You will not have a problem finding quality snorkel gear (mask, snorkel and fins) to rent or buy on Maui. Locals warn against trying to save a few bucks…it’s not worth it. You don’t want to go to Kmart or Wal-Mart for your gear, unless you want to be frustrated with the performance. The last thing you need is your mask filling with water, or pinching your face while you are trying to experience the serenity and beauty of Maui sea life…it kind of throws a wrench in the whole thing, you know? Get yourself down to a dive shop. I recommend The Maui Dive Shop (phone: 808-879-3388) or Captain Nemo’s (phone: 808-891-0500). They both have a few locations around the island for your convenience. The crew members at these shops are not only knowledgeable, but friendly and helpful. They will help to custom fit you with gear that you should have no problems with during your stay. Back To Top | Download PDF Version DANGER IN THE DEEP! Okay, so you don’t want to think about the spooky stuff, or that there can be any harm done in a little snorkeling. We understand…but hear us out. There are many snorkel hot spots that are a little “secluded”, and while these are fantastic and magical areas, please realize that seclusion is not always a good thing. Always take a buddy with you, make sure your cell phone has reception in the area, and don’t leave your common sense on the plane. Nicole at the Maui Dive Shop recommends that if people are going to be doing snorkeling on their own (unguided) that they only snorkel at Maui beaches that have a lifeguard on duty. She wants to remind people that while dive shop crews are knowledgeable, they usually don’t know the specifics for all of the beaches on a given day—conditions change and the crew has been in the SHOP all day. A lifeguard on the other hand knows the condition of his or her beach and can give you the lowdown. As a side note: Fish, like women, are attracted to shiny things…to reduce your odds of getting assaulted in the water by little nibblers or…uh…BIG biters, take your jewelry off before entering the water. “R-E-S-P-E-C-T…find out what it means to me” You’re going to hear a lot about “respecting the aina (land)” during your stay. This respect should be carried over to the ocean. If you’re going to remove things from the water, it’s best to return them. Back To Top | Download PDF Version Maui Snorkeling Picks: WEST MAUI Black Rock (The Sheraton): Black Rock is a fun beach in general. Good swimming, great lounging, fantastic snorkeling. There is a huge lava outcropping that is loaded with coral. It’s also a fun place to do a little “cliff” jumping (off of the lava outcropping). If you are on Hwy 30 in Kaanapali, turn toward the ocean onto Kaanapali Parkway. There is free beach access parking, but it’s usually full. I think it’s easiest to just park at the Whalers Village shopping center. It is paid parking, but you can always go into the mall and buy a bottle of water and get your ticket validated. Kahekili Beach Park (Airport Beach): The nice thing about Airport beach is that there are a lot of facilities—parking, showers, change rooms, restrooms, picnic areas, BBQ’s. The water is generally very calm and there is a lot of reef where you can see some great coral…where there is coral, there is fish…so you’re good to go. To get there from Hwy 30, turn onto Puukoili Rd. It is just north of mile marker 25 Kapalua Bay: The experts say that the best snorkeling at Kapalua Bay is on the North side of the beach (that would be to your right if you’re facing the ocean). It’s also a nice beach to hang out at. The currents outside of the bay can get very strong and dangerous so it is highly recommended that you keep your snorkeling inside the bay. On Hwy 30 you’ll see the Napili Plaza. Turn toward the ocean on Napilihau St. Then turn right at Lower Honoapililani Rd. Drive about a mile to the Napili Kai Beach Club. Turn toward the ocean when you see the shoreline access sign. Honolua Bay: Okay, so it’s more of a surf spot…but when the water is calm, and the surfers are bummed, it’s an absolutely fabulous place to snorkel. There are real nice coral formations and your chances of spotting turtles (honu) are excellent. It may not be the best snorkel spot if it has been rainy for the past few days—run-off really ruins the visibility here. Back To Top | Download PDF Version SOUTH MAUI Kamaole Beach Parks I, II & III: These beach parks are great places to spend the day—lots of grass to picnic on, facilities galore and great weather just about 365 days of the year. Snorkeling can be fun, although sometimes the waves and undertow at these beaches can be big and strong. Nicole at the Maui Dive Shop says that they often recommend these beaches to snorkelers because there is a lifeguard on duty for ocean info and safety. If you’re heading south down South Kihei Rd, the beach parks will be directly to your right. You can’t miss them. If you’ve hit the Kihei Boat Ramp, you’ve gone too far. La Perouse: This is Maui snorkeling at its finest. On a non-windy day you will be sure to see lots of fish and turtles. Want to swim with the dolphins? If you head out early enough, there is a pod of dolphins that cruise the area almost every morning. It’s a magical place with a sacred feel to it. Just make sure you take a friend with you as there are no lifeguards. Also, make sure your cell phone works in the surrounding area so that you can call for help in case of an emergency. This place is a little off the beaten path. South of Wailea, past Makena, past the Ahihi marine reserve. You know your there because you’ll hit the end of the road….literally…and don’t even think about off-roading in that rental car. Back To Top | Download PDF Version MOLOKINI CRATER I never quite understood what the big deal about Molokini crater was until I actually went out there. It was then that I realized that it wasn’t over-rated (like I had assumed) but is truly awesome. Molokini is a crescent shaped crater that looks like a little island. If you’ve been in South Maui or Upcountry you’ve seen it… Anyway, you won’t get out there unless you go through one of the many tour companies. The only drawback is that there tends to be as many people out as there are fish. Waikiki beach is the most famous of all the Hawaii beaches. It is almost perfect in every way - long days of endless sun, fine golden sand, excellent surfing and body surfing, a long stretch of shallow sandy bottom lagoon ideal for swimmers, both inexperienced and experienced, protected areas with no waves and exposed areas with frolicking waves, lots of water activities from catamaran cruises, hobby cat sailing, paddle boats and snorkelling trips and most of all, lots of people, lots of high rise hotels with fantastic views, lots of restaurants and good nightlife. Waikiki Beach is located on the sheltered south coast of Oahu a few miles to the east of downtown Honolulu. Waikiki stretches for almost four miles in an almost unbroken stretch of soft white sand and has over a hundred high rise hotels to choose from and lots of smaller inns and units for rent but only a few of these are absolute beachfront. Waikiki beach stretches for over 2 miles and has several different facets. The eastern side of Waikiki is dominated by the protruding cement pier known as "The Slippery Wall" where surfers and body surfers show their grit by surfing right up to the pier, and sometimes making it clear over the wall. The wall is a man made structure to help protect sand erosion and the beach here is officially called Kuhio Beach. This saltwater swimming pool breaks the surf and allows for calm swimming in any conditions making it ideal for families with small children. A little further east of the pier, away from Waikiki, is Kapiolani Park with its lovely walkways through trees and picnic tables. The beach here is much quieter if you want to get away from the crowds and the swimming good. The wall stops near the flower-adorned statue of Duke Kahanamoku Statue, the reveered royal surfer of the early 1900's. The statue marks the spot where surf lessons are given on the beach and boards of all sizes are rented. The surf at this point is the most popular along Waikiki Beach and whilst the surf is never dangerous, stray surf boards and racing outrigger canoes have caused many accidents. Although the surf at Waikiki is not the most challenging on the island, it is certainly the most reliable. Winter surf is moderate whereas the raging winter surf on the north shore is for experienced surfers only. And when the surf on the north shore goes completely flat in summer, the surf at Waikiki remains good. Waikiki was where the Hawaiian royalty would come to during summer for their surfing and relaxing. Up to this point, the beach is open to the shore front and main road, but to the west of here, hotels claim the beach front and the main road is forced inland from the beach. However, public access to all beaches is allowed and even the grand resorts do not object to passers-by walking through their properties. Several catamarans and racing outrigger canoes are available for rides around the Waikiki surf at this point. The beach gets progressively narrower until just beyond the famous original Waikiki Hotel, the Pink Royal (now Sheraton) where high tide comes right up to the seawall. The beach then opens up again and is officially called the Fort DeRussy Beach and reaches its widest point near the crescent shaped bay holding back Ala Wai Harbour. Here the sea is usually dead calm and great for swimming with sandy bottom and shallow water. Casual water activities are also popular. Beyond Ala Wai Harbour is the equally attractive setting of Ala Moana Beach Park with its paved pathways, cove beach, joggers and fishermen and views of Downtown Honolulu but a stone throw away. Although Waikiki has almost all Oahu's accommodation, there are lots of other lovely beaches around Oahu which can be explored by car. Our room was more than adequate with coffee maker, refrigerator, clothes iron, security safe, lanai, big shower. We shopped before booking and figured we saved over $60 per day and got more amenities. Our standard garden view still had an ocean view without paying the upgrade, plus received the 5th night for free. The Kama'aina Terrace restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet, worth the $13.95. We only ate one dinner here, Fridays prime rib-seafood dinner buffet. At $34.95 it was only so-so. Most regular dinner prices run $18 to $35. Bar drinks run $8.00, do your own in-room. I can recommend lunch at the Kalanikai Grill. Good burgers or fish and chips at $8.00 in an ocean side setting. There is a mall within a mile of here that has fast food and grocery stores. Buy your pop, booze, and munchies and eat in room. Look around for other dining options. Tennis courts, swimming pool, and exercise room available. Next door to the resort is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Go to Snorkel Bobs on Alii Dr. to rent your gear for $9.00/week. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone. However, our room (#645) was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. Carpeting should be clean so that I can walk comfortably barefooted. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked one day and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. Maid service was poor two times: Left used glasses on the table and left used towels in the bathroom floor, yet they took the other used towels. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sunset and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. Nightly entertainment was quite enjoyable. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Also, Kahaluu beach, next to the hotel, is the BEST place for snorkeling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, Moorish idols, triggerfish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi! An internet cafe is there too. Overall we did enjoy our stay, but again, would like to see the place upgraded. Maybe there are other rooms that are refurbished. Ask before you book. One last thought: We spent five nights there. I think the next time we will book a condo like we did when we visited Kauai. This way we could have a kitchen to cook our breakfast and have a more comfortable place to stay. We stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort for 5 days in October. It is such a beautiful hotel in such a fabulous location. We had an Ocean View room which overlooked the beach, pool and on towards Kona Bay. The staff and service was wonderful. The hotel is begining to show its age but is still well maintained and very clean. On our last night there, the A/C went out on us. My friend when down to the front desk to report the problem and the maintenence man beat him back to the room. The problem was taken care of in about 30 minutes. Because we stayed 5 nights, we were intitled to the Breakfast Buffet and it's fabulous. They had every fruit you could want and then some. Eggs fixed several different ways, french toast and pancakes or waffles. Bacon and sausage as well as hash browns and potatoes fixed in some other ways. Each day there was several different things added in to make it interesting. For lunch, we were usually off sightseeing and ate wherever we were. Do to the high cost of food at most hotels, we found some wonderful places near the hotel. There is a Wendy's just up the hill. Just beyond that, there is a lovely mall that has Drysdales II, a fun restaurant with a neverending menu. We ate there twice. In the same mall we found a great little Mexican restaurant. It is small but there are tables inside and outside. The service is fast and the food is unbelievable. We ate there twice also. Next to that, all in a row, there is a Thai restaurant, a Subway in cast you just need a deli fix. These places were much less expensive than hotels and gourmet type restaurants if you are traveling on a budget. In the middle of this Mall, there is a small courtyard where they have intertainment several nights a week. All are FREE. We got lucky and saw a wonderful Hula show on Friday night and on Saturday, there was a Dixieland band for an hour then a wonderfully crazy band that played fiddles, washboards, accordions, base etc. Everyone was up dancing and clapping and carrying on. What fun. The Keauhou Beach Resort is a wonderful place to stay. Away from the noise of a town but close enough to visit as often as you want to. Will I stay there again? You bet I will. The Outrigger Hotel was booked by anagency for us. It was a surprise to realize that the hotel was located in the southwestern side of the island and not in the northwest. The NW, where the Hilton and the Marriott are located, we found to be quite warm, arid and moon-like! The SW was quite pleasant, tropical and lush. We were blessed for the location of this hotel. The staff was quite polite and accommodating. The food was excellent. The tranquility of the whole place is priceless. The views of the tropical surrounding, the ocean, and the sunsets are unforgettable. The only issue with the hotel is its old carpeting that is planned to be renovated soon. In spite of its age, built in the 70s, the hotel is quite charming and comfortable. Its location from Kona and other attractive places is just perfect. Having a car is a must! We enjoyed snorkeling and swimming using the public sandy beaches accessible within walking distance from the hotel. In spite of having its own sandy beaches it offers many tide pools to enjoy the marine life. We also found the abundance of the sea turtles quite amusing and relaxing in these tide pools and the beaches. For eating, we found a variety of restaurants in Kona and a shopping center up the hill from the hotel driving south on Alii Drive. We definitely stay at this hotel again, as it offers unexpected values to enjoy our vacations. A lovely, very friendly hotel with free wi-fi in the lobby (very helpful for uploading you digital photos to the internet). In particular, the bell service was very helpful in getting our car rental company to go look for our video camera in their parking lot. We got it back the next day, much to the relief of my husband. The most remarkable aspect of this hotel is the tide pools on the hotel grounds. You WILL see Honu (green sea turtles) in the tide pools. Just be careful, the rocks are slippery and you are responsible for yourself if you go out there. I highly recommend buying a pair of reef shoes to protect you feet and for grip. The live music in the bar nightly is pleasant and fun, especially when they have performances by the hula school. It's funny how, when reading these reviews, you'd think people were staying at different hotels, but our four night stay was just wonderful! We'll be back!
