L&L Hawaiian Barbecue posted by Jonah on 11.28.05 Categories: Lunch , South Bay I tried a new spot for lunch today, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in El Segundo. I hadn’t tried L&L before, but I do like Ono Hawaiian BBQ and figured that it was worth a shot. L&L serves standard plate lunches, meat, rice and macaroni salad. I was having a bit of a hard time deciding on what to get, I usually just go for the BBQ chicken plate at Ono, but there were some other appetizing options with the short ribs and even some of the pork dishes looking tasty. Fortunately, a friend walked in while I was still deliberating and let me know that L&L is known for their Chicken Katsu. Chicken Katsu it is then. The El Segundo L&L doesn’t have much seating, just a bar against the wall and then a waiting area with a large counter. I grabbed a bar stool and waited for my fried chicken goodness while listening to the Hawaiian tunes blaring from the speakers. It did take a little while for my order, but I was ok with it when I figured out that my chicken had been fried to order. The chicken was cooked really well and sliced into traditional strips, I opted to pick them up and dip them in the Katsu sauce instead of pouring the sauce on top. The sauce was good, but not great, a bit light on flavor. Next time I will give the Katsu Curry a try and see if there is more of zing to it. The portion size was HUGE. I opted for the regular order instead of the mini order, but next time I’m sure that I will go for the smaller size. I could barely finish half of my plate and I’m not one to save fried chicken. BBQ chicken yes, but not the fried stuff, it gets too soggy after a few hours. Back to the chicken though, I was really impressed with how well it was cooked. The cutlet was pounded flat and lightly breaded with panko. It was cooked all the way through, but still very juicy. I have had much lower quality fried chicken (picatta, parmesean, etc) for three or even four times the price. L&L’s menu claims that they were awarded Hawaii’s Best Chicken Katsu and I’m inclined to believe them. One thing I try to evaluate when eating around LAX is if the place would be good for airplane food. With the sorry state of airplane food these days, bringing your own has become essential. I wouldn’t recommend the Katsu to go, but I imagine that the Musubi would be a good snak for the flight. Finger food with some carbs and protein to carry you over. There are L&L franchises spread out all over Southern California, you can find your local one here: L&L Locations It’s not gourmet, but it’s not supposed to be. Hawaiian plate lunches are the working man’s meal and this working man left there stuffed without much of a dent in my wallet. L&L Hawaiian Barbecue 954 N. Main Street El Segundo, Ca 90245 (310) 414-9523 If you like this post, make it del.icio.us furl , spurl , blinklist , simpy -- 6 comments so far Yeah, L&L’s are popping up all over the place now. From what I’ve seen, each one has a slightly different menu. The other thing is…you can get much better “local” food (that’s how people from Hawaii refer to their local cuisine) at places like Shaka’s on Garfield near I-10 in Monterey Park, Aloha Kitchen on Atlantic Bl. in Monterey Park, The Loft in Gardena, Kings Hawaiian (both the restaurant on Sepulveda and the take-out place on Western). IMHO, Ono Hawaiian Barbeque is horrible. Their kalua pork is way too salty and has no smoke flavor at all. All the other dishes I’ve tried there are definitely sub-par as well. Shaka’s is the one I go to the most. They even bring in their lau-lau daily from Hawaii. And they authentic Hawaiian Shave (not shaved) ice…with Azuki beans, too (the whole beans not the sweet red bean paste [kintoki} that they used to have). By G. Matsuda on 11.28.05 5:23 pm I have heard that the Loft is the place to go, I’ll have to shoot over there and give it a try. I have heard pretty mixed things about King’s though. Here’s a mixed review from Rate A Restaurant By Jonah on 11.28.05 5:27 pm Kings isn’t the best, but it’s definitely better than Ono Hawaiian Barbeque, and some of the L&L outlets. By G. Matsuda on 11.28.05 8:26 pm I like L&L’s chicken teri plate. King’s is good for desserts… chocolate dobash and hawaiian paradise cakes. Haven’t been to Bruddah’s in a long time, but used to go there for some good kalua pork and lau lau. I wonder if it’s still good…. heard it’s gone down hill over the past few years. By Kristy on 11.28.05 10:02 pm Jonah, i think the reason why these meals were made so big in hawaii was b/c of the working class. When the Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Hawaiians worked on the sugar plantations, they’d congregate at night markets and trade their own food. Koreans introduced kalbi ribs. Japanese brought chicken katsu. etc. They’d bring their food for lunch, and save the rest for dinner. By Dylan on 11.29.05 1:48 am There’s no question about the effect of the plantation economy had on how the workers prepared their food/ate. It happened in the sugar cane and pineapple industries in Hawaii. By G.Matsuda on 11.29.05 12:32 pm RSS feed for comments on this post. Upon visiting the Koele lodge, I knew I had to come back someday. I went back 15 years later (last March) and got engaged there. The people of Lanai have not changed at all, they are friendliest people in all of Hawaii, embodying the essence of aloha. At the time of reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion. I told them of my planned engagement. The manager of the hotel made sure that a bottle of champage and chocolate covered strawberries (all complementary) were set up in our amazing room after coming back from proposing. The room was beautiful, overlooking the lake and golf course. The hotel and its property are phenomenal- championship golf course, putting green, shooting range, croquet, shuttle to Manele bay (beach) and downtown, biking, and much more. On top of this, you have a staff who accomodate your every desire and are always pleasant. I cannot say enough about how great the service is. Everyone was amazing. We weren't able to go on a honeymoon yet, but this engagement trip would cerrtainly be hard to top. The lodge at Koele is unlike any other Hawaii hotel, in that it is situated inland and has a rustic, "hunting-lodge" type feel. It is very serene and peaceful. My wife and I are looking forward to staying at the Koele lodge again. If you are looking to be close to the beach or be in a beach resort type setting, you should stay a its sister property the Manele Bay. We not only fell in love with the Lodge, but most absolutely with Lanai as well. The Lodge is the perfect base of operations to explore and experience magnificent Lanai. Where do I start? The shuttle to Manele Bay makes it easy to partake in any activities on the water - we went sea kayaking, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, etc - those activities were through Trilogy - whose staff was very polite and efficient. The shuttle ride between the two hotels is about 20 minutes. We also golfed at the lodge, played mini golf on the "executive putting course" and went horse back riding - all excellent. Reading reviews on this site had me greatly intimidated about food costs - luckily I did not book a meal plan at the lodge. I would strongly reccomend that you get out into Lanai city and enjoy some of the local restaurants. It is a nice walk into town, or you can catch the hotel shuttle into town. We ate at Pele's Other Garden, the Blue Ginger Cafe and Henry Clay's. All were excellent. The Blue Ginger was the least informal and also the cheapest. Our dinner for two at Pele's was $70 to give you an idea of prices. At the Lodge our informal dining room dinner tab was $90. Eating in town saved us some money, gave us greater variety in food and really let us interact with some local culture. The food at the Lodge while very good, was not excellent - I caution foodies that over an extended stay they may feel something is lacking (especially in selection). But let's remember, this is an island with just 3,000 people on it. Lastly, I also strongly reccomend renting a jeep and driving to some of the more secluded spots on the island - Polihua Beach is gorgeous. After an extended 4x4 required drive we found ourselves on a miles long beach with Humback whales frolicking off shore and one other car parked in the distance. The same was true of Shipwreck beach, where we snorkeled with about a dozen green sea turtles in the protected cove along shore. Lanai is quite simply a secluded gem - I will be back and I rarely consider repeating destinations. Traveler rating: Lanai City: The Lodge at Koele : "Highly recommend the Lodge at Koele" Nov 4, 2003 : A TripAdvisor Member, Madison, Wisconsin Compare prices with: My husband and I spent 3 days at The Lodge at Koele after a week on the north shore of Kauai. We have been to the other large Hawaiian islands, and decided to try Lanai for something different. Unlike the other Hawaiian resorts we have stayed at, this one was not on the beach and was not "glitzy." Instead, it is warm and sophisticated, something like an English country estate. We were greeted with leis, warm washcloths, and fresh pineapple juice. Our room was lovely and quiet. "Quiet" seems to describe The Lodge best; lots of wicker chairs on long porches for relaxing reading, tea in the "great room" every afternoon, and a quiet swimming pool. The grounds are large and beautifully landscaped; bring lots of film! We had not rented a car because we planned on using the free shuttle between Manele Bay, Lanai, and The Lodge. The shuttle was fine for this, but we decided we'd like a car for one day to see more of the island. (At $140/day for a Jeep, one day was enough!) However, there were none available, so I'd recommend reserving one for a day before you go. We also had trouble with our luggage. No problem getting to Lanai from Kauai, but our luggage didn't show up at home until 24 hours after we did. The airline said it had never been put on the plane in Lanai. Friends looking at my pictures ask if we were the only ones staying at The Lodge, because there aren't any other people in the pictures! We did take most of them early in the morning, but even so, don't expect crowds; this is a place for solitude and relaxation. But it's nice that you can also golf, snorkel, play putt-putt golf, lawn bowl, hike, or mingle with the natives in Lanai. But if you want to eat, bring your charge cards, because food at The Lodge, Manele Bay, and the Hotel Lanai is expensive. The only other choices are small local spots in Lanai. I would definitely return to The Lodge, but would stay 4-5 days and bring lots of good books! I wish I'd had more time to sit on the porch or by the pool! The hotel is completely different then anything else you will experience in Hawaii. The room was clean and large and the staff was excellent. No coffee makers in the rooms but the hotel provides better coffee down in a centrally located area. The hotel is so quiet that oftentimes you feel you are the only one there so it is no big deal to throw on a robe in the morning, get your coffee and enjoy it back on your private patio while listening to the birds in the morning. The property at Koele is lush and the hotel has many activities that customers can take part in. My husband and I are golfers and we think Koele is one of the best courses we have ever played. They have an executive 18-hole putting course that is fun to use even if you don't play golf. Koele is even better because they are affiliated with The Manele Bay Hotel so if you need some beach action there is a free shuttle that takes you back and forth between the two hotels. The Spa at Manele Bay will let you use one of their lockers in the spa if you need to store clothes there for the day but be aware they charge you for it. Be careful when you leave the airport. You travel on a small airplane and even though our two golf bags and two large suitcases made it over, when we were departing we were told we had too much luggage and we had to leave our clubs. It took 24 hours for our clubs to reach us in Kona which kind of messed up the tee times we had there. Bring plenty of money because meals are pricey! You can eat dinner one night in Lanai City but do not expect much, this is a very small island. I highly recommend the Lodge at Koele to anyone who wants privacy, 5-star service and accomendations.
