On Molokai, for example, you wont find traffic lights, elevators, neon signs or fast food wars. The pristine stretches of white sand beaches are just like the islands streets: uncrowded and blissfully quiet. On Molokai, nothings taller than a palm tree. Molokai is one of those rare destinations where time has stood still. This does not mean that the island is lacking for things to see and do. Far from it. Although 260 square miles in size, Molokai is rich in history and sheer natural beauty. Start on the islands northern coast, home to the worlds tallest sea cliffs. Take the a world-famous mule ride down to Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the historic settlement where Father Damien de Veuster once ministered to natives stricken with Hansens Disease (leprosy). Nature lovers shouldnt pass up the opportunity to hike through the Kamakou Preserve, a lush mountain forest filled with endangered native plants and rare birds. At the center of the island is Kaunakakai , Molokais largest town, where you can meet the local folk and browse the smattering of mom-and-pop stores. Just up north is Palaau State Park, where you can get an up-close look (but maybe not too close) at Kauleonanahoa, the legendary "Phallic Rock." According to legend, if a woman goes to Kauleonanahoa with offerings and spends the night there, she will return home pregnant. On the west side is Kaluakoi, Molokais principal resort area. Here, youll find Papohaku Beach, the largest white sand beach (three miles) in Hawaii. Each May, Papohaku Beach Park is the setting for the Molokai Ka Hula Piko, the islands biggest cultural festival celebrating the birth of the hula . Hawaiian legend says that Laka, the goddess of the hula, gave birth to the Hawaiian dance on a sacred hill in Kaana. It was on this hill that the Hawaiians learned hula of every kind. Would you really order rice AND potato salad if you had a choice? The problem is that too much of the menu is "sort of" Japanese, so it seems not quite right, though it may be very authentic Hawaiian. I came thinking I would get a good hawaiian BBQ like those I had enjoyed while a college freshman in Honolulu, but the BBQ chicken here is not even close. Ask anyone from Hawaii what they miss the most about home and the response is usually "the food". I can't tell you how happy I was to discover that L&L has come to Manhattan! My mouth waters everytime I think about it. They also have Portuguese sausage, which any local knows is a staple to a true local breakfast. I've eaten everything on the menu and I have to agree about the saimin, not the true local style. My only complaint...the one on 8th ave doesn't always play Hawaiian music. Posted by Carmela on 05/26/2005 The Perfect Lunch I'm always looking for tasty, fast, cheap food to have for lunch and when I saw this new restaurant I was a little skeptic of the claims on the flyers stuck on its window but the food looked delicious and the prices reasonable. The first time there I ordered the Luau special because it reminded me of my trip to Hawaii years earlier and wanted to experience that wonderful meal again. I was not disappointed! The food was way too much for me and I couldn't eat everything (that's the largest meal on the menu, I think) and felt very guilty because I'm trying to lose some weight. Unfortunately, the food in this place is addictive! Yes, it's that good! On my next trip I ordered a simple meal of barbecue chicken (the small size) which comes with a generous scoop of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and a small salad. Again, the meal was delicious. Needless to say, I have visited the restaurant again and again. You do have to wait a little while for the food but that's because it's cooked fresh. It's worth the wait. One complaint: my diet is shot! I couldn't wait to rush on over and have my first Hawaiian-style "plate lunch" in this fast-paste city. I loved the Lau Lau combo and especially the barbecue combo! I still can't believe how inexpensive they are. You really get alot of food for the bucks! I'll be going back for more of the Hawaiian-type fare but I have one bone of contention concerning my ultimate favorite local food...saimin. I ordered "your" saimin at the Fulton branch and I was very disappointed with it to say the least. The thought that I might finally have found a place that serves the kind of ramen one would get back home made me salivate at knowing that now that there's an L & L here I won't have to wait till my next visit to Hawaii to satisfy my cravings. The noodles were the type from your local Chinatown restaurant (more like spaghettinistraight and tastless) as for the soup base, it tasted like water with very little flavor. Whether you eat in or take out it is served to go so you can take the rest...you know like if you go to a party and ''make one plate'' when you leave. For such a small area--38 miles long and 10 miles wide--this island has many unique features. It has the longest white-sand beach in Hawaii at Papohaku Beach. It has the world's highest sea cliffs at 2,600 feet on the North Shore. It has Hawaii's only barrier reef that protects the east and south sides of the island. These are only the most obvious highlights. Molokai has only one main road, no traffic lights, a top speed limit of 45, and no building taller than a palm tree! On the west end, the Kaluakoi Resort at Kepuhi Beach offers several complexes of condos and villas on the shore, as well as, a golf course set among the palms. On the southern part of the east end are the Wavecrest Resort and Molokai Shores, both of which have Maui oceanfront condos. Contact the Molokai Chamber of Commerce, the Molokai Visitors Association, or Maui real estate agents for more information about Molokai real estate. Beach Communities with Condos On the island of Maui itself, several beach communities have more of a mix of people from all walks of life than do the resorts at Kapalua, Kaanapali, Wailea, and Makena. These communities house the locals who live and work on West and South Maui. The lodging and accommodations are also an eclectic mix of older homes and newer condo developments. The Napili/Kahana/Honokowai area is a more affordable stretch offering Maui oceanfront condos between the very expensive and exclusive properties at Kapalua and Kaanapali. Lahaina, south of Kaanapali, was once the capital of Hawaii and a whaling center. It still is lively, and has a typical beach town's colorful nightlife. Kihei, on South Maui, is also a bustling, eclectic town that has more affordable lodging, as well as, Maui oceanfront condos.
