Current commentary is now posted on the above blog Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. ----Lord Acton Power kills; absolute power kills absolutely. ----This Web Site Introduction It is true that democratic freedom is an engine of national and individual wealth and prosperity. Hardly known, however, is that freedom also saves millions of lives from famine, disease, war, collective violence, and democide (genocide and mass murder). That is, the more freedom, the greater the human security and the less the violence. Conversely, the more power governments have, the more human insecurity and violence. In short: to our realization that power impoverishes we must also add that power kills. Through theoretical analysis, historical case studies, empirical data, and quantitative analyses, this web site shows that: uote Freedom is a basic human right recognized by the United Nations and international treaties, and is the heart of social justice. Freedom is an engine of economic and human development, and scientific and technological advancement. Freedom ameliorates the problem of mass poverty. Free people do not suffer from and never have had famines, and by theory, should not. Freedom is therefore a solution to hunger and famine. Free people have the least internal violence, turmoil, and political instability. Free people have virtually no government genocide and mass murder, and for good theoretical reasons. Freedom is therefore a solution to genocide and mass murder; the only practical means of making sure that "Never again!" Free people do not make war on each other, and the greater the freedom within two nations, the less violence between them. Freedom is a method of nonviolence--the most peaceful nations are those whose people are free. The purpose of this web site, then, is to make as widely available as possible the theories, work, results, and data that empirically and historically, quantitatively and qualitatively, support these conclusions about freedom. This is to invite their use, replication, and critical evaluation, and thereby to advance our knowledge of and confidence in freedom--in liberal democracy. It is to foster freedom. Pray tell, my brother, Why do dictators kill and make war? Is it for glory; for things, for beliefs, for hatred, for power? Yes, but more, because they can. IMPORTANT NOTE: Among all the democide estimates appearing on this website, some have been revised upward. I have changed that for Mao's famine, 1958-1962, from zero to 38,000,000. And thus I have had to change the overall democide for the PRC (1928-1987) from 38,702,000 to 76,702,000. Details here. I have changed my estimate for colonial democide from 870,000 to an additional 50,000,000. Details here . Thus, the new world total: old total 1900-1999 = 174,000,000.New World total = 174,000,000 + 38,000,000 (new for China) + 50,000 (new for Colonies) = 262,000,000. Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century. Cons: Eating-in means you take your to-go styrofoam container and sit at a table. I work down the street so actually come here fairly often. Its really cheap and they give you a good amount of food. I like the teriyaki plates and the bento box. I LOVE the Aloha Saimin. This consists of a bowl of incredibly rich soup, with saimin noodles, teriyaki chicken, spam, and a fresh fried egg on top. All this for under $5. The macaroni salad is to die for, btw, and I have been known to order huge party plates of it, along with party plates of shortribs, to bring to pot-lucks. The Loco Moco is for the big eaters - two huge hamburger patties over rice, with lots of gravy, fried eggs on top and mac salad on the side. Yep, its Hawaiian alright! For less than $4, you can get a teriyaki mini-plate consisting of meat, rice and macaroni salad. Oh, and the proprieters are extremely sweet. Went back this week and they have much improved. short ribs = excellent, really broiled, sticky sweet, very tasty. shrimp = very good, crispy and fresh kalua pork = okay (dry, too much salt) lau lau = okay (skimpy on the taro leaves) mac salad = good to very good kim chee = funny tasting, like they didn't ferment it enough chicken = kinda blah Haven't tried anything else. People say the saimin is good. Showing 1-3 of 3 reviews Featured Resources Additional information on Hawaiian Walk In or other products. Islands Restaurant Fine Burgers, Drinks, & More. Hawaiian Food and Luau Recipes AMERICAN FOOD ALL AMERICAN FOOD CAJUN COOKING SOUTHERN COOKING CALIFORNIA CUISINE NATIVE AMERICAN FOOD HAWAIIAN FOOD HOME COOKING INTERNATIONAL AMERICAN FOOD COOKING RECIPES LUAU HISTORY Hawaiian Food and Luau Recipes Prior to the arrival of the white man to the Hawaiian Islands, the food was similar to that found on other Polynesian islands, particularly Samoa, Tonga and Tahiti, and included native fruits and other plant life and fish. Hawaiian Food With the arrival of other cultures, Hawaiian food changed drastically, fusing together the cooking styles of cultures from all over the world. Modern island cuisine now incorporates Polynesian, Asian and European cultures, their cooking techniques, and flavors. If you've ever been to a luau, you can see the whole spectrum of foods that blend these cooking styles and cultures. Even a typical dinner in Hawaii easily draws from each of these and might consist of teriyaki chicken, steamed or fried rice, chilled bean sprout or green salad, and fresh sweet pineapple. The Hawaiian Luau The Hawaiian luau was a traditional feast where accomplishments were celebrated, people were honored, and great events were remembered. Along with the large amounts of food, people sang and danced, typically for days. One of the most important features of a luau is the imu (an underground oven—a shallow pit lined with stones). On the day of the luau, a pit is dug in the sand in the early morning. Once the pit is lined with rocks, a whole pig (and laulau— side dishes) covered in ti and banana leaves is lowered into the pit filled with hot coals and rocks. After a whole day of cooking (about 6 to 8 hours), the pig is retrieved and the luau begins. Beverages at a modern non-commercial luau are typically soft drinks, beer, fruit juices and kona coffee. For the adults, Blue Hawaiians, Mai Tais and other tropical drinks are served to further enhance the luau experience. Pupu Anyone? No luau would be complete without a pupu platter. This is basically a platter of hors d'oeuvres designed to whet the appetite for the forthcoming feast. It is the Hawaiian way to say, "He mai (welcome)!" For example, a pupu platter might contain sliced vegetables and fruit, lomi-lomi salmon cherries, lumpia, kim chee, and butterfly shrimp. Hosting Your Own Luau? You don't have to be on the Islands to share in the spirit of Aloha. All you need is a warm summer day, a yard or lanai (patio) decorated with greenery and flowers, delicious food, delightful Hawaiian music and the laughter of those around you. (By the way, don't fret if it rains…just move the party inside!)
