MeatHenge: Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches « Holidays over, Farmer's Market back, Fatted Calf returns! | Main | World's Best BBQ Grills - Denver Colorado » Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches Posted by Biggles on January 06, 2005 This semi-new local restaurant, Wailiki Hawaiian BBQ, has sparked easily the most heated discussion amoung our immediate circle of friends & family. Apparently my sister and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Meathead visited this place a month ago and were served nearly inedible food. The food I received was worth returning to. My co-worker EarAche wasn't impressed with the one in Hercules, the L&L Hawaiian BBQ . Why do these two restaurants have identical menus? Why are there no vegetables? Except for the strands of cabbage under the fried food? I've never been to Hawaii and it took a few days to sort things out. For those of you concerned, it's called Plate Lunch. No matter what the restaurant's name is, it's called Plate Lunch. You expect a scoop of rice or two and a scoop of macky salad. After that it's up to you how it gets filled. Amound the top seller is the Chicken Katsu, a flatted chicken patty that's breaded then deep fried. This was quite tasty and I had absolutely no problem eating it. But remember, if you order the regular meal you're getting enough food for two VERY hungry people. There's a mini version available, I would highly suggest you start there. And I mean it. I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs and the regular was clearly too much, even to stuff myself silly. All for $5.50 (sans the soda). My sister ordered the BBQ Short Ribs and ended up leaving most if not all of it on the table. I can understand that, Beef Short Ribs are a fatty faire and if not cooked really long and really slow can be highly nasty to injest, or not as the case may be. Mr. Meathead ordered the Deep Fried Shrimp Regular meal. Again, not a happy camper and left it all there for the waitress to dispose of. I can understand it, most breaded shrimp meals are small shrimp with some breaded coating that ends up being most of your meal. This is no good, which is why I don't order the breaded deep fried shrimp when I attend these eateries. Just something to take note of for the future, eh? The Loco Moco sounds interesting, I may try it in the future or make it at home. It's a homemade hamburger steak & egg with gravy, interesting. Another possibility might be the Saimin (noodle soup) or one of their breakfasts, Spam with Eggs & Rice. Hey man, don't laugh. The Hawaiians consume the greatest amounts of spam, it can be just fine when done correctly. Do you want to try the Spam Musubi? I dunno. I ordered the Mahi Mahi Plate Lunch today, it was 'okay'. But I wouldn't order it again. Big D says that is just pre-battered fish from a bag. I agree. That was a large Nope. Probably be even a larger something else later on. Big D ordered the Teriyaki Plate Lunch. He says, "It wasn't really bad, it wasn't really good." Okay, I'll buy that. But keep in mind, he's been to Hawaii many times and has homemade teriyaki sauce made special. He knows the full spectrum of how good it can get. As of today the way to go would be either the Chicken Katsu Lunch Plate or the Kalua Pork Lunch Plate (a daily special). The Kalua Pork is a smoked pulled pork meat plate with a light sauce of some kind, almost can't tell it's on there. I'd eat it every day it's so good. No fat or craziness going on, just full on pulled pork that smells as good as it tastes. Kersmakyumbo. To sum it all up, these Hawaiian Plate Lunch eateries can be a mixed bag of goodies. Pay attention to what you're ordering and remember to go home and eat a salad right away. Ask around too, since they are all not of the same franchise you could very well run across a real gem such as Zippy's based in the Hawaiian Islands (Thank you Big D for the tip). SoCal has seen a lot of Hawaiian restaurants open up in the last year or 2, too. Spam Musubi is best made fresh, like you see at potlucks, not wrapped in plastic like L&L sells theirs. Only my teenage son (aka "The Bottomless Pit") will order it on occasion for a quick bite. He usually gets the Loco Moco with just rice cuz he doesn't like the mac salad. I usually get the BBQ plate and have the rest to nuke at work the next day. Hubby and I both like the Chicken Katsu or BBQ Chicken at these places. Where do you work that you can fry up some chicken??? I wanna work there! Best I could do at my work was share the calories over the holidays with my cookies, candy and homemade Sweet Chex Mix. So, it takes me a while to find new restaurants and to see what's been going on around me. Turns out I'm usually a year or two behind. It's something I've learned to deal with over the years. I keep myself busy fying chicken at work! Uh yeah, this is a pretty low-key place to work. Plus I've been here a long long time, nearly 15 years. So, if I want to fry chicken for everyone, they let me. I have electric skillets, toasters and other things here as well. I haven't done much cooking here lately, but I used to make breakfasts for everyone. You know, eggs, toast, bacon and/or ham steak. I also used to have a charcoal fired grill here, took it home though. Boy, having a huge pile of freshly grilled meatses sure is nice to have during the week at lunch. I think I stopped doing it because it isn't really convenient. Cleaning up is tough, plus I have to answer the phone from time to time. Maui Windsurfing

The Maui Windsurfing DAILY Report MWR Daily Report May 17th, 1996 Looks like there's a good puff out there. I'm writing this ahead of time cause I'm gonna get so tired I won't be able to type. tim ATTENTION: Will the blonde woman sailing uppers on Ezzy wave gear this afternoon please e-mail kent@maui.net :-) Wow! What can I say? It just doesn't get any better than this. For my sizeanything from 4.2 to 4.7 was perfect. The northeast trade winds were sosteady that sail choice was a matter of personal preference. I took my4.7 thinking that if the wind backed off a bit I would still be fullypowered. The wind never eased, in fact, there wasn't a single hole to befound anywhere! After all the slalom sailing from days past, it was good to finally getback on a wave board. I could tell it was going to be a good session fromthe moment I hooked in and started heading upwind from the launch atkook's beach (Kanaha). Making my way out towards upper reef, everythingseemed so well balanced and in control. I could take my hands off theboom and just hang back and cruise. I was hitting jumps on the way out,just to get warmed up, and not loose any speed. Yes, this was going tobe a good session! Imagine how stoked I was to see Robby Naish and DonMontague sailing by. This is how I dreamed it would always be. At Uppers, I found myseff in waves that were shoulder high, nothingterribly radical, but perfectly matched for my ability level. Occaisionally a logo-high set would roll in and challenge my nerves. Igladly took the challenge this time and went for it. I managed a few nicebottom turns and off-the-lips. Yes, this was wavesailing at it's finest. The sun is out. It's warm, the water saphire blue and so refreshing. Breathing the fresh air, naturally cleansed from travelling thousands ofmiles over open ocean, was envigorating. It was spectacular looking upand seeing Halealkela rising to over 10,000 feet in the foreground and tothe opposite, the rugged and mist-covered West Maui mountains and Iaovalley. Rainbows, palm trees, green pineapple and cane fields. It's alltoo much to take in at one time. Someone pinch me. I've been hereexactly one year, but I'm still amazed at this place, and it still seemsall too good to be true. After sailing for about an hour, Kent shows up and we greet each otherwith smiles and shouts. Eeee-hah! We slashed around some more until Igot too tired to continue. I figured it was time to quit while I'm stillahead and save this scene for another day. Gary Back to May, 96

Now before you turn away, thinking that Hawaii isn't exactly known for barbecue let me point out a few things. First, Hawaii is home to the largest privately owned cattle ranch in America. Second, Hawaii is surrounded by a wide diversity of seafood. Third, Luau. When the first Polynesians arrived in the Hawaiian Islands, they found nothing to eat. The Islands themselves, being very new geologically and very isolated had little in the way of indigenous life. The Polynesians brought with them, pigs, dogs, chickens, taro and sweet potatoes. These plus whatever seafood they could catch became the staple of life. After James Cook arrived in Hawaii, a steady stream of newcomers started arriving, bringing with them plants and animals from their native lands. Chief among these were missionaries from New England who brought cows, horses, sheep, and goats as well as a wide variety of new plants. This introduction of new foods and traditions changed the Hawaiian diet greatly. As American business began to move in and develop large plantations, new cash crops, like sugar cane and pineapples were introduced. To man the plantations, immigrants were brought to Hawaii as laborers from places like China, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Each new wave in immigrants brought a new cooking tradition with them. What developed from all this is known as "Local Food". Local Food is an East-West Pacific mix created in the 1920s and 30s by lunch wagon cooks and small stores and restaurants. Typical Local Food meals are lunch plates which consist of rice and meat covered in gravy, a raw fish dish called Poke served with either salt and seaweed or chili peppers, sesame oil or soy sauce. Also popular is Teriyaki, which is used to prepare all kinds of meat. As you can see, Hawaiian food is a unique cuisine created from a much diversified background. It is common to see restaurants that serve American, Chinese, Korean and Local Food. And next door you'll find a place that serves Barbeque. A particular favorite in the Islands is grilled fish. What kind of fish you ask? How about, Aku, Ahi and Albacore (Tuna); Marlins; Opakapaka, Kalekale, Onaga, Uku and Taape (Snappers); Hapuu (Grouper); Ulua, Akule and Opelu (Jacks); Ono; Squid and Octopus; as well as all the shellfish like Opihi, Wana (Sea Urchins), Black Crab, Lobsters, Shrimp and Prawns.Now, about that Luau. Despite what Trader Vic or Don Ho might lead you to believe that Luau is a very rare festival in Hawaii. The sheer cost and effort of purchasing a pig, storing it until cooking time, preparing the Imu (traditional Luau cooking pit), preparing the loads of raw fish and additional dishes, is quite the undertaking, so several recipe variations have popped up to those of the formal Luau. In recent years a new tradition of cooking has evolved. Called Hawaiian Regional Cuisine, chefs have begun to put away the Spam (Hawaii is the largest per capita consumer of Spam) and have started to develop a new flavor. Mixing the cooking traditions of the Orient with that of the United States and using local products.
