Marga's Foodblog: Restaurant Reviews + Wikiwiki Hawaiian -- Marga's Foodblog recipes - reviews - rants « Ono Hawaiian BBQ | Main | Got a lot of books » October 10, 2005 Restaurant Reviews + Wikiwiki Hawaiian Even though I've been eating out quite a bit lately, I've been very remiss about writing about the restaurants I've visited. Of course, you could argue that there is absolutely no reason why I should be writing about the restaurants in the first place, but as long as I do it, I figure I should be comprehensive. I'm particularly interested on being comprehensive about San Leandro restaurants, as there aren't really good resources out there on the San Leandro restaurant scene (and given how poor it is, no wonder). The problem comes when I go to a restaurant I don't particularly like and then I forget to write the review. After a while, i feel compell to go back and write it, and yet I don't want to go back and waste money in subpar food. But if I don't, my guide will never be comprehensive. This has happened with Buffet Fortuna - a horrible Chinese buffet located near the downtown Safeway, with Bancheros, an institution serving Chef-Boyardee tasting Italian food in Hayward and with a couple of burger joints. It also happened with Wikiwiki Hawaiian BBQ on East 14th, near Bayfair mall, which I visited last June. Wikiwiki is one of the many Hawaiian BBQ joints that have sprouted in San Leandro in the last year. As I've written before, I've found most of them to be underwhelming, and while Wikiwiki wasn't the worst, it certainly does not merit another visit. As in the other restaurants, I found the chicken to have a strange consistency, very dense, almost canned-like. I can only speculate as to what gives chicken that horrible consistency at Hawaiian BBQ places. One theory is that the high salt & sugar content of the marinade dries out the meat making it denser. Anothe perhaps more likely one, is that the places use "chicken filets", scraps of chicken that are manually pressed and glued together into the desired shape. The taste was OK, nothing special but certainly edible. I also ordered the lau lau pork, pork wrapped in taro leaves and steamed. The pork was covered with a shredded green substance that might have been the taro leaves, but more likely was seaweed. It certainly imparted a very fishy taste to the pork, which I found quite unpleasant, but others might like. I can't imagine going there again. I visited Wikiwiki and thought that the food was same if not better than the other ones that i have eaten at. And about the Lau Lau, i believe that it consists of pork, butterfish, and taro leaves. I loved it, so i think that only local/or people who knows what it is able to judge and enjoy this hawaiian dish. Thanks..just my thoughts. Gabby is commonly referred to as the best slack key guitar player of all time. When you put on thisclassic CD from 1972, you will quickly understand why. Unlike other sites that review CD's, ourreviews tend to focus on CD's that everyone should have as part of their collection. Gabby certainly falls into this category. In fact, I believe that most Hawaiians willagree with me when I say every Gabby CD (including this one) is a classic and you will wantto pick up several. Gabby is more commonly known as the Brown Album . Its hard for me to say that itis my favorite Gabby Pahinui CD, because I love all the Gabby CD's and albums that I own.However, the Brown Album and the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol 1 certainlyrank as 2 of my most listened to CD's. The Brown Album contains many of Gabby's most recognized mele's. One of Gabby'smost popular songs is Hi'ilawe . This CD starts with an early rendition of this song recorded by Gabby in 1947 and ends with a version recorded in 1972. The 1947 versionwas Gabby's first recording at age 26. Hi'ilawe has to be one of most cherished Hawaiian mele's of all time. It picks me up whenever I hearthe incredible guitar strumming. Gabby's voice seems to capture the spirit of Hawaii. Even today when I hear Gabby's son, Cyril, play thismele I get chills. Cyril sounds a lot like his Dad. Wow, I am already on my forth paragraph and I have only described one song. You can see Ihave a real passion for Gabby's music. Some of the other classics on this CD include Luau Hula , He'eia , Lei Nani , and Ka Moa'e and several others that were recorded withthe legendary 'Atta' Isaacs and 'Joe Gang' Kapahu. You'll love the conversations between themat the end of Ka Moa'e . Gabby's sons Cyril, Bla, Philip, and Martin are also featuredon the CD. All share the incredible music talent of their father and have many recordings of theirown that are wonderful. One thing that you will quickly notice when you put on this CD is how it lifts your spirits.Gabby Pahinui slack key is spirited and fun. How our rating system works 5 Coconuts - These CD's are must have CD's that every Hawaiian Musicfan should have in their collection. They are classics that you will play over and over for years. The quality of the music is excellent. 4 Coconuts - These CD's are highly recommended. Although they are not necessarily classics, most Hawaiian Music Fans will really enjoy them. 3 Coconuts - These are CD's that some people will love, but others will not care for as much. Overall, though, they contain good quality music and are a nice addition to your collection. 2 Coconuts - These are good CD's, but won't appeal to everyone. 1 Coconut - These CD's would only appeal to a small percentage of people...like the artist's auntie ;-) Because a large percentage of our e-mail are requests for CD recommendations,our reviews will typically focus on CD's ranked 4 and 5 coconuts, with a few 3 coconut CD's sprinkled in.
