The women quiltedwhile seated on lauhala mats under the shade of a large tree. Asthe legend goes, a shadow cast on the fabric was that of a large leaf fromthe breadfruit tree (ulu). The Hawaiian women agreed quilting wouldbe more enjoyable if they could use a pattern which resembled somethingwhich was part of their daily lives, such as the ulu. From that timeon images from nature have been the inspiration for the design of Hawaiianquilts. NEW Hawaiian Redwork Floral Designs Vol 2 Along with their Hawaiian-style appliqué quilts and western-style pieced-work quilts, Hawaiian quilters also made outline-embroidered quilts. Usually made for everyday use, the embroidered quilts were known as redwork quilts for red embroidery thread. These redwork quilts were made in Hawaii between 1880 and 1925. Inspiration came from flowers and other plant material.
