Hawaii is known worldwide as a tropical paradise, with its gorgeous warm weather, its lush greenery, and its miles of pristine beaches. There’s plenty of opportunity for fun in the sun: renters can look forward to sailing, golfing, fishing, snorkeling…the list goes on! One of the best parts of a Hawaii vacation is experiencing the unique personality of each island. Big Island, or Hawaii proper, is home to the stunning Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kauai, the “garden isle”, is less developed and more peaceful than its sister isles. On Oahu, visitors can find some of the world’s premiere surfing sites, as well as the modern city of Honolulu. Molokai. Here we call

Molokai - A guide to the most hawaiian island - Photo Tour 5 Kamakou & the Backside Geologists tell us that, at one time, there was a much gentler slope to the terrain on the north shore of Molokai. Here we call it "The Backside." The precipitous cliffs evident today resulted from a landslide of enormous proportions. Evidently the continuously pounding surf on this shore, over a gazillion years, undercut the land until one day, Splash! Huge pieces of the island fell off into the Pacific, leaving behind the world's highest sea cliffs which have been beautifully sculpted over the millennia by rain, wind and waves. At the highest point, the pali (cliffs in Hawaiian) is 2,600' (793m) from top to sea level. The photo above shows a small part of the pali looking west toward Kalawao on the Makanalua peninsula. Notice the triangle shaped moku (island) at the right center. That same moku is at the left center of this photo looking east from Kalawao on the peninsula. Historians claim that, in ancient times, most of the valleys along the north shore were well populated. Today, however, only a few accept the challenges and difficulties inherent in making this part of Molokai their year-round home. Outside supplies can only be brought in by boat, during the summer, when the ocean is calm or on foot over the mountain from the south side of the island. Near the top of the eastern Molokai mountain, is the 2,774 acre (1123ha) Kamakou Preserve. Here you will find more than 250 species of Hawaiian plants, at least 219 of which can be found nowhere else in the world, plus a variety of extremely rare Hawaiian birds. From the preserve, the grandeur of the north shore valleys can be appreciated as they stretch toward to the Pacific. In 1982, Molokai Ranch granted a conservation easement to The Nature Conservancy to restore the area and protect it. Access to Kamakou Preserve is available through monthly, guided hikes. Advance reservations with The Nature Conservancy office on Moloka`i are required. While the boardwalks of Atlantic City or Santa Cruz may be wider and more famous, the Kamakou boardwalk is certainly unique. It snakes through the rain forest and offers fortunate hikers a glimpse of Mother Nature's handiwork that can only be found on Molokai. Every trip to the back side offers a new look at this spectacular area. While the pali and mountain are the same, time of day, season, surf and weather conditions combine to create new panoramas. As if it were a different island, here, sea spray and early morning light create a breathtaking, almost surreal vista. It's the most energized town on the island, and you can feel it from the first moment you walk down Front St. The main attractions of Lahaina are within a few blocks of each other. All along Front St., the main drag, and on the side streets are innumerable restaurants, shops and hideaways where you can browse or recoup your energy. Some of the more interesting sites are the Banyan Tree in the main plaza, the Courthouse, the Baldwin Home, and the Carthaginian II. Ka'anapali with its 4 miles of glorious beach, is Maui's westernmost point. It begins where Lahaina ends and continues north along Rte. 30 until it runs into the village of Honokowai. Ka'anapali is Maui's resort coast with 500 acres of fun and relaxation. There are 6 luxury hotels, a handful of beautifully appointed condominium properties, a shopping mall and museum, 36 holes of world-class golf, many tennis courts, and a multitude of restaurants. Matthew Gray - Chef, Food Critic, Expert Guide Matthew Gray and Keira Nagai of Hawaii Food Tours Photos Courtesy of Hawaii Food Tours << Previous | Next >> The concept seems pretty simple. Matthew and Keira know Oahu's best places to eat, so they can start a business to take people to handpicked restaurants. They'll charge for the service and make a nice profit. Wrong. If that were all that Matthew and Keira could offer the business would have failed in short order. Well, it's not all that they offer. First off Matthew and Keira are just plain fun to spend time with. You could spend hours just talking with them about Hawaii, food, restaurants and Matthew's amazing background. Before he was the top food critic on Oahu, he worked as a professional chef. In fact, Matthew was a personal chef to many Hollywood celebrities in the 80’s & 90’s. He launched a successful food business, Chef Matthew’s Fine Foods, and sold his products to gourmet shops and grocers all over California. Matthew's other business, Pamper & Dine, combining "massage and fine dining in your home," was profiled worldwide in People Magazine, National Enquirer, the New York Times, and CNN, NBC and CBS television networks. You get to do this with other people who are also looking to learn more about places to eat on Oahu. On the day of my Hole-in-the-Wall Tour, there was an older couple from Texas and three adult Hawaiians who had grown up in California but who return to the islands every so often to visit family. We all came from different backgrounds and different parts of the U.S., yet we all found out just how quickly people become friends over some good food.
