Molokai - A guide to the most hawaiian island - Photo Tour 5 Kamakou & the Backside Geologists tell us that, at one time, there was a much gentler slope to the terrain on the north shore of Molokai. Here we call it "The Backside." The precipitous cliffs evident today resulted from a landslide of enormous proportions. Evidently the continuously pounding surf on this shore, over a gazillion years, undercut the land until one day, Splash! Huge pieces of the island fell off into the Pacific, leaving behind the world's highest sea cliffs which have been beautifully sculpted over the millennia by rain, wind and waves. At the highest point, the pali (cliffs in Hawaiian) is 2,600' (793m) from top to sea level. The photo above shows a small part of the pali looking west toward Kalawao on the Makanalua peninsula. Notice the triangle shaped moku (island) at the right center. That same moku is at the left center of this photo looking east from Kalawao on the peninsula. Historians claim that, in ancient times, most of the valleys along the north shore were well populated. Today, however, only a few accept the challenges and difficulties inherent in making this part of Molokai their year-round home. Outside supplies can only be brought in by boat, during the summer, when the ocean is calm or on foot over the mountain from the south side of the island. Near the top of the eastern Molokai mountain, is the 2,774 acre (1123ha) Kamakou Preserve. Here you will find more than 250 species of Hawaiian plants, at least 219 of which can be found nowhere else in the world, plus a variety of extremely rare Hawaiian birds. From the preserve, the grandeur of the north shore valleys can be appreciated as they stretch toward to the Pacific. In 1982, Molokai Ranch granted a conservation easement to The Nature Conservancy to restore the area and protect it. Access to Kamakou Preserve is available through monthly, guided hikes. Advance reservations with The Nature Conservancy office on Moloka`i are required. While the boardwalks of Atlantic City or Santa Cruz may be wider and more famous, the Kamakou boardwalk is certainly unique. It snakes through the rain forest and offers fortunate hikers a glimpse of Mother Nature's handiwork that can only be found on Molokai. Every trip to the back side offers a new look at this spectacular area. While the pali and mountain are the same, time of day, season, surf and weather conditions combine to create new panoramas. As if it were a different island, here, sea spray and early morning light create a breathtaking, almost surreal vista. Kalaupapa is on the north shore of Moloka'i, 2000 feet Sea cliffs that stretch to almost 4,000 feet, the kept the Kalaupapa residents from escaping this cruel and barren place. Then Father Damien arrived in Kalaupapa, Moloka'i from The Big Island of Hawaii, where he helped the people of Kalaupapa, get the respect they deserved. Kalaupapa grew to support the patients was formed by a central crater now full of water and its bottom is known to be a least 800 feet. While this area is generally referred to as Kalaupapa, it is in fact, Makanalua Peninsula which is divided into three districts: The Kalawao district on the eastern edge; Kalaupapa and the settlement of Kalaupapa to the west; with Makanalua in the center. Kalaupapa's reputation as a leprosy colony is well-known throughout the world. Hansen's disease, the proper term for leprosy, is believed to have originated in China and spread to Hawaii. The first documented case of leprosy in Hawaii occurred in 1848. Its rapid spread and unknown cure precipitated the urgent need for complete and total isolation. Surrounded on three sides by the Pacific ocean and cut off from the rest of Moloka'i by 1700-foot fortress like sea cliffs. The area was void of all amenities. No buildings, shelters nor potable water were available. The first arrivals dwelled in rock enclosures, caves, and in the most rudimentary shacks built of sticks and dried leaves. In 1873, when Father Damien entered the settlement of Molokai at age 33, he made a decision to set aside his fear of contagion. He embraced the lepers, cleaned and bandaged their wounds, and the Hawaiians knew his concern and love for them was unprecedented. Father Damien was the only one to bring the leprosy patients the succor they so greatly needed. He not only administered the consolations of religion, but also rendered them with as much medical and bodily comforts that were within his power. He dressed their ulcers, helped them erect their dwellings, dug their graves, and made their coffins. In December 1884, Father Damien noticed severe blisters on his feet without the presence of pain. After twelve years of service (1885), he discovered that he had symptoms of the disease. Nevertheless, he continued with his work. As death approached, the disease invaded his windpipe and progressed to such an extent that he could only sleep but for a few hours. His voice was reduced to a whisper. Leprosy was in his throat, lungs, stomach, and intestines. As the end drew near, he made his confessions to his own Congregation on March 30, 1889 and two weeks later, on April 15,1889, Father Damien died. It was Holy Week. Some weeks before, D,mien had said that the Lord wanted him to spend Easter in heaven. With the advent of sulfone drugs in the 1940s, the disease was put in remission and the sufferers are no longer so called contagious (we have since found out that Leprosy was never contagious). The fewer than 40 former patients remaining on the peninsula are free to travel or relocate elsewhere, but most have chosen to remain where they have lived for so long. The bigger, the better. Wherever you go in the islands, theres bound to be a festival taking place, with all types of food , entertainment, games and more. Some festivals are big, some are small, but each one offers generous servings of warm aloha spirit. The largest festival happens each June on the island of Oahu . Taste of Honolulu, is a three-day event that showcases food samplings from more than 25 of the islands top restaurants. In addition to the great food, theres live musical entertainment, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, a beer garden and family exhibits. Theres a nominal admission charge, and food is sold by scrip. A similar benefit takes place on Maui each September. A Taste of Lahaina , a two-day event at Lahaina Recreation Park, offers savory samplings from more than 25 Maui restaurantsfrom mahimahi over jasmine rice to spaghetti and meatballs. The event benefits several youth groups on the island, including schools and athletic organizations. The resort area of Wailea has its own food event. Part of the Maui Film Festival, the Taste of Wailea features Wailea s top chefs preparing mouthwatering portions of their signature dishes (which are, naturally, accompanied by some of the worlds finest wines). Each summer, food and wine aficionados from all over the country head to Kapalua on Maui for the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival . Regarded as Hawaiis most prestigious and longest running food and wine extravaganza, this four-day event features exclusive wine tasting seminars, cooking demonstrations by internationally acclaimed chefs and a fantastic selection of the worlds premier wines. On the Big Island , the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival takes place each November. The 10-day festival includes more than 30 community events, including coffee tastings, art exhibits, recipe contests and more. These are just a few of the festivals that highlight Hawaiis special events calendar. Be sure to check ahead and see whats coming up during your Hawaiian stay!
