And I did, sorta. Eventually. I got my new fabric all washed and ready and started cutting. Unfortunately, I musta been half asleep at the time, because I cut it wrong and had to go back to the fabric store yet again! Sheesh! Fabric 6, Mokihana O. However, the next day I was much more successful, and got my applique piece all properly cut out - Mokihana 1, Fabric 6. The following day I cut out my background piece - Mokihana 2, Fabric 6 (I’m catching up!). I carefully unfolded my green ulu applique piece and voila! There it was, waiting for me to baste it onto the background fabric. I think I should get a point for that. K’den. Mokihana 3 - Fabric 6. Then, the next day of quiet basting with my friend, I got the whole pattern basted onto the background! Pau! Mokihana 4, Fabric 6. Now I am ready to start appliqueing the pattern to the background. And I fully expect to have my score keep climbing! This is turning out to be a very rewarding project for me. I feel very spiritually connected to it, feeling a real connection to Hawaiian women years and years before me designing and quilting their own works of art. I couldn’t make it out to The Gathering this week. I was buried with work and a very large truck with a cherry picker and shredder attached to it was parked in my long, narrow driveway while a crew from Portland General Electric trimmed branches from the firs, maples, alders and willows away from the power lines. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t get out; it would have been a lovely day. However, there is next week. And I have a quilt square ready to be appliqued. The colors are just what I wanted and I feel so good about starting this. It is a song to me, and I am loving the singing of it. But this lovely and pictureque city is full of life and brimming with history! Day or night, Lahaina is a site not to be missed. Lahaina started as an ancient Hawaiian fishing village. Then westerners and their tall ships began sailing to the islands and Lahaina became a popular town due to it's natural harbor. Several of the buildings and much of the history of the area revolves around those early years of the 1800's Directions: Take Highway 30 west from Ma'alaea. Around Mile Marker #20 you can take any street going toward the sea to get to Lahaina. Front Street runs the length of the city along the ocean. Useful Information: Numerous natural and historical sites located in town Restaurants, shops and lodging throughout the area Limited parking on the street. Several pay, public parking lots in town Lahaina Harbor has a ferry boat that goes to the neighbor island of Lanai, 7 miles across the channel. For such a small area--38 miles long and 10 miles wide--this island has many unique features. It has the longest white-sand beach in Hawaii at Papohaku Beach. It has the world's highest sea cliffs at 2,600 feet on the North Shore. It has Hawaii's only barrier reef that protects the east and south sides of the island. These are only the most obvious highlights. Molokai has only one main road, no traffic lights, a top speed limit of 45, and no building taller than a palm tree! On the west end, the Kaluakoi Resort at Kepuhi Beach offers several complexes of condos and villas on the shore, as well as, a golf course set among the palms. On the southern part of the east end are the Wavecrest Resort and Molokai Shores, both of which have Maui oceanfront condos. Contact the Molokai Chamber of Commerce, the Molokai Visitors Association, or Maui real estate agents for more information about Molokai real estate. Beach Communities with Condos On the island of Maui itself, several beach communities have more of a mix of people from all walks of life than do the resorts at Kapalua, Kaanapali, Wailea, and Makena. These communities house the locals who live and work on West and South Maui. The lodging and accommodations are also an eclectic mix of older homes and newer condo developments. The Napili/Kahana/Honokowai area is a more affordable stretch offering Maui oceanfront condos between the very expensive and exclusive properties at Kapalua and Kaanapali. Lahaina, south of Kaanapali, was once the capital of Hawaii and a whaling center. It still is lively, and has a typical beach town's colorful nightlife. Kihei, on South Maui, is also a bustling, eclectic town that has more affordable lodging, as well as, Maui oceanfront condos.
