Born in the mountains of North Carolina and raised in a log cabin, Ron became an entrepreneur at an early age. By five, he was running his own roadside stand at the foot of his family-owned mountain. He sold apples, grapes, nuts, honey, apple cider, and wreaths at Christmas to help the family. His father instilled in him the basic American values that he lives by today--honesty, fairplay, tough competition, and plenty of hard work. A firm believer in education, Ron graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science Degree and set out on a career as a teacher. This enterprising young man would still be a chemistry teacher/football coach/part-time lifeguard today, if it had not been for a trip to Hawaii. While he was there, Ron saw women on the beach using natural oils to protect their skin. Having looked in vain all his life for a product that would shield his extremely fair skin from the sun, Ron was determined to create a product that would allow him and others to achieve a tan like the native Hawaiians. With $500.00 borrowed from his father, Ron set up business in his garage. He mixed coconut, avocado, kukui and other secret natural oils in a garbage can, bottled the formula and set out to sell it. "I had an old Ford Mustang convertible that the salt air had just eaten apart. I drove to pool decks and lifeguard stands and sold my original suntan product. I was obsessed," Rice says. The new product caught on immediately--no one had ever heard of a natural tanning formula before! When it came time to hire a staff and a sales force, Rice looked to his old teaching, lifeguard and football buddies. He sent this modified super sales team to various parts of the world and built Hawaiian Tropic into the second largest suncare company in the world, today grossing over $200 million a year. Ron shares his success with the love of his life, his daughter Sterling. When the two aren't traveling, they spend most of their time at their $5.5 million oceanfront estate in Daytona Beach--the city where Hawaiian Tropic originated. In memory of his father, Ron had it built with North Carolina granite rock trucked down from the mountains to Florida. "If he gets an idea at 4:00 a.m.--he will call you!" Rice also knows how to mix hard work with fun. He travels over 250 days a year to various celebrity/charity events, Grand Prix Races (where Hawaiian Tropic sponsors several cars), Miss Hawaiian Tropic International Pageants, The Cannes Film Festival, and many, many more places promoting Hawaiian Tropic . Amazingly, all the success and fame has not gone to Ron Rice's head. "My biggest peeve is people who become successful and forget their roots," he says. "The happiest day of my life was when I was able to pay my father back the $500.00 he loaned me and thank him for believing in me." The garbage can used to mix his first batch is now silverplated and stands in Ron's living room as a reminder of Hawaiian Tropic's early days, and Ron's tireless hard work and determination. The Hawaii Constitution was framed by a Constitutional Convention underAct 334, Session Laws of Hawaii 1949. It was adopted by the people atthe election held on November 7, 1950, and was deemed amended when threepropositions submitted to the people in accordance with the Act ofCongress approved March 18, 1959, 73 Stat 4, Public Law 86-3, wereadopted by the people at the election held on June 27, 1959. As soamended, it was accepted, ratified, and confirmed by Congress by the Actof March 18, 1959. It went into effect on August 21, 1959, upon theissuance of a presidential proclamation admitting the state of Hawaiiinto the Union. The Constitution has since been amended a number of times in accordancewith proposals adopted by the legislature or by constitutionalconvention and ratified by the people. The source of these amendmentsis indicated in the source notes immediately following the text of theamended or new section. Revision Note On November 7, 1978, amendments to the Constitution proposed by theConstitutional Convention of 1978 were presented to the electorate forits approval. The Lieutenant Governor's computer report showed that allof the proposed amendments passed by the necessary constitutionalmargin. However, the Supreme Court of Hawaii in Kahalekai v. Doi, 60 H.324, 590 P.2d 543 (1979), held that a number of the proposed amendmentswere not validly ratified. The revisor has deleted from theConstitution these invalid amendments and added explanatory notes to thesections concerned. This deletion has been done under the authority ofResolution No. 29 of the 1978 Constitutional Convention authorizing therevisor "to effect such necessary rearrangement, renumbering andtechnical changes of the sections within the articles of the StateConstitution, as may be affected, for proper form and arrangement andproper order in the State Constitution in the event that any or some ofthe amendments to the State Constitution proposed by the ConstitutionalConvention of Hawaii of 1978 are not ratified by the electorate." In addition to the abovementioned amendments, removed from the text ofthe Constitution, there appear to be other proposed amendments that mayhave failed of ratification. A number of unspecified amendments,involving technical, stylistic, and incidental changes, were submittedfor approval by the electorate under Question 34. As to these, theCourt stated: The question of whether any amendment submitted for approval by QuestionNo. 34 was in fact approved ... dependents on its effect uponsubstantive law. If the amendment is purely stylistic and technical innature, and does not alter the sense, meaning or effect of any provisionof the Constitution, it was approved by the electorate and has become apart of the revised Constitution. On the other hand, if the amendmentalters the sense, meaning or effect of any provision of theConstitution, it was not ratified and is not effective to change thelanguage of the Constitution. Obviously, we are not now in a positionto make these line by line determinations. The revisor does not consider that the authority granted underResolution No. 29 embraces the elimination of proposed amendments ashaving failed of ratification where the issue has not been adjudicated. Thus the text of the Constitution includes all the proposed amendmentssubmitted for ratification under Question 34. As an aid to the readers,however, an attempt has been made to identify all suchamendments--except those obviously purely technical and stylistic andclearly nonsubstantive (which have been ratified)--and explanatory noteshave been appended thereto. Island Flavor Lindsey Cassiday and Ralen Chang have lived in Hawaii their whole lives. It's where they met and where their relationship blossomed—so it's no surprise that their wedding was a celebration of the islands' distinctive culture. The intimate, outdoor ceremony, at the home of Lindsey's parents in Diamond Head, Oahu, was performed in both English and Hawaiian by a friend, Ka'au, who acted as kahu (priest). The aisle was strewn with yellow and white plumeria, a local flower, and as a special addition to the ceremony, the couple honored their parents by presenting them with maile-leaf and ginger leis. Barefoot and Wedded The bride and groom recited their vows facing the ocean, surrounded by their wedding party. The bridesmaids wore simple sleeveless white tops with pale-blue skirts and pikake choker leis, similar to the choker Lindsey wore. The groomsmen were dressed in Hawaiian-print shirts in gray and pale blue; they wore green maile-leaf leis like Ralen around their necks. The only thing missing? Shoes—all of them were barefoot. Hula Hunks In the clear-topped reception tent, with views of the South Pacific sky, Lindsey and Ralen took their first spin on the dance floor to "Hawaiian Rainbow," by the Ho'opi'i Brothers. "We chose that song because it's all about the islands and their flowers," says Lindsey. Her favorite moment was when the wedding coordinator surprised everyone by leading the groom and groomsmen in the hukilau , a special hula. It's a Hawaiian tradition for the bride to do a hula for her groom on the wedding night, but at this wedding, the roles were reversed. "The hula was hilarious because Ralen and his groomsmen were in matching outfits," says Lindsey. "Everyone was laughing and cheering."
