Hawaiian quiltingHawaiian Quilts Collection, Quilting, Wall Hangings, Patterns Hawaiian quilts are unique to the world, a birth of beauty from the blending of Hawaiian and American tradition and culture. Tapa cloth, made from bark of the Wauke tree, was the only cloth available to the early Hawaiians. Making this cloth was an intricate part of Hawaiian culture. It took many days of hard work for the Hawaiian women to make and design tapa, which was stacked to make bedding. The first recorded introduction of quilting to Hawaii was in 1820 when the first missionaries arrived in Hawaii. A group of royal Hawaiian ladies sat on the deck of the sailing ship Thadeus, dressed only in wrapped tapa, where missionary ladies gently showed the art of quilting. The very creative and innovative Hawaiians soon developed a unique quilting style which closely reflected their own culture and traditions, giving birth to the beautiful, more intricate Hawaiian quilt. Hawaiian quilting patterns traditionally reflect objects of nature or everyday household items that evoke the memory of loved ones. Things such as Plumeria blossoms, hair combs worn by Princess Kaiulani, or a Ginger lei. In general, Hawaiian quilt patterns do not use humans or animals in their designs. Hawaiian families treasure their quilts as possessions of great significance. It was traditional for a new quilt to be made for a bride or as a present for a new grandchild. The Hawaiian quilt symbolizes an attachment and a love for Hawaii shared by people throughout the world. Hawaiian BarbecueHawaiian BBQ Salmon Hawaiian BBQ Salmon This Hawaiian BBQ Salmon recipe is courtesy of Tina Plumb in Ventura, CA. She found the barbeque grill information on my web site useful, and therefore sent me this very easy to make dish.My wife made it for her book club and it was a huge hit, even though she did it in the oven - using the BBQ would probably be better. We are having company over in a week and plan to make it it for them - thanx Tina! Update: We tossed in some chopped onions and mushrooms which addedsome "heft" so give that a shot if you want. As can be seen in thepicture below, it got a big thumbs up! INGREDIENTS 1 can of unsweetened coconut milk 1 cup Lawrey's Hawaiian marinade (Alek says Caribeen Jerk marinade works too) 1-2 pounds of thick juicy salmon (thawed out) Alek recommends adding: 2-3 chopped onions 2 packs mushroomsDIRECTIONS Mix coconut milk and marinade (marimilk) in a 9x13 baking dish. Add optional onions and mushrooms Add salmon let sit for 2 hours covered Throw on grill (wrapped in tin foil- optional) and baste with marimilk Open a cold bottle of beer or mix your favorite drink such as a watermelon margarita and enjoy the hawaiian salmon!!! Can optionally be cooked in oven. "Goldie" is glad it's Hawaiian Salmon instead of him being served Alek loads up his plate with Barbeque salmon Vince gives bbq salmon a thumbs-up with chilled Chardonnay Back to my favorite barbeque grill recipes - ©2005 www.komar.org And if you are really into fish, check out our Seward Fishing Charter where we pulled in some nice alaska silver salmon and seward halibut. Plumeria Photos from Hawaii Plumeria is the most common flower that you'll find in Hawaii since it is used in most leis that are given to visitors. It is, however, not native to Hawaii. It is native to tropical and subtropical America. The flowers are found in colors of white, yellow, pink, red, and multiple pastels. In Hawaii one of the best places to view plumeria is at the Koko Crater Botanical Garden - a 60-acre basin inside Koko Crater on the eastern end of the island of Oahu. These plumeria photos are made available by Dr. Kent Bridges, Associate Professor of Botany, at the University of Hawaii. View the photos... As reported in Monday's Maui News, state and federal agencies are posting new warning signs at harbors and boat ramps in Hawaii. They are doing this out of fear that more boating traffic increases the potential for collisions with humpback whales during the winter whale season. View a larger version of the sign and read the entire article in the Maui News. Read more... Tuesday January 10, 2006 | permalink Sheraton Maui Resort Special Packages for 2006 The Sheraton Maui Resort has announced their special packages for 2006. The Sheraton Maui is my personal favorite of the many fine Kaanapali Beach hotels and resorts. It's a top notch resort with a great staff and is certainly not hurt by its prime location at at the north end of Kaanapali Beach near Pu'u Keka'a, the famous Black Rock where the beach is the widest and the swimming and snorkeling are superb. This location gives Sheraton guests a unique sense of privacy. You never feel that you are nestled into an area with many other condominiums, hotels and resorts. Take a look at these specials for 2006.
