Hawaii Volcano, Mauna Loa Volcano, Kilauea Volcano, Volcano House Hotel, Home > Destinations > North America > United States > Hawaii > Big Island > Halema Uma U Crater Halema Uma U Crater Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the state's premier natural attraction, containing tow of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The park extends for 377 miles from the 13,777-foot summit of Mauna Loa down to the Pacific, where Kilaluea, the youngest of the volcanic mountains, has since 1983 been pushing into the ocean from a vent, creating new land. Compared to more active volcanoes around the Pacific Rim and in other areas, Hawaii's volcanoes are fairly benign, so you can pass eruptions and lava flows in relative safety. No matter where you look, you'll see volcano views from a range of perspectives. Much of the park is preserved as wilderness, but it does provide 150 miles of trails, two visitor centers, and two scenic drives with a wealth of volcano views An 11-mile drive, called Crater Rim, passes by many rising steam vents. The Chain of Craters Road, a 46-mile round trip journey, goes by historic pit craters and heads down toward the ocean. Along the way you can see lava flowing like molasses. Three days has been suggested as a good time frame for exploring the park if you're not taking extensive hikes that eat up more time. Among the top hikes is the trail to Halemaumau Crater, emitting steam and sulfur. It's a moderate 3 1/2-mile hike and goes down 500 feet to the floor of Halemaumau Crater. You can also get a view and walk into a lava flow on a 10-minute walk from Crater Rim Drive. The Volcano House Hotel and Restaurant and the Kilauea Visitors Center and Park Headquarters are where you'll learn a great deal about the park and where you can get permits for overnight camping. They're all just inside the park's gate. There's no way to predict exactly what you'll see at the park. With luck, you'll view streaming rivers of red lava and you might see fountains of lava shooting hundreds of feet into the air. Or, the volcanoes could be completely still and silent. Kubota WAILUKU Lanai Water Co. has decided against fluoridating the island's drinking water supply, despite encouragement otherwise from state health officials. Company President Vince Bagoyo said the residents do not support fluoridation. "It's always been our decision that the residents should make that decision, and for Lanai there's no fluoridation," said Bagoyo, also vice president of Castle & Cooke. Bagoyo said last August that the company supported the project based on a community meeting on Lanai, where citizens and health professionals listed fluoridation as a priority. But since then the proposal to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water has been under attack by some groups and individuals in Maui County. They say fluoridation has been associated with illnesses such as osteoporosis and cancer, and if people want to add fluoride to their diet, they should do it as individuals. The decision by Lanai Water Co. comes when the Maui County Council is considering a bill that would ban fluoridation in private water systems. Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson said she introduced the measure to give the people a choice in what they want in their water. Johnson said there is evidence that fluoride in the diet may increase the risk of medical complications for children, the elderly and those with cardiovascular, kidney and other chronic disorders. She said she is also worried about the health effect of excessive fluoridation in children. "I always err on the side of caution," she said. "I think people should have the right to choose what they want in their water. ... We should not be forcing it upon individuals." Several Maui residents testified in favor of the bill. But Dr. Mark Greer, chief of the state Dental Health Division, said fluoridation is taking place in virtually all major cities and that there was nothing to prove claims that it causes health problems. "We've heard all the claims against fluoridation," he said. "There is nothing to substantiate a downside in fluoridation." Greer, who had planned to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water by this spring, said the division still believes it is a good idea and wants to continue talks with the community. State health officials say statistics for school year 1999 showed Lanai had the highest rate of tooth decay in children ages 5 to 9 among the Hawaiian Islands and more than three times the rate of children on Hawaii military bases where there has been fluoridation since the 1950s. Greer said fluoridation would be good for Lanai. "This is what it's about: reducing disease and reducing the cost of health care," he said. Johnson's bill, along with a resolution asking the Maui Board of Water Supply to prohibit fluoridation, has been referred to the Council's Public Works and Transportation Committee. The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why.
