Volcano Watch [ TEXT ONLY ] Volcano Watch Volcano Watch is a weekly newsletter written by the scientists at the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It is published in the Hawaii Tribune-Herald's Sunday newspaper and the West Hawai'i Today's Monday newspaper, and posted here the following Monday or Tuesday. While primarily addressed to the residents of the Big Island of Hawai`i, some articles may have a broader scope. Article topics may range from volcanic features on the Big Island, volcanic hazards, informational topics of Long Valley, Montserrat, or Alaska, to topics about the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Latest Issue: January 19, 2006: Revolution in thinking about Kilauea's explosions comes to HVO: Part 1 Previous Issue: January 12, 2005: 2005: Another relatively quiet year for Hawaiian earthquakes Kilauea Eruption Status From Volcano Watch, January 19, 2006: During the past week, the number of earthquakes located beneath Kilauea remains at levels typical of the current eruption. Inflation of the summit continues. Eruptive activity at Pu`u `O`o also continues. On clear nights, glow is visible from several vents within the crater and on the southwest side of the cone. Lava is still flowing through the PKK lava tube from its source on the flank of Pu`u `O`o to the ocean, with scattered surface flows breaking out of the tube. Surface flows on the pali are visible at night (weather permitting) from the end of Chain of Craters Road. As of January 19, lava is entering the ocean at East Lae`apuki, in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. The active lava bench continues to regrow following the major collapse of November 28. Access to the ocean entry and the surrounding area remains closed, due to significant hazards. If you visit the eruption site, check with the rangers for current updates, and remember to carry lots of water when venturing out onto the flow field. There were two earthquakes beneath Hawai`i Island reported felt within the past week. A magnitude-3.6 earthquake occurred at 11:04 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, and was located 7 km (5 miles) southeast of Hualalai summit at a depth of 28 km (17 miles). A magnitude-4.7 earthquake occurred at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, and was located 16 km (10 miles) offshore and east of Na`alehu at a depth of 40 km (25 miles). Mauna Loa is not erupting. During the past week, the count of earthquakes located beneath the volcano remains at low levels. Inflation continues, but at a slower rate since early October 2005. It was originally named Laeahi by the ancient Hawaiians. The name meant "brow of the tuna" and looking at the silhouette of the crater from Waikiki, you can see the resemblance. The current name came was given to the crater by British sailors in the 1800's. When they first saw the crater at a great distance, the calcite crystals in the lava rock appeared to glimmer in the sunlight. The sailors mistakenly thought there must be diamonds in the soil. Diamond Head is a crater that has been extinct for 150,000 years. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit. When the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898, harbor defense became a main responsibility. One of the major defense forts, Fort Ruger, occupied the Diamond Head Crater. A battery of canons was located within the crater providing complete concealment and protection from invading enemies. An observation deck was constructed at the summit in 1910 to provide target sighting and a four level underground complex was built within the walls of the crater as a command post. A 580-foot tunnel was dug through the crater wall to provide easier access to the Fort. The observation deck and underground complex is now abandoned with the advent of radar but evidence of the command post is still present along Diamond Head Trail. The trail is paved almost the entire way but can be steep in spots. There are two sets of stairs, one with 99 steps and the other, 76 steps. There is also a 225-foot unlit tunnel. The hike is classified as easy to moderate in exertion but is certainly worth the breathtaking, unparalleled view of the entire west side of the island, from Waikiki to Koki Head. Award-Winning Pulehu Beef Tenderloin & Opae Marinated Beef tenderloin and Shrimp, grilled over an open flame with a Chipotle Aioli, cilantro pesto and Asian sweet soy sauce. Prepared by Executive Chef Thomas Muromoto 2005 Taste of Lahaina "Best of Show Award" winner. ( Click here for more details ) Six Servings Beef Marinade & dressing 1/4 cup Sweet Soy Sauce 3 Tbsp Soy Sauce, low sodium 1 tsp Fish Sauce 3 Tbsp Water 1 tsp Garlic, Chopped 1 tsp Ginger, peeled chopped 2 Tbsp Green Onions, Chopped 1/4 cup Basil, Chopped 2 Tbsp Cilantro w/ stems chopped 1 Tbsp Sambal olek 1/4cup Sweet Chili Sauce Black pepper, grd to taste 1 cup Salad Oil 4 Beef tenderloin steaks Steps 1) Combine all ingredients and mix well. 2) Reserve 3 tablespoons for topping of entree, Use remainder to marinate beef. 3) Place beef tenderloin or other meats in marinade. Let sit for 4 hours. 4) Place on broiler and cook to desired doneness. Cilantro, Garlic Pesto Shrimp Marinade 1/4 cup Cilantro w/stems chopped 16 Cloves Garlic, cloves roasted 1/8 cup Green onions, chopped 1/4 cup Parsley, leaves only, chop 1 cup Olive blend oil Salt to taste 8 pcs Shrimp, 16/20 ct Steps 1) In blender combine all ingredients blend together well. 2) Season with a little salt. 3) Reserve 3 tablespoons for topping of entree. 4) Use remainder of pesto to marinate shrimp for 2-4 hours. 5) Grill to order. Chipotle Aioli 1 each Egg, yolk 1 tsp Garlic, chopped 2 tsp Chipotle chili's 2 each Lime juice, fresh 4 Tbsp Honey 3 Tbsp Water 1 cup Olive blend Salt to taste Steps 1) In blender combine all ingredients except oil. Blend together well. 2) While blending slowly add oil till all is blended. 3) Season with a little salt. Variations: Use above sauces & marinates with other meats & seafood.
