Facing Future Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's 1993 CD "Facing Future" includes the medley "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" which has been heard in numerous movies, television shows and commercials. Israel - better known as "Bruddah Iz" or "Iz" - who passed away in 1997, was far more than an entertainer. He was loved deeply by all the people of Hawaii. In a sense, he was a living hero in the Islands, and upon his death he was given the profound honor of lying in state in the capital rotunda in Honolulu so that his thousands of loyal fans could pay their loving last respects. Waikiki beach is the most famous of all the Hawaii beaches. It is almost perfect in every way - long days of endless sun, fine golden sand, excellent surfing and body surfing, a long stretch of shallow sandy bottom lagoon ideal for swimmers, both inexperienced and experienced, protected areas with no waves and exposed areas with frolicking waves, lots of water activities from catamaran cruises, hobby cat sailing, paddle boats and snorkelling trips and most of all, lots of people, lots of high rise hotels with fantastic views, lots of restaurants and good nightlife. Waikiki Beach is located on the sheltered south coast of Oahu a few miles to the east of downtown Honolulu. Waikiki stretches for almost four miles in an almost unbroken stretch of soft white sand and has over a hundred high rise hotels to choose from and lots of smaller inns and units for rent but only a few of these are absolute beachfront. Waikiki beach stretches for over 2 miles and has several different facets. The eastern side of Waikiki is dominated by the protruding cement pier known as "The Slippery Wall" where surfers and body surfers show their grit by surfing right up to the pier, and sometimes making it clear over the wall. The wall is a man made structure to help protect sand erosion and the beach here is officially called Kuhio Beach. This saltwater swimming pool breaks the surf and allows for calm swimming in any conditions making it ideal for families with small children. A little further east of the pier, away from Waikiki, is Kapiolani Park with its lovely walkways through trees and picnic tables. The beach here is much quieter if you want to get away from the crowds and the swimming good. The wall stops near the flower-adorned statue of Duke Kahanamoku Statue, the reveered royal surfer of the early 1900's. The statue marks the spot where surf lessons are given on the beach and boards of all sizes are rented. The surf at this point is the most popular along Waikiki Beach and whilst the surf is never dangerous, stray surf boards and racing outrigger canoes have caused many accidents. Although the surf at Waikiki is not the most challenging on the island, it is certainly the most reliable. Winter surf is moderate whereas the raging winter surf on the north shore is for experienced surfers only. And when the surf on the north shore goes completely flat in summer, the surf at Waikiki remains good. Waikiki was where the Hawaiian royalty would come to during summer for their surfing and relaxing. Up to this point, the beach is open to the shore front and main road, but to the west of here, hotels claim the beach front and the main road is forced inland from the beach. However, public access to all beaches is allowed and even the grand resorts do not object to passers-by walking through their properties. Several catamarans and racing outrigger canoes are available for rides around the Waikiki surf at this point. The beach gets progressively narrower until just beyond the famous original Waikiki Hotel, the Pink Royal (now Sheraton) where high tide comes right up to the seawall. The beach then opens up again and is officially called the Fort DeRussy Beach and reaches its widest point near the crescent shaped bay holding back Ala Wai Harbour. Here the sea is usually dead calm and great for swimming with sandy bottom and shallow water. Casual water activities are also popular. Beyond Ala Wai Harbour is the equally attractive setting of Ala Moana Beach Park with its paved pathways, cove beach, joggers and fishermen and views of Downtown Honolulu but a stone throw away. Although Waikiki has almost all Oahu's accommodation, there are lots of other lovely beaches around Oahu which can be explored by car. Molokai, Hawaii - The Friendly Islands HAWAII MOLOKAI The Friendly Islands Withapproximately 50% of its population having native Hawaiian ancestry this island is themost traditional of the islands that are accessible to tourists. Untouched by high risedevelopments there are no traffic lights, shopping complexes or fast food chains. However, whatMolokai does have to offer is 260 miles of natural beauty framed by a necklace of ancientfish ponds along the southern shore. It has the world's highest sea cliffs rising anawesome 3,000 feet above the coastline, Hawaii's longest waterfall and also its largestwhite sand beach three miles long. Lacking modern entertainment venue, Molokai boastsnumerous cultural and family events and the locals guard their laid-back lifestyle withpride. In the heart ofthe island is Kaunakakai, a one street town lined with small family-run businesses whichhave changed little since the 1920s and resembles the set of an old Western movie. Earlierthis century, pineapples were shipped in their millions to Honolulu canneries from here. ProbablyMolokai's best known visitor attraction is Kalaupapa, site of the ministry of Belgiummissionary Father Damien De Veuster. Now a National Park, this five square mile peninsulawas once a place of exile for sufferers of leprosy. Separated from the rest of the islandby huge cliffs, it is reached by mounting a mule for the three mile ride down the 1,600foot cliff trail, or alternatively by one of the world's shortest flights (five minutes)departing from Molokai's main airport. It is also possible to hike the trail, but a permitis required. Other offeringsinclude sailing or kayaking around the coastline, deep sea fishing, playing golf, or ifyou are feeling active, hiking the Kamakou Preserve, a tropical rainforest - home to rarebirds and plants, insects, and land snails. Allow a full dayfor a round trip drive along the southern shore to Halawa Valley, where along the way youwill see quaint Churches, beautiful beaches and the largest concentration of ancient fishponds, some dating back to the 13th century. Ancient Hawaiianhistory says that the hula was created by the goddess Laka on the mountain range nearMaunaloa and today the major annual event on Molokai is the celebration of the birth ofthe hula. It is held on the third Saturday of May each year and features performances ofancient hula, traditional Hawaiian crafts and lectures and tours to significant historicalsites. Often, however, the past itself is a key: to the future. The past is a better such key, in fact, than is the present. It is improbable that everything that can happen is happening today. Something brand new may start, of course, but something that has happened in the past is more likely to occur again, regardless of what's going on today. It is in this light that a new feature story presents the outlines of Kilauea's explosive past. Kilauea is not exploding now, but it has done so in a small way in the recent past and in a big way during the past hundreds to thousands of years. If we are to know the whole gamut of what Kilauea can do, it behooves us to examine its past as carefully as possible. Explosions can be hazardous to both people on the ground and traveling in jet airliners. The more we know about Kilauea's explosions, the better chance we have of mitigating their risk to us.
