Brittni Paiva's second album, "Hear..." combines both island and non-island selections. She won a Na Hoku Hanohano award as "most promising artist" for her first album, and will be in contention for "Instrumental album of the Year" for this release. Ms. Paiva (now 17), began recording 2 years ago but has had a fascination with Ukulele, Bass & Slack Key guitar for many years. She plays all three instruments on this album. (using multi-tracking). You'll love her interpretations of the island classics, Akaka Falls & Opihi Moemoe. Brittni wrote several tunes on the album and finishes with her first vocal. She sings "E Lohea Mai" (which means "hear...") in both Hawaiian and Hebrew. The album just touches the surface of this young lady's talent. If the name sounds familiar, it is because she appeared on Fox TVs American Idol. While on the top-rated Fox show, the Hawaii-born Trias joined Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo to finish in the top 3. Although it has taken Jasmine a while to get her songs and arrangements together, IT WAS CERTAINLY WORTH THE WAIT! Ray's voice, on this, his second album, is mellow and strong. Shawn is heard on backup vocals, and a wide-variety of instruments. After reading some negative reviews and newspaper articles about the ship, I was a little reluctant to book this cruise. This was our first voyage with NCL, and it will certainly not be the last. First of all, the ship is absolutely gorgeous. It's very new, but the designers chose to model if after the classic luxury liners of days gone by. Stunning. The pictures of it that I`ve seen on the Internet do not do it justice at all. Second, "Freestyle Cruising" is awesome. Not only can you eat when and where you please, but a table for two was easily accommodated every time we asked for one. The specialty restaurants are especially worth visiting. I will admit however that the room service menu is very limited. One of the other things we enjoyed about this cruise was that the room attendant was not in our face every time we were in our cabin (which by the way was lovely.) She was attentive, but respected our privacy more than our experiences with other cruise lines. As far as the crew is concerned, I would cautiously admit that some of them seem to enjoy their jobs more than others. However the latter was hardly the norm. This young, friendly, (sometimes sassy) American crew treated us better than any cruise we have been on, and we`ve been on a lot. I don`t think there was a single time we walked past a crew member who didn`t offer a genuine smile and say hello to us. It`s very clear that these folks are working hard to make this all come together, and it came together pretty darn well for us. Unfortunately we did witness a few passengers being extremely rude to crew members for the stupidest reasons. In those instances, the crew handled the situation very professionally. I really can`t say enough about my respect for these nice folks. Our cruise began 9/17/2005. As far as the bottom line goes, we have already booked another cruise on this beautiful ship in 6 months. Gardening--Fun and Frugal! by: Cyndi Roberts Whether you are an avid vegetable gardener, a beginning herb gardener or just like to have a pretty yard, these frugal tips may help you save a little money! 1. Stale coffee and coffee grounds make great organic fertilizer. They provide many trace minerals and low, gentle levels of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. 2. Remember that a good soaking of water less often is better than a light sprinkling every day -- for veggies and for your lawn. 3. If your neighbor has a plant you particularly like, ask for a cutting, instead of going to the nursery and buying one. Maybe you could trade a cutting from one of your own plants. 4. To easily water a tomato plant, bury a bottomless coffee can next to the plant and pour the water into the can. This allows the water to go straight to the roots. 5. Plant marigolds in your vegetable garden. They will attract insects that eat aphids and other pests. 6. My husband bought some used carpet at a garage sale, cut it into wide strips and laid it down between the rows in our garden. Now we can pick peas with getting our shoes muddy. 7. Use grass clippings as mulch around your vegetable plants to keep moisture in and weeds out. Just don't use the clippings right after you have fertilized your grass or treated for weed control. 8. If you have access to them, pine needles make excellent mulch. 9. A natural, frugal garden pest spray: mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Use 3 tablespoons of this mixture to 1 quart of water and spray on plants. 10. In the herb garden, to keep plants like mint from taking over too big an area, put it in a clay pot and simply plant the whole pot! "He who plants a garden, plants happiness."
