What kind of Maui activities would you recommend for my honeymoon on Maui? What is unique about a honeymoon on Maui? Maui, the Valley Isle, has many different honeymoon options for a romantic Maui honeymoon. There is a wide variety of wedding locations on Maui, ranging from beautiful Maui resorts to sophisticated private estates to white sand beaches. Weddings on Maui range from just the two of you, barefoot on the beach, to a five star gala at a world-class hotel. Maui is a wonderful combination of Old Hawaii and New Hawaii. There are parts of the Valley Isle that feel untouched by modern life, and other parts that bustle with the commerce and vibrancy of the Hawaii tourism industry. Maui is a great choice for wedding couples who want to offer themselves and their guests many options. If you have part of your party that loves to shop 'till you drop, you can be happy on Maui. If you have members of your wedding party that love the quiet serenity of the Hawaiian nature, you can be happy on Maui. There truly is something for everybody on this Magic Isle, consistently voted the "Best Island In The World" by Conde Naste magazine. Maui boasts some of the most spectacular resorts in Hawaii. The competition is fierce on this island, so you may be able to negotiate rates during off times. However, at some of the very discriminating properties, you will be looking at upwards of $400.00/night for your lodging. Maui wedding venue options include a hotel, a private residence, a public beach or a quaint church. Talk to one of our Maui Wedding Planners about your many options. What is a typical Maui honeymoon like? There truly is not a "typical" maui honeymoon, as the options on the island are so diverse. Honeymoon itineraries on Maui range from five star elegancy to rustic jungle cottages with solar power. Let us know about yourself and your fiancée, and we will work with you to decide upon the most ideal Maui honeymoon itinerary for your tastes and budget. Are there packages available for my Maui honeymoon that are all inclusive? Honeymoon packages on Maui are not all-inclusive in the same way many honeymoon packages are in other regions such as Tahiti or the Caribbean. However, Preview Hawaii can help you arrange a Maui honeymoon itinerary that covers all the major bases, so the only decisions you need to make after coming to Maui is where to eat dinner and what shopping to do! Go through all of the Maui honeymoon options on Preview Hawaii and call us with any questions you have about this very special once in a lifetime trip! Should I use a travel planner or plan my Maui honeymoon on my own? You are certainly capable of planning your own Maui honeymoon with extensive research and time. However, you may not have that time as you are also planning for the wedding and running your normal life. An experience travel planner in Hawaii can present you with options that are based on first hand experience of Hawaii, and the knowledge of the best possible values in every price bracket in Hawaii. Though Preview Hawaii is a very extensive resource in planning your honeymoon on Maui, we could never replace the personalized service of a honeymoon planner. How do I get to Maui? There are two airports on Maui, Kahului International Airport and Kapalua Airport. Kahului is the primary airport, with international and mainland domestic flights arriving daily. However, Kapalua is a great option if you are traveling inter-island from Oahu, and plan to stay in the Kapalua, Napili or Lahaina areas. Do I need to rent a car when I get to Maui? It is STRONGLY recommended that you rent a car on Maui! Public transportation is very limited and time consuming. How far in advance should I plan my honeymoon on Maui? Planning for a Hawaii honeymoon can be done in less than six months, but many begin planning as early as a year prior. If you need help planning your honeymoon on Maui, please call our toll free number at 866-773-8844. What time of year is best for a Maui honeymoon? The great thing about Maui is that the weather is very mild and temperate year round! There are of course weather differences on each side of the island, and within the many microclimates of Maui, but on any given day there is a warm, sunny beach on at least one side of the island! So, you really can feel comfortable planning your honeymoon on Maui any time of year. The sub-tropical weather can be unpredictable, and as we say in Hawaii, "no rain, no rainbows!" so be prepared for some changing weather. Is it common to visit more than one Hawaiian Island on my honeymoon? It is very common to visit at least two islands in Hawaii for your honeymoon in Hawaii. The islands of Hawaii are so diverse, and each is a very different experience. While Kauai is rural, slow and oriented towards the outdoors, many of the other islands are busier and more cosmopolitan. The best step in beginning to plan your honeymoon in Hawaii is calling us at 866-773-8844 (toll free on Kauai) to discuss your dream honeymoon in Hawaii. After asking you a few questions about you and your fiancée, your interests and your budget, we can put together a custom Hawaii honeymoon proposal that will based on your needs. How much is inter-island airfare in Hawaii? Are there other ways to get from island to island? Unfortunately, inter-island airfare in Hawaii has risen in price recently. The inter-island air segments are now sold only as one way tickets, and are $75.00 each at the cheapest, usually closer to $90.00 each way. Here at Preview Hawaii we are able to get more affordable rates through Hawaiian Airlines. Call us toll free at 866-773-8844 to get a quote on inter-island airfare! What kind of Maui activities would you recommend for my honeymoon on Maui? Maui is ideal for nature lovers, outdoorsmen (and women) as well as consummate shoppers and diners! Maui County includes Molokai, Lanai and Maui. Activities on Maui include helicopter tours of Maui, Maui boat trips, snorkeling adventures, Maui hiking trails, luau's and other exciting adventures on Maui. If you are unsure about which activities on Maui to participate in, please call us toll free at 866-773-8844. Firesign Theater Quick test: Name a Hawaiian music artist. If you said Don Ho , or couldn't think of one, this is the page for you. Whatever you think you know about what Hawaiian music sounds like, it's quite possible that you're wrong. If you think it all sounds alike, you're wrong for sure. I've put up a couple of internet "radio stations." Unlike most internet radio, I'll tell you the name of the artist on each song, plus there's a popup box that will show you song title and artist. (They're on Live365 , where you'll have to register if you're a new listener, and you'll have to log on each time you listen. It only takes a minute, and it's well worth doing.) If you're not very familiar with Hawaiian music, these stations are here to introduce you: Hawaiian 101; An Introduction to Hawaiian Music - It's almost two hundred of the best songs from the biggest Hawaiian albums from the lastquarter century (about 13 hours of music), just the thing to introduce you to what you've been missing in contemporary Hawaiian music. You'll hear old Hawaiian songs, pop hits, some reggae, some rock, and even a touch of Polynesian rap. This one's 56k stereo. Slack Key Paradise - All Hawaiian slack key guitar, all the time. Also, some interviews from Dancing Cat Records artists mixed in. This one's set on Shuffle, so you may hear the same artist back to back occasionally, but it's all great. 24k, so even dial-up connections should be able to get it. If you're already a Hawaiian music fan, there's lots more to hear on the web; visit my mikini mele page, the Hawaiian Music Machine, to find all the Hawaiian music on the internet that I know about. Here's some links to learn more about Hawaiian music: Stevo's Hawaiian Music Guide 1997 article (by me) in Perfect Sound Forever music magazine Ukuleles by Kawika , See the artistry that goes into the creation of a great concert ukelele (and a great web page). Download some .wav files and hear the differences. Hawaiian Music Island . To buy Hawaiian music, or learn about artists and records, visit Auntie Maria's site. She's got a special place for you to start, the Introduction Page . Search her database, listen to clips, buy at good prices. Don't forget, while you're there, check her concert calendar . Some great Hawaiian artists may be coming to your neighborhood soon. Don't miss them. And of course, I know you want to buy Hawaiian 101 logo stuff; it's here. I hope this very short introduction will help you start finding some newfavorite songs while you're listening to the most beautiful music in the world, andhelp you support the artists that make it. Cons It's not that great Hawaiian food. The Bottom Line Hawaiian food in downtown Oakland. Full Review Hawaiian Walk In 402 15th Street Oakland CA 94612 During the week - 10:30 AM - 9:00 PM weekends - 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Ever since Aloha Fest at Presidio Park this past summer, I have been fixated with plate lunches, malasadas, and SPAM. Ideally, SPAM in my plate lunch somewhere, but defnitely not in my malasada. Imagine then, how excited I was to discover that Hawaiian Walk In - a place that cooks up plate lunches - was located less than five miles from my apartment. Awooo! Then, imagine just how disappointed I was after finding out the food was just under so-so. That's just how it happened. Location It's in downtown Oakland, a stone's throw from Broadway. You really wouldn't be doing anyting in downtown Oakland unless you work there or are going to Temple Tattoo, so there aren't too many accidental walk ins at Hawaiian Walk In. There is no parking lot either, so you'll probably have to spend some time looking for metered street parking. The best time to try this place out is after work hours or on weekends. Of course, the closest BART station is City Center. The Scene It's downtown Oakland - not in the hip part - not that there is a hip part. There's one woman who is the hostess, waitress, and cashier and she'll happily hand you a pink paper photocopied menu and hang out by the cash register up front. Behind her post is a fridge, the kind you can see in, where you'll find a jumble of Hawaiian Sun juices and sodas. This place is ridiculously casual, and almost has a dive, hole-in-the-wall charm to it. Menu Lots of island-style plates at ridiculoulsy low, low prices. The food is better to talk and read about than eat. Specials include things like a Teriyaki Mixed plate (think of it was a three way plate - teri short ribs, teri chicken, and teri steak), Loco Moco (a hamburger patty and fried egg smothered in gravy atop a mound of rice), Pork Lau Lau, or a Bento lunch of Mahi Mahi, teri steak, teri chicken and ham. All Specials come with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad, just like all Hawaiian plate lunches. Specials are around $5 and each plate is plenty. The monster special, which is a ridiculous amount of food, is the Mahalo Chicken Combo - Teri chicken, Lemon chicken and Chicken katsu with rice and mac salad. It was more than enough for two starving adults. There are also "regular" plates, which include one meat choice with the same sides - other things like lemon chicken, deep fried shrimp and curry are available. ($5-$6). For lighter eaters, or if $5 is too expensive, opt for a "mini" plate wich is the same as regular, but you just get one scoop of rice instead of two. No mini plate is over $4. Need to go cheaper? Get a sandwich - teri chicken, mahi mahi or teri beef - less than $2.50. Yup. $2.50. Now you're thinking that this is plate lunch nirvana with its jumbo portions and mega low prices. Nope. The food isn't that great. The chicken breasts for every chicken item we ordered was way too fatty with mystery, chewy bits. (I've eaten here a handful of times now.) The teriyaki flavor is actually pretty good - a full sweet taste - but no amount of marinade and sauce can mask poor quality chicken. The lemon chicken is a heavy overly battered and deep fried breast - the batter is so thick and bready, kind of like corndog batter without the cornmeal, which becomes a pocket sponge for what it was deep fried in. The lemon sauce - sugary, lemony, sad. The mac salad, which for many is what makes or breaks a plate lunch, is actually pretty good. But, cannot stand for the plate lunch. They also have saimin - but I can't recommend it either way because I haven't tried it yet. ($4 with egg and chicken, $2.25 plain!) I'm such a fan of island food that I'll probably go back to try the saimin. The Verdict I was disappointed, but it doesn't mean I won't go back. I really should learn my lesson. The prices are low, and there are enough things on the menu for several visits. This place though, is better and more authentic than the new place in El Cerrito (Waikiki something.) However, if you work in downtown Oakland anyway, and are short a few bucks...
