But this lovely and pictureque city is full of life and brimming with history! Day or night, Lahaina is a site not to be missed. Lahaina started as an ancient Hawaiian fishing village. Then westerners and their tall ships began sailing to the islands and Lahaina became a popular town due to it's natural harbor. Several of the buildings and much of the history of the area revolves around those early years of the 1800's Directions: Take Highway 30 west from Ma'alaea. Around Mile Marker #20 you can take any street going toward the sea to get to Lahaina. Front Street runs the length of the city along the ocean. The cultural mix in Hawaii is amazing. The Hawaiians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Filipinos, Thai and the Koreans all have made valuable contributions to Hawaii's multicultural society. And because we have this Asian and Polynesian blend, Hawaii has become a "gathering place" for chefs to practice their craft. The festive culinary possibilities are endless. But, nobody can argue, home-cooked meals are the best. Most people would have to agree that their favorite foods are the ones that mom and dad would make for them at home. Cons: Eating-in means you take your to-go styrofoam container and sit at a table. I work down the street so actually come here fairly often. Its really cheap and they give you a good amount of food. I like the teriyaki plates and the bento box. I LOVE the Aloha Saimin. This consists of a bowl of incredibly rich soup, with saimin noodles, teriyaki chicken, spam, and a fresh fried egg on top. All this for under $5. The macaroni salad is to die for, btw, and I have been known to order huge party plates of it, along with party plates of shortribs, to bring to pot-lucks. The Loco Moco is for the big eaters - two huge hamburger patties over rice, with lots of gravy, fried eggs on top and mac salad on the side. Yep, its Hawaiian alright! For less than $4, you can get a teriyaki mini-plate consisting of meat, rice and macaroni salad. Oh, and the proprieters are extremely sweet. Went back this week and they have much improved. short ribs = excellent, really broiled, sticky sweet, very tasty. shrimp = very good, crispy and fresh kalua pork = okay (dry, too much salt) lau lau = okay (skimpy on the taro leaves) mac salad = good to very good kim chee = funny tasting, like they didn't ferment it enough chicken = kinda blah Haven't tried anything else.
