East Maui volcano (Haleakala), Hawai`i [ TEXT ONLY ] Hualalai Lo`ihi East Maui, or Haleakala-- A Potentially Hazardous Volcano View east across Haleakala Crater, with young cinder cones in foreground. When asked about Hawaiian volcanoes, most people imagine the Island of Hawai`i and its eruptions at Kilauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes. But East Maui volcano has witnessed at least ten eruptions in thepast 1,000 years, and numerous eruptions have occurred there in the past 10,000 years. Thus, East Maui's long eruptive history and recent activity indicate that the volcano will erupt in the future. Haleakala National Park is the most visited part of East Maui. The Hawaiian name Hale-a-ka-la (lit., house of the sun), is now nearly synonymous with the entire shield of East Maui volcano. Early Hawaiians, however, applied the name only to the summit area, the site where the demigod Maui snared the sun and forced it to slow its journey across the sky. The oldest lava flow exposed on East Maui is about 1.1 million years in age. It is part of a sequence of flows emplaced near the end of shield building on East Maui. The time estimated to build a volcano from ocean floor to the end of its shield-building stage is thought by some scientists to be about 0.6 million years. East Maui volcano probably began its growth about 2.0 million years ago. Volcanism of the past 30,000 years on East Maui has been focused along the southwest and east rift zones. These two volcanic axes together form one gently curving arc that passes from La Perouse Bay (southwest flank of East Maui) through Haleakala Crater to Hana on the east flank. The alignment continues east beneath the ocean as Haleakala Ridge, one of the longest rift zones along the Hawaiian Islands volcanic chain. The Maui Windsurfing DAILY Report MWR Daily Report September 23rd, 1997 I ran the other way!... Well, it happened... (actually a lot of happened but I'll get to that) What happened? The first north swell of the winter happened. Came in to Maui last night and was glorious at 10-15'. Unfortunately, although it seemed windy, it was one of those onshore "fools winds" But nobody was that foolish. I hung around Hoo'kipa for about an hour to see if anyone was gonna dare it but I was stuck talkin story with the homeys. Then, a light went off in my pea brain.... it was tellin me, "Go to the south shore you wind maggot! Can't you see that if it's onshore on the north shore that its probably windy as hell on the south shore.?" I had to answer myself by truckin on down there. I wasn't disappointed. It was fully 5.0 (more like 4.7 but I was too stoked to come back and re-rig) and the waves were like head high. Fully bashable.. I did have one negative incident and that was when I was standing in waist deep water, playin with my lines when suddenly I look up and there's some giant BIC board bearing down on me. I make a frantic leap and barely get out of the way but I hear this most terrible sound of a "bonk." I realize I'm still alive but I see this guy who barely speak s English (he barely speaks at all cause I'm screamin and yellin at him for almost killin me.) I have to admit that I fully went off on the guy, especially when I see that there's a ding in my brand new, virgin and unreal stick. I was goin frickin bananas! (You boardheads that know me can quit laughing NOW!) Well, I sorta got my composure back and told him to meet me at the beach. (We were at Maui Sunset) At the beach I tell him that I'm sorry for yelling and he blurbs off something about paying for the ding in my board. Actually, I can hardly understand this fellow but he now has my attention as he's talkin my language, MONEY! We settle on a price for the repair ($50) and I again apologize for lighting up like a volcano on him. He says something like, "it's OK." So I feel like everybody is allright now.... the guy goes his way I look at my brand new board which is now just another stick on the street Surf life will never be the same..... I have always loved seeing how happy couples are to receive beautiful Hawaii wedding photographs and video. I know most couples who plan a Hawaii wedding would like to have an excellent chance to get a Romantic Sunset Photograph at the end of their Hawaii wedding. Sadly most locations won't have a sunset and most photographers don't know how to capture it on film correctly even if it did happen. New - There are many couples who come to Hawaii who think that the weather in Hawaii is always nice. Many advertisements offer a sunset wedding package even though the sunset is on the opposite side of the island. This is quite common on Kauai and Oahu. People just don't ask enough questions. Hawaii also gets rain all the time. I worked on Kauai for six years and have seen it rain on far too many weddings. The sunsets are almost never visible.Nearly 50% of Kauai weddings get rain. Hanalei gets so much rain you could have a very wet vacation. It can be very nice but you never know. Maui's free locations are usually very small and crowded. The last two times I was on Maui it rained in Wailea and Lahina. I have seen as many as 14 couples show up at the same beach for a wedding.Oahu is fun and has good shopping, I don't consider it a romantic place. Many couples sit in traffic on their wedding day. I know the best sunset wedding location in Hawaii - and it's free. The sunsets are the best in Hawaii all year. It's like a machine - almost every night. Up at Waikoloa, just 25 miles from Kailua Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii, the rainfall is about 6 inches a year. Very little rain and excellent hotels and activities.What a great combination . Other locations on Hawaii Island aren't nearly as nice. I know several of the very best Licensed Ministersin Hawaii and we are offering an unbeatable wedding package. One pro color film, one digital and one backup. This is a slow move to digital. Pro film is still nice with bright highlights - like sunset. Digital images are made availabe on your free web site. I am not substituting to save money on film, it's just that digital is so nice. Actually I am spending lots of money because of the additional cameras, flash and memory cards. Also digital creates endless hours on the computer, but I feel it's worth it now - with the new cameras available. I am always striving to be the very best I can. The prints from digital are made on the same pro photo paper at our lab - made to last 100 years. Digital has arrived and it requires photographers to be computer geeks. I have been editing digital video for years already. Another really great feature about having everything on CD is my ability to edit in some of the best images from the photo shoot when making wedding DVD's - really impressive. Recently we had some bad weather pass by Hawaii. The clouds turned really nice colors after sunset - very very low light and after sunset. With the digital camera I was ready to capture the moment. The scene lasted less than TWO MINUTES. The flexability of digital allowed me dial in the equivelent of ASA 800 film to capture another very special photograph for them - along with the pro film - it's an added benefit that doesn't take away from what I've been doing for many years. This flexability (changing film speed in 10 seconds) is really wonderful. The other benefits of having everything on CD things like cropping and simple retouching at no charge. Also I can make an unlimited number of images. This is great for Photo Journalism style combined with the traditional. Also, if we have everything on CD, magazine style wedding album pages are possible in PhotoShop CS - really cool. Digital cannot be ignored and we are already a digital studio (video).Digital Video is way more complex than Digital Stills. Mention (email me) that you read this and I'll make a free automated website with photographs from your wedding. Available in 1 day. This is nice for family to see your wedding pictures on the net. Usually I email the password once the site is ready. Normally I will leave the site up for 60 days. Should family members want prints they can also order direct.
