt within the past week. A magnitude-3.6 earthquake occurred at 11:04 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, and was located 7 km (5 miles) southeast of Hualalai summit at a depth of 28 km (17 miles). A magnitude-4.7 earthquake occurred at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, and was located 16 km (10 miles) offshore and east of Na`alehu at a depth of 40 km (25 miles). Mauna Loa is not erupting. During the past week, the count of earthquakes located beneath the volcano remains at low levels. Inflation continues, but at a slower rate since early October 2005.
