Kaululaau was a mischievous young man, always getting in trouble, and when he accidentally destroyed an entire crop of breadfruit, his fathers punishment was to banish him to Lanai. At the time, Lanai was an unexplored island, and evil spirits were believed to reside there. But the energetic Kaululaau cleared the land and found the island to be free of such spirits. In time, people began to settle the island. Perhaps a few evil spirits did lurk around Lanai, however, because frustrated residents trying to establish an economy on the island seemed to fall under a curse. Sugarcane and cattle were just two ambitious enterprises that came and went without success. Everything changed in 1922, when James Dole arrived on Lanai and purchased the entire island. The price tag? A cool $1.1 million. Dole had the magic touch. He wanted to grow pineapple on the island, and his efforts were remarkably successful. Soon, canned pineapple from Lanai, a product that no one had even heard of beforebecame a huge hit on the mainland United States. As large plantations were built, the island became a major exporter of this sweet, fleshy fruit; in fact, at one time, tiny Lanaproduced 75 percent of the worlds pineapple! To accommodate the increasing number of workers arriving on Lanai to toil in the pineapple fields, Dole built a plantation camp in the flatlands. This is now Lanai City. For the next few decades, Lanai was widely known as Hawaiis vibrant "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were covered with pineapple. In the late 1980s, pineapples "crown" began to wither, and the industry no longer turned a profit. Now owned by Castle & Cooke Resorts, Lanai has reinvented itself as a one-of-a-kind vacation destination, with two upscale resorts and golf courses. Only about 100 acres of pineapple for local consumption remain on the island. Each summer, Lanai celebrates its unique heritage with the Pineapple Festival, a colorful event paying homage to the islands favorite fruit. If you go to hawaii, stay here!!! Overall Experience: Would Return: Yes Posted: Mon, Sep 20, 2004 User Review by: A Finlaw from Panama City Beach, FL Beautiful hotel. The rooms were nice and bright and added a touch of retro. Very cool, close to beach, lots of stuff to do and close to some good restaurants. Highly recommend. Overall Experience: Would Return: Yes Posted: Tue, Mar 16, 2004 User Review by: Jenny Forrest from Normal, Illinois We had a fabulous time during our stay at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. We enjoyed Breakfast on the Beach, and spent our nights at Tiki's. The bartenders were great! I was surprised how close the hotel is to the beach. We chose a room with a partial ocean view and it was absolutely beautiful. The view was better than we expected it to be. We would love to go back to Hawaii and stay at the hotel again. Luckily, buying a condo in Hawaii can be initiated with a search for related topics online, such as, buying property in Hawaii, or, Hawaii condominiums. Another means of getting information without leaving your present home is to go to the Web sites of the Hawaii Real Estate Commission, or the boards of real estate agents for each island. Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii (the Big Island) all have Realty associations that can provide facts and figures on Hawaii condos real estate. These professional organizations can also help with relocating concerns, finding local real estate agents, and questions about buying and selling property in Hawaii. They can enable you to select a real estate agent on their Web sites by sorting agents by name, or office, or designation. Wide Range of Condos Hawaii condos real estate is available as luxury condos in resorts, from the dramatic island of Molokai to the southern coastline of Maui. Maui has four resorts--Kapalua, Kaanapali, Wailea, Makena--that have elegant condominium developments. Upscale resort condos also can be found on the South Kohala coast of the Big Island. Condo developments, however, can be easily found on all the major islands of Hawaii. Oahu, being the most developed island, has complexes in many locations that vary in price, amenities, and facilities. Maui has less expensive condominiums near Napili, Lahaina, and Kihei, all casual beach communities with a range of accommodations for visitors and locals. Kauai has condo developments on its popular South and West Shores. Get all Hawaii Real Estate articles via v. 5.0154 © 2002 - 2006 InfoSearch Media, Inc . All Rights Reserved. Hole-in-the-Wall Tour - Hawaii Food Tours Sugoi (Local-style Bento & Plate Lunch) Photo Courtesy of Hawaii Food Tours << Previous | Next >> Hawaii is the great melting pot of the United States. Nowhere else will you find so many cultures and ethnic groups all living together. While many of the cultures have mixed and mingled over the years, each culture maintains much of its ethnic heritage in its food. The Hole-in-the-Wall Tour takes you to four of the following restaurants: Pho Nam (Vietnamese) Zaffron (Indian) Sugoi (Local-style Bento & Plate Lunch) Antonios New York Pizzeria (Pizza & Cheesecake) Liliha Bakery (for the Hawaii-Famous Coco Puff Pastry) Scattered in four separate areas of metropolitan Oahu, these restaurants show you that good food is often found in the most unlikely places and that not all good food on Oahu is found in Waikiki. It really doesn't matter if you like all of the food you sample. There will be plenty of items that you will enjoy. For example, I am not big on vegetables and much of Vietnamese cuisine is heavy on vegetables. On the other hand, I really enjoy a good plate lunch and Sugoi was the perfect spot for a great Bento box with spicy garlic chicken, beef teriyaki and hapa rice. If you've ever had pizza in Hawaii, it's usually pretty bad, but Antonio's is owned and operated by two brothers from New Haven, Connecticut who make pizza like it should be made and cheesecake and cannoli to die for, As for the Liliha Bakery.... Well, you have to taste one of their coco puffs! This tour is offered daily from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The cost is a bargain at $59 per person.
