Hawaii is one of the world's most popular destinations, offering the quintessential vacation thanks to the combination of varied tropical natural beauty, great weather, warm water, and the amenities of a USA state. The Hawaiian Islands are a group of volcanos that have risen up over a "hot spot" of molten rock that wells up from deep in the earth's interior. As the ocean floor slowly moves over this spot, islands are born. They are then carried towards the northwest. The chain of Hawaiian islands were formed in the order: Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii. Because of this age difference, each of the Hawaiian islands exhibits a distinct character. The younger island, Hawaii, has the highest summit and active volcanic features, but relatively smooth topology, like all the islands had when they rose out of the sea. Much of it is relatively arid and covered in bare lava fields. The oldest island, Kauai, has dramatic scenery formed by erosion, and the lushest vegetation. The other Hawaiian islands are in between, with Oahu having more fluted eroded mountains than Maui, where the dormant crater is younger and higher, and could still spring back to life. HCV is located in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (which is ~200 miles from Hawaii Island, where the active Hawaiian volcanoes are situated). HCV member Institutions on the island of Hawaii are the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory ( HVO ).At the present time, HCV does not directly offer internships or take volunteers for research experience atthe active volcanoes. Would you really order rice AND potato salad if you had a choice? The problem is that too much of the menu is "sort of" Japanese, so it seems not quite right, though it may be very authentic Hawaiian. I came thinking I would get a good hawaiian BBQ like those I had enjoyed while a college freshman in Honolulu, but the BBQ chicken here is not even close. Ask anyone from Hawaii what they miss the most about home and the response is usually "the food". I can't tell you how happy I was to discover that L&L has come to Manhattan! My mouth waters everytime I think about it. They also have Portuguese sausage, which any local knows is a staple to a true local breakfast. I've eaten everything on the menu and I have to agree about the saimin, not the true local style. My only complaint...the one on 8th ave doesn't always play Hawaiian music.
