Coming Soon Aqua BAMBOO HOTEL, Waikiki The Aqua Bamboo Hotel is recently renovated from the former Marc Hotel . The address is 2425 Kuhio Ave ., local telephone 808-922-7777 . The Bamboo's lobby [with large plasma screen TV] and pool area are very lovely, and in our room there are a lot of great features, including custom designed furniture, crown moldings, quality carpet, glass brick shower stall, a double sink curved vanity, slatted wood bathroom ceiling. With an "official" summer rate of $145 for the VERY spacious room [ significantly cheaper on the internet ], it includes a kitchenette without a microwave, a sitting area with TV, sofa and desk, a separate bedroom that is behind a louvered wood shutter wall, three sliding glass doors for great ventilation, a lanai, and the room is located high enough above the street not to be too noisy. The problems here were just cosmetic, but I filled out an opinion form my third day, and the problems were fixed, so high marks go to the Bamboo for quick response. The rooms are a very good value, tastefully decorated in a kind of Metropolitan Home magazine sort of modern Asian theme, and for my needs [computer, photo equipment, paperwork, my need to cook], just about perfect. Many people wonder if they'll "need" to rent a car on Oahu. Even though TheBus circles the island for a ridiculously low fare, you won't have access to all the side roads and back roads along the way. The cost of renting a car is so low, especially considering all the money you've already spent to get here, it makes no sense to not rent a car for at least a day. That's why we call our guides Driving & Discovering Hawaii books! Our Circle Island Driving Map shows you those places and features that we feel should not be missed if you only have one day to explore... although there are actually many more choices than what we have included here. These others can be found in great detail, with explicit driving instructions, In our Driving & Discovering Hawaii: OAHU guidebook. Once the home of a thriving pineapple plantation, Lanai has reinvented itself as an alluring resort destination offering world-class golf courses and award-winning accommodations . In ancient times, Lanai was thought to be overrun with evil spirits. A young man named Kaululaau, the son of a Maui chief, was exiled to Lanai to explore the island and deem it free of such spirits to make Lanai suitable for settling. A major chapter in Lanais history was penned in 1922, when an enterprising businessman named James Dole purchased the island for $1.1 million. Dole started growing pineapple on his island, and soon canned pineapplea new concept at the timebecame a smash hit on the mainland. In time, tiny Lanai developed into the worlds largest exporter of this succulent fruit. At one point, the island was producing 75 percent of the worlds pineapple. For decades, Lanai was celebrated as Hawaiis flourishing "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were dedicated to pineapple, and people came from far and wide to work the fields. In the late 1980s, as the pineapple industry began to wane, Lanai turned to tourism. Two luxury resorts were built: the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel . Also added were a pair of championship golf courses: the Experience at Koele and the Challenge at Manele (designed by Ted Robinson and Jack Nicklaus, respectively). Besides golf, Lanai offers many things to do and see. Go for a swim at picturesque Hulopoe Beach. Snorkel the islands cliff-lined west coast. Explore the Garden of the Gods , an intriguing rock formation reminiscent of a lunar landscape. Hunt for treasures or examine historic petroglyphs at Shipwreck Beach . Admire local artwork at the Lanai Arts & Culture Center, a prominent showcase for community arts. You can even "lock and load" at Lanai Pine Sporting Clays , the only resort sporting clays course in the state. The kalua pig was too watery for me and lacked enough of the smokey taste I was expecting. I also ordered the Curry beef and I guess I missed the point because I thought it would be a beef curry stew. Instead it was the kalbi shortrib meat (boneless) in a dark curry sauce. Does Zippys serve things like this or is it a Lukoki invention? Oh well. We did try Onos in Half Moon Bay. Really excellant kalua pig and nice size portion. He worked at genetech for like 15-20 years, and now wants to start a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant in Tanferan Shopping Mall. Pretty crazy, but his wife is behind him (and allowing him to do it). Dunno when theyre opening yet, but I hear sometime early in 2006. Ill have to check it out and let ya know how it is.
