The waves break and slowly ripple across the reef one wave after the other, truly mesmerizing, like a moving Japanese garden. The garden view is of Mt. Mekana (famed Bali Hai) with its cascading waterfalls. What pleasure to the senses. The four poster bed made of giant bamboo is from Bali and the expansive room is dominated by a 100 year old life-size seated Buddha from Japan. Peace and tranquility abound. There’s a spacious master bath with both shower and Jacuzzi, where you sit and watch the sunset or perhaps enormous sea turtles or dolphins and whales in the distance. The second bedroom has high beamed ceilings, a wall of glass facing the ocean and a queen bamboo bed and Balinese teak furniture. The third bedroom has a pair of twin beds, curved beamed ceilings and an ocean view. The second bathroom is very large with a double sink and Jacuzzi bath. This is where I had my first experience with Hawaiian style plate lunch several years ago. I used to live down the street, and would stop in quite frequently. There are many islanders in this area. So, you can imagine that this place is always packed. Since, John and I often share food we usually have to agree on what we are going to eat. We decided on two Katsu Musubi and a mini plate of Barbecue Chicken. The musubi was perfect. The nori was crisp to the very end, even with the generous helping of tasty gravy in the rice. The Barbecue Chicken was very moist and flavorful. The macaroni salad is the best here. I love mixing the rice and the macaroni salad in the together. Makes my tummy happy. This L&L has malasadas on special occasions, but it’s been awhile. I hear that there will be a new L&L in Renton shortly. At home we all know the nice restaurants for that special dinner, the local places for good Chinese or Italian food, and even the hole-in-the-walls which we like to think only we know about. When we come to Hawaii we are clueless. We may read Frommer’s or Fodor's and get an idea of what's available, or buy a good book like Robert and Cindy Carpenter's Hawaii Restaurant Guide. More often we tend to eat at our hotel or someplace nearby that "seems" good or even look for the nearest Denny's or McDonalds. Too often we find ourselves spending good money for food that's simply ok or worse. I'll always remember that the worst Chinese food my wife and I ever had was in San Francisco's Chinatown. We had no idea where to eat, so we just picked a place at random. The food was terrible! Matthew Gray understood this problem very well. As an accomplished chef and food critic for the Honolulu Advertiser, Gray had eaten in almost every restaurant on Oahu. He knew that there were really good places to eat, but that there were also quite a few pretty bad places also. After over ten years of experiencing the good and bad of Hawaii's restaurants, Matthew and his partner Keira Nagai, who also had worked for years in the food industry, decided to start their own business to share their knowledge of Oahu's restaurants with those of us who know far too little.
