Goemetry and Quilts Lesson Quilt Blocks: Geometry with a Cultural Warmth Subjects :Geometry, Social Sciences, Clothing and Textiles, Art Patty Winkler Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions Houston, TX email address: pwinkler@houstonisd.org All rights reserved. Any use of these materials is prohibited without the expressed written permission of the author. Overview This lesson can be taught at any grade level but is recommended for middle or high school. It is meant to be a fun lesson to generate interest in geometrical patterns and the world around us. Objectives Develop an appreciation of geometry as a means of describing the physical world Recognize and appreciate the geometric patterns found in quilts Describe the symmetry and other geometric aspects of quilt block patterns Create scale drawing of life objects. Discuss the history and cultural influence of some of the quilt blocks found Find and view information from the WWW Materials Needed squares of paper or cloth for Hawaiian quilts (see procedures for details)quad rule graph papercolored pencils, markers or crayonsresource materials listed below Procedures Quilting is a wonderful pastime which has lost its luster and interest in todays generations. Quilting has many wonderful traditions which can be explored in may different ways. I have outlined some ideas below and included just a few of the cultural resources I have found. Try to find a guest speaker to discuss quilting and some of the new and old patterns. Hawaiian quilting: Hawaiian quilting differs from that which evolved in other parts of the world. Its unique method of design leaves a striking impression on anyone who has the opportunity to view a finished product. The actual emergence of this style of quilting is pure speculation, as to date, no information has been found to substantiate any one theory. A set of instructions and steps for making a quilt are included with the lesson. Take some time to read the Introduction to gain a better understanding of the emergence of this type of quilting. After the history has been discussed, have the students create a design of their own by following the steps for folding and creating the design. If square are not available in the suggested 16 and 20 size, use 6 and 8.5 squares. Once they have created a design in one color from a 6 square have them choose another color to paste it on. Once they have created their quilt block have them fake the echo stitching by lightly demonstrating the technique in pencil throughout their block. Once all blocks are completed by the students, put them together on a bulletin board or tape their backs together to create your own Hawaiian quilt. Have students discuss how they got the design they had and if they were using anything from their life or nature to create the design. Early American/European patchwork quilting This type of quilting involves cutting pieces of cloth in specific shapes and sizes to create a desired pattern. There are hundreds of patchwork patterns and variations with new ones being developed regularly. I have included the initial page from an Internet site on Amish quilts. The Amish are famous for their quilting techniques. The midwestern Amish do more intricate patchwork designs where the Pennsylvania Amish have very simple patchwork with very intricate and detailed quilting lines. The quilts with the detailed stitching are desired worldwide and can be very expensive. Students should do some research on patchwork quilting. There are a number of sites on the Internet as well as a numerous magazines and books available on the market. Once they have seen some of the patterns which are already in existence, show them the two that are included here. One is called Kaleidoscope and the other is called Fractal. They can see a very direct relationship to mathematics through these quilts. They are both brand new designs. African American quilting The influence of the African textile techniques and practices are evident in the quilts with this distinct style. African style quilting shows two major influences. First is the African preference for strip textiles and strips of cloth developed on hand looms. Second are the religious symbols of their cultures. These both appear in many of the quilts of African-American quilting. Some of the most famous quilt designs include: Lazy Gal; Spider Leg; Twin Sisters; Spider Web; and Wild Goose Chase. Whether consisting of a single piece or many small scraps of cloth, strips are a dominant design element as well as a chief construction technique in both West African textiles and Afro-American quilts. I have included a copy of the article African Symbolism in Afro-American Quilts from African Arts magazine. The reference is included in the reference list at the end of this group of lessons. Once the students have had a chance to explore patchwork quilting, have them use graph paper to design (in scale) and color their own patchwork quilt. Quad rule graph paper works best here. Have them share these designs either in small groups or by placing them on a bulletin board or empty wall. Evaluation The creation of the designs discussed above. Resource Materials Quilting in America Paint a Quilt Lesson Quilt Gallery Quilts - One of my favorite things Immigration Quilt Project Hawaiian Quilting materials Aloha Quilts Helen Friend-Hawaiian Quilter Amish Quilting Materials Homepage for American Quilts Amish Art African-American quilting article General quilting information Yahoo search - Quilting Teacher Comments Growing up in a small, rural, farming community gave me a deep appreciation for the art and craft of quilting. I am not very skillful, unlike my sister and my aunts; however, I do see and understand the geometry involved in designing an appealing quilt. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of quilt block designs all around the world. Each of them was created by someone who wanted to tell a story, make a point, or stir an emotion. This is an art that is dying and needs to be rekindled in the younger generations. You can go there only by airplane or boat. There are six major islands : Oahu, Maui, The Big Island of Hawaii, Kauai, Molokai and Lanai. Each island is unique and may feature live volcanoes, lava flows, tropical rain forests, beautiful beaches, sugar cane fields, pineapple plantations or historic sites. These tropical paradises attract about 7 million tourists each year, but most visitors only see one or two of the islands. You can easily travel between the islands by using one of the two domestic airlines: Aloha or Hawaiian. Flights are frequent and inexpensive. When landing at each airport, be sure to look for the racks of free coupon magazines. Each island has its own coupon book with lots of discounts. Oahu Coast Hawaii has a wonderful climate The climate is consistent and enjoyable. Temperatures seldom fall below 65 degrees or rise above 80 throughout the year. A pleasant breeze frequently cools the day. Don't forget your sunscreen, or sunblock! In such pleasant conditions, you can easily forget that the tropical sun causes severe sunburn to anyone not accustomed to it. Rainfall varies by location but can be an almost daily occurrence in the rain forests. The Aloha Spirit is prevalent everywhere Visitors are warmly welcomed and quickly enveloped by the "Aloha" spirit of Hawaii. Life is very informal on the islands and the dress is casual. Take lots of casual warm weather clothing and don't forget your swimwear! Men visiting the islands usually buy and wear "Aloha shirts" made of bright colorful fabrics. Women usually buy colorful muumuus (loose fitting comfortable dresses that can be worn anywhere in Hawaii). Go Hawaii Card: Unlimited Admission at over 25 Oahu Attractions and Tours PLUS! You can swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, sail, fish, golf or just see the sights. The famous Hawaiian surf is among the biggest and best in the world. Remember these two rules when surfing in Hawaii: 1. Never turn your back on the ocean! 2. If the natives are not in the water, stay out! When picking which islands to visit, consider the type of activities you enjoy. Some islands provide lots of nightlife and lots of sports or recreational opportunities. Others offer spectacular scenery or quiet beaches and solitude. Polynesian Hula Dancers Accommodations on the islands include plenty of hotels and motels in various price ranges. If you stay longer than a few days, there are also lots of condominiums and apartments for rent. Car rentals are readily available and are the best way to see all of the spectacular scenery on most of the islands. When visiting Oahu, long-term car rentals are not a good choice as parking is very limited in Honolulu. Tour busses and daily car rentals are much better options on Oahu. Hawaii has a strict quarantine Hawaii enforces a strict quarantine inspection upon arrival. You will not be allowed to take any fresh fruit, flowers, plants and certain meats into the state. I have always loved seeing how happy couples are to receive beautiful Hawaii wedding photographs and video. I know most couples who plan a Hawaii wedding would like to have an excellent chance to get a Romantic Sunset Photograph at the end of their Hawaii wedding. Sadly most locations won't have a sunset and most photographers don't know how to capture it on film correctly even if it did happen. New - There are many couples who come to Hawaii who think that the weather in Hawaii is always nice. Many advertisements offer a sunset wedding package even though the sunset is on the opposite side of the island. This is quite common on Kauai and Oahu. People just don't ask enough questions. Hawaii also gets rain all the time. I worked on Kauai for six years and have seen it rain on far too many weddings. The sunsets are almost never visible.Nearly 50% of Kauai weddings get rain. Hanalei gets so much rain you could have a very wet vacation. It can be very nice but you never know. Maui's free locations are usually very small and crowded. The last two times I was on Maui it rained in Wailea and Lahina. I have seen as many as 14 couples show up at the same beach for a wedding.Oahu is fun and has good shopping, I don't consider it a romantic place. Many couples sit in traffic on their wedding day. I know the best sunset wedding location in Hawaii - and it's free. The sunsets are the best in Hawaii all year. It's like a machine - almost every night. Up at Waikoloa, just 25 miles from Kailua Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii, the rainfall is about 6 inches a year. Very little rain and excellent hotels and activities. What a great combination . Other locations on Hawaii Island aren't nearly as nice. I know several of the very best Licensed Ministersin Hawaii and we are offering an unbeatable wedding package. You also can arrange for more flowers, champagne, music, cake etc. if you want. You can customize your ceremony or leave it us - I'll even do a Keep sake edited Wedding Video along with my Forty Print Photography Package (2 still camera shoot - negatives available at $45.00) .You can spend the money you save having fun together on your Hawaii Honeymoon. Plus you will have beautiful wedding photographs and video by Kris. No deposit is required if you are using one of the Licensed Ministers on my list. Just pay the $150.00 ministers fee to reserve your date. The ministers fee is usually sent direct after you make your selection. I like the fact that nearly every couple is in contact with their Licensed Minister / Wedding Officiate.I will hold your date on my wedding calendar if we have the minister booked. Note that $150.00 is deducted from the package price when the ministers fee is paid. Come back and view my site often. I have 1,000's of new photo's to publish. I will also include photo's of some very poor locations. Watch for new photo's at Hapuna, Holoholokai and Harbor Beaches. Also many more at A-Bay. We also have purchased another very expensive computer and more cameras recently. We can now do DVD whenever required. We produce photo CD's several times every week. The most important thing by far is fun professional photography, using the best film, cameras and processing. I have everything covered including the video. Weddings are so much fun in Hawaii - it's the best for wedding photography and ceremonies by the sea. The best location for weddings in Hawaii is here in Waikoloa. No one who wants great Photo's likes rain. Here in Waikoloa you have less than 2% chance of rain and 95% chance of a great sunset. We charge less than many other photographers who don't have the equipment or experience that I do. Within the last month, I spent $8,000 for two new still camera systems complementing my already number one system developed over 12 years for Hawaii Weddings. A very cool 3 chip Digital Sony captures your ceremony by the sea. Nikon, Sony and digital = a great Hawaii wedding - you won't be disapointed. I am shooting more digital - just like Pro Wedding Photographers all over America. To read the latest about digital wedding photography you can read the same stuff I do every week at: DigitalPhotographers.net One method that works for me is to have 3 cameras. One pro color film, one digital and one backup. This is a slow move to digital. Pro film is still nice with bright highlights - like sunset. Digital images are made availabe on your free web site. I am not substituting to save money on film, it's just that digital is so nice. Actually I am spending lots of money because of the additional cameras, flash and memory cards. Also digital creates endless hours on the computer, but I feel it's worth it now - with the new cameras available. I am always striving to be the very best I can. The prints from digital are made on the same pro photo paper at our lab - made to last 100 years. Digital has arrived and it requires photographers to be computer geeks. I have been editing digital video for years already. Another really great feature about having everything on CD is my ability to edit in some of the best images from the photo shoot when making wedding DVD's - really impressive. Recently we had some bad weather pass by Hawaii. The clouds turned really nice colors after sunset - very very low light and after sunset. With the digital camera I was ready to capture the moment. The scene lasted less than TWO MINUTES. The flexability of digital allowed me dial in the equivelent of ASA 800 film to capture another very special photograph for them - along with the pro film - it's an added benefit that doesn't take away from what I've been doing for many years. This flexability (changing film speed in 10 seconds) is really wonderful. The other benefits of having everything on CD things like cropping and simple retouching at no charge. Also I can make an unlimited number of images. This is great for Photo Journalism style combined with the traditional. Also, if we have everything on CD, magazine style wedding album pages are possible in PhotoShop CS - really cool. Digital cannot be ignored and we are already a digital studio (video).Digital Video is way more complex than Digital Stills. Mention (email me) that you read this and I'll make a free automated website with photographs from your wedding. Available in 1 day. This is nice for family to see your wedding pictures on the net. Usually I email the password once the site is ready. Normally I will leave the site up for 60 days. Should family members want prints they can also order direct. Standard prints including simple retouching and custom cropping are just $10.00 + S/H. I can also host your wedding video on the web - ask for a quote. Video takes much longer to do for the web. |
