The kalua pig was too watery for me and lacked enough of the smokey taste I was expecting. I also ordered the Curry beef and I guess I missed the point because I thought it would be a beef curry stew. Instead it was the kalbi shortrib meat (boneless) in a dark curry sauce. Does Zippys serve things like this or is it a Lukoki invention? Oh well. We did try Onos in Half Moon Bay. Really excellant kalua pig and nice size portion. He worked at genetech for like 15-20 years, and now wants to start a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant in Tanferan Shopping Mall. Pretty crazy, but his wife is behind him (and allowing him to do it). Dunno when theyre opening yet, but I hear sometime early in 2006. Ill have to check it out and let ya know how it is. We stopped there the other night and their Kalua Pig is awesome, really moist. My gf and I didnt try their Hawaiian BBQ items yet, but we did try their desserts, Banana Kine & Coconut Fritters, theyre like the hawaiian malasadas. They have a really big menu, its not like the Hawaiian BBQ places in LA. And theyre open til MIDNIGHT everyday! Well definitely come back and try their BBQ. Kaululaau was a mischievous young man, always getting in trouble, and when he accidentally destroyed an entire crop of breadfruit, his fathers punishment was to banish him to Lanai. At the time, Lanai was an unexplored island, and evil spirits were believed to reside there. But the energetic Kaululaau cleared the land and found the island to be free of such spirits. In time, people began to settle the island. Perhaps a few evil spirits did lurk around Lanai, however, because frustrated residents trying to establish an economy on the island seemed to fall under a curse. Sugarcane and cattle were just two ambitious enterprises that came and went without success. Everything changed in 1922, when James Dole arrived on Lanai and purchased the entire island. The price tag? A cool $1.1 million. Dole had the magic touch. He wanted to grow pineapple on the island, and his efforts were remarkably successful. Soon, canned pineapple from Lanai, a product that no one had even heard of beforebecame a huge hit on the mainland United States. As large plantations were built, the island became a major exporter of this sweet, fleshy fruit; in fact, at one time, tiny Lanaproduced 75 percent of the worlds pineapple! To accommodate the increasing number of workers arriving on Lanai to toil in the pineapple fields, Dole built a plantation camp in the flatlands. This is now Lanai City. For the next few decades, Lanai was widely known as Hawaiis vibrant "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were covered with pineapple. In the late 1980s, pineapples "crown" began to wither, and the industry no longer turned a profit. Now owned by Castle & Cooke Resorts, Lanai has reinvented itself as a one-of-a-kind vacation destination, with two upscale resorts and golf courses. Only about 100 acres of pineapple for local consumption remain on the island. Each summer, Lanai celebrates its unique heritage with the Pineapple Festival, a colorful event paying homage to the islands favorite fruit. Later, introduced to the fabrics and sewing techniques of American missionaries, islanders developed the elaborate appliqud flower, leaf and vine designs that have become the hallmark of a "Hawaiian quilt." Today, quilts are being made throughout Hawai'i by women and men of all ages, professions and ethnicities who stitch away in quilt shops, in classes and at home. Many of today's quiltmakers combine design motifs from the past with creative ideas of their own, producing textiles as unique as the artists themselves. Helen Friend is one Hawai'i artist whose quilts reflect current events and contemporary vision. A passionate needlewoman since the age of five, it wasn't until 1985 that she discovered quilting as a form of expression. While her large quilts and hangings honor traditional patterns, she prefers to explore her own ideas and create something totally new. "Every quilt should have a reason behind it; that's where the mana (spiritual power) comes in," says Friend. Friend has drawn inspiration from the challenges of major competitions, from nature's power, from news articles, from conservation work on historic textiles, and from class assignments at the University of Hawai'i fiber arts program. Since her first quilt 10 years ago, Friend has tried to make a quilt a year to enter in local, juried mixed-media exhibitions. Her first piece, Liberty Quilt, represented Hawai'i at the Great American Quilt Festival in 1986, a competitive show held in New York to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. After Liberty Quilt, Friend turned her attention homeward and created a series of quilts that originate in traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs but depart from rigid convention. Her latest creation is Red Wall, hand-sewn in reverse appliqu. Says the artisan, "The idea first came from a color combination I saw a few years ago. But as I began to work, the catastrophe of Rwanda unfolded. And as I finished the project, the war in Bosnia continued. I like to think that each stitch recognizes a life lost." No matter what project shes involved in, its clear that Friend loves her work. "To me," she says with a satisfied smile, "quilting is a most satisfying way of recording my life."
