Molokai. Kamakou in the

Molokai, Hawaii - History and Culture on The Most Hawaiian Island. One and a half million years ago (give or take a week) two large volcanoes pushed through the surface of the Pacific Ocean and created the island of Molokai. Kamakou in the east, and Maunaloa in the west. A couple days later a third and much smaller caldera, Kauhako, popped up to form the Makanalua peninsula on the north side. Over eons, the north side of the island eroded and fell into the sea, leaving behind the vertical sea cliffs which today make up most of Molokai's spectacular North Shore. It's the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago; 260 square miles (420 sq km) in area, 38 miles (61km) long, and ten miles (16km) wide at its widest point. Anchored in the center of the 8 major islands, Molokai is 25 miles (40km) southeast of Oahu, and a 25-minute flight from Maui. From the eastern end of the island, it's only 8 miles (13km) across the Pailolo Channel to Maui. The population is estimated at 8,000 residents, half of whom live in or near the principal town of Kaunakakai. Nearly 40% are of Hawaiian descent, thus the nick name, "The Most Hawaiian Island." According to the experts, Hawaiians first came to live on Molokai about 650 A.D. Those first settlers most likely originated from the Marquesas, with later migrations, in double hulled canoes, from Tahiti and other areas in the South Pacific. As the Hawaiians had no written language, most of their pre-contact history has come from chants, passed down from generation to generation, which have kept a chronology of events, battles and genealogy. In November, 1778, Captain James Cook sighted Molokai on his first visit to the Sandwich Islands, as he named these islands, but it wasn't until 1786 when Captain George Dixon anchored off Molokai's coast, that Europeans first visited this island. In 1832 a Protestant mission was established at Kalua'aha on the East End by Reverend Harvey Hitchcock, to serve an estimated population of 5,000. His church has not been maintained, but the walls and part of the roof stand today at the 14.5 mile marker. A white marble headstone marks his grave on the hill east of what remains of the church. The oldest known Hawaiian settlement on Molokai occurred in Halawa Valley, at the eastern end of the main highway that crosses the length of the island. The eastern side of the island was heavily populated in pre-contact Hawaii, a result of ample water from the mountains, fertile and level land for farming, and a rich and abundant ocean. More than 60 fish ponds were built along the south shore of Molokai. Most have nearly disappeared, but a few have been reconstructed and are used daily by residents for aquiculture. A drive along the southshore of the island bears testimony to the reliance on the ocean by early Hawaiians. Molokai was renowned for the wisdom and power of its religious leaders, greatly respected and often feared by others in the archipelago. In the 1500s, the famous prophet, Lanikaula, was so revered that pilgrims came from all the Islands to seek his wisdom and advice. Molokai became a place of retreat, protected from war by its religious prestige and the marital alliances of its chiefs. Others were reputed for sorcery. Legend tells of the Kalaipahoa, or poisonwood gods, entering trees on Maunaloa. The grove is said to have been so poisonous that birds fell dead as they flew over it. Legend also tells us that Laka, goddess of the hula, gave birth to the dance on Molokai, at a very sacred place in Ka'ana. This is recognized on Molokai every May, at a celebration of the birth of hula, called Ka Hula Piko. When Laka died, her remains were secretly hidden somewhere beneath the hill, Pu'u Nana. The hula was finally established, the work of Laka was complete, and the dance flourishedthroughout Hawaii. Molokai was praised as "Molokai Ka Hula Piko," Molokai, the center of the dance. This design, by John Kaimikaua and Wainwright Piena, uses traditional Hawaiian motifs to depict the essence of the saying, "Molokai Ka Hula Piko." To the early Hawaiians the mo'o (lizards) were a symbol of spirituality and good fortune. The central design depicts this spiritual continuity with the mo'o arranged in a circle. The triangle depicts a Hawaiian value called "Lokahi," which is symbolic of a balance between man, nature, and God. Petroglyphs within the triangle portray a man and woman in dance. In the uppermost part of the triangle is a rising sun with a dot in the center symbolizing the piko of the hula. Beneath the circle is a motif depicting water, while at the top, the triangles represent fire. In the real world, water and fire are the two elements that cannot be mixed, but the spiritual essence of these elements mix in the hula. The ancient kumu hula of Molokai stressed to their students that they should dance with the fluidity of water and with the spark of fire. The middle row of diamonds, is a design called by the Hawaiians "na maka ke akua," or "eyes ofthe gods." Eyes are symbolic of the past, because our ancestors look upon us and guide us in thislife. Eyes also represent the living, as we look back upon the paths of our ancestors for inspirationand guidance. The hula provides a means for us to look back to the works of our ancestors through its movements, motions and chants. Above the "na maka ke akua" design are ferns representing the greenery worn by the dancers and below is the half-circle-point motif representing the rays of the sun rising in the east. To the early Hawaiians, the rising sun was symbolic of constant renewal and rebirth in the hula. Most quilters pull out basting threads as they applique but if any remain, this is the time to remove them. Isn't it beautiful and aren't you proud of yourself? You should be. Now you are ready to assemble your quilt. Batting can be bought by the yard in fabric stores but it is far easier to buy seamless sheets in the size you need. They are available in everything from Crib (45"x 60") to King (120"x 120") size at Variety stores, some fabric shops and of course from quilting supply stores and catalogs. There are some excellent on-line resources for telephone orders, eg. Hancocks or Keepsake Quilting; see LINKS page. Most quilters use polyester batting but pure cotton and poly/cotton blends are also available. Batting thickness is largely a matter of personal preference. The thinner the batting, the easier to quilt and the smaller your stitches will be. A very thick batting can result in a quilt which is too heavy to use as a bedspread, particularly in a warm climate. It will however, make a quilt which is "puffier" and more sculptured in appearance. There are definate differences between brands of batting and you may want to check out several different ones. Hobbs Polydown is a good, all-purpose choice used by many quilters. Backing: Remember that third large square of fabric you set aside months ago. Now is the time for it to come out of hiding to become the back of your quilt. If you didn't do it before, press it exactly as you did the other squares; lengthwise into halves, then into quarters, then eighths. ASSEMBLY For this step, you will again need the large flat surface -- several tables or the floor -- which you used to lay out your quilt face prior to appliqueing. Just as you did then, spread the fabric for the back of your quilt flat and fasten at the edges. Over this spread your sheet of batting making sure it lies smoothly, covering the entire back of quilt. Finally, (at last), spread your quilt top over the other two layers matching folds in face and back. Be very sure that the fabric grain in both pieces runs in the same direction. If it doesn't, quilting will be almost impossible since the "give" in fabric differs with grain direction. Check around edges of layout to make sure the fabric layers match at center folds and corners. Some adjusting and smoothing will almost certainly be necessary. Batting will probably protrude beyond edges. It should, you can trim it later. Using long quilters' pins, fasten edges loosely together. Starting in the center, pin all layers together, first along fold lines including diagonals, then securing layers with more pins about 12-14 inches apart throughout the quilt. There is no need to measure, just be sure all layers are firmly pinned. Finally, unfasten from surface, pin edges neatly and trim off surplus batting a few inches beyond edge of quilt. Your quilt is now ready to be moved to a table for basting. BASTING You now have an assembled quilt, pinned together and draped over a table. Start at the the center,(tired of that - OK - the "PIKO" ) with a long basting needle and regular sewing thread, preferably white. Taking large stitches, 11/2-2 inches, baste along the fold line through alllayers, to one of the outside edges. Take 2-3 loose stitches to end thread. Return to the center and repeat, basting to opposite edge. Now, move out 10-12 inches from center line which you have basted. Starting at center fold,( not quilt center), again baste out to both edges, parallel to previous basting. Measuring and placing pins to insure a straight line may be helpful but is not essential. Continue this process on both sides of quilt, working in opposite directions from center fold.Smooth out any surplus fabric on either face or back, as you go. When you reach the edges,parallell to your basting lines, place your last row of basting approximately where you want your finished quilt edge to be. Ideally, this line should be an equal distance from all outside edges of your pattern. In reality this may not be quite so, try for fairly equal. At this point your quilt is basted in one direction. Turn it around and do exactly the same thing going in the opposite direction.The finished result will be a grid of neatly basted squares which will hold all parts of your quilt together as you work. Trim all outside edges 3-4 inches beyond edge of basting. Part of this surplus will eventually go inside your quilt binding. The rest allows for adjustments and can be trimmed off later. TRANSITIONS This is another step which has gone rather quickly. If you belong to a quilt club and were lucky enough to have had help from other quilters, it probably took only a few hours; if you are working alone, a day or two. At this point, many experienced quilters choose to start a second quilt. The reason is simple, while quilting on one they are appliqueing on the second. This introduces an element of variety into the work and eliminates any possible boredom which may result from looking at the same quilt every day for months on end. Of course anyone who decides to do this is clearly hooked on Hawaiian quilting. Believe it or not your quilt is now more than half finished. From here on you will be working with the fully assembled quilt as you master the fine art of quilting. Did you spread it out on a bed yet to admire? And I did, sorta. Eventually. I got my new fabric all washed and ready and started cutting. Unfortunately, I musta been half asleep at the time, because I cut it wrong and had to go back to the fabric store yet again! Sheesh! Fabric 6, Mokihana O. However, the next day I was much more successful, and got my applique piece all properly cut out - Mokihana 1, Fabric 6. The following day I cut out my background piece - Mokihana 2, Fabric 6 (I’m catching up!). I carefully unfolded my green ulu applique piece and voila! There it was, waiting for me to baste it onto the background fabric. I think I should get a point for that. K’den. Mokihana 3 - Fabric 6. Then, the next day of quiet basting with my friend, I got the whole pattern basted onto the background! Pau! Mokihana 4, Fabric 6. Now I am ready to start appliqueing the pattern to the background. And I fully expect to have my score keep climbing! This is turning out to be a very rewarding project for me. I feel very spiritually connected to it, feeling a real connection to Hawaiian women years and years before me designing and quilting their own works of art. I couldn’t make it out to The Gathering this week. I was buried with work and a very large truck with a cherry picker and shredder attached to it was parked in my long, narrow driveway while a crew from Portland General Electric trimmed branches from the firs, maples, alders and willows away from the power lines. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t get out; it would have been a lovely day. However, there is next week. And I have a quilt square ready to be appliqued. The colors are just what I wanted and I feel so good about starting this. It is a song to me, and I am loving the singing of it.
