Maui Ocean Center :: The Hawaiian Aquarium NEW! - Download our Ocean Users Guide - a must for enjoying Maui beaches (2.71 MB file download - Requires Adobe Acrobat Viewer ). Take a journey of discovery at Maui Ocean Center. This state-of-the-art marine park on the island of Maui is the only facility in the world dedicated to fostering understanding, wonder and respect for Hawaii’s marine life. Here, visitors can see spectacular live coral displays (the largest collection in the nation), marvel at elusive garden eels and majestic lionfish, muse at the colorful Hawaiian wrasse, enjoy playful swimming displays by Hawai‘i’s beloved green sea turtles and awe at close encounters with sharks, rays and more – while learning about Hawai‘i’s natural history and cultural heritage. The Maui Ocean Center is centrally located in oceanfront Ma‘alaea within minutes of all major resort areas and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Set amidst this three-acre marine park are more than 60 self-paced interactive exhibits; an expansive outdoor central courtyard; two restaurants – Seascape Ma‘alaea Restaurant and Reef Café; and the Maui Ocean Center Store. A Journey of Discovery … In Less Than A Day Through years of research and meticulous care, Maui Ocean Center has gathered the best and most unique collection of Hawai‘i’s marine life. As a result, what would take weeks, if not a lifetime to explore in the wild, can easily be seen in a leisurely stroll through the facility in one day. For visitors, this aquatic experience is both educational and breathtaking as they encounter hundreds of endemic animal species. To enhance the learning experience, digital audio guides, available at the park’s information booth, provide colorful commentary on the animals that call Hawai‘i home (guides available in English, Spanish, German and Japanese), while expert naturalists are always nearby to answer any questions visitors may have. Complimentary naturalist presentations are also scheduled daily at half past the hour in various exhibits throughout the aquarium. An average visit to the Hawaiian Aquarium lasts approximately one and a half to two hours, but most visitors stay longer to absorb the breathtaking views, linger over lunch at the aquarium’s two restaurants or to immerse themselves in the Maui Ocean Center Store, a veritable treasure trove of ocean- and island-inspired jewelry, art, clothing, toys, gifts, books and logo items. ©2005 Maui Ocean Center

Island Flavor Lindsey Cassiday and Ralen Chang have lived in Hawaii their whole lives. It's where they met and where their relationship blossomed—so it's no surprise that their wedding was a celebration of the islands' distinctive culture. The intimate, outdoor ceremony, at the home of Lindsey's parents in Diamond Head, Oahu, was performed in both English and Hawaiian by a friend, Ka'au, who acted as kahu (priest). The aisle was strewn with yellow and white plumeria, a local flower, and as a special addition to the ceremony, the couple honored their parents by presenting them with maile-leaf and ginger leis. Barefoot and Wedded The bride and groom recited their vows facing the ocean, surrounded by their wedding party. The bridesmaids wore simple sleeveless white tops with pale-blue skirts and pikake choker leis, similar to the choker Lindsey wore. The groomsmen were dressed in Hawaiian-print shirts in gray and pale blue; they wore green maile-leaf leis like Ralen around their necks. The only thing missing? Shoes—all of them were barefoot. Hula Hunks In the clear-topped reception tent, with views of the South Pacific sky, Lindsey and Ralen took their first spin on the dance floor to "Hawaiian Rainbow," by the Ho'opi'i Brothers. "We chose that song because it's all about the islands and their flowers," says Lindsey. Her favorite moment was when the wedding coordinator surprised everyone by leading the groom and groomsmen in the hukilau , a special hula. It's a Hawaiian tradition for the bride to do a hula for her groom on the wedding night, but at this wedding, the roles were reversed. "The hula was hilarious because Ralen and his groomsmen were in matching outfits," says Lindsey. "Everyone was laughing and cheering." Here, it often seems as if the past and the present exist simultaneously. One of the island’s most popular cultural attractions is the Kalokoeli Fishpond, where ancient Hawaiians once practiced a remarkably sophisticated form of aquaculture. As many as 60 of these fish ponds once operated along the southern shore, and most of them were constructed at least 700 years ago. Another must-see is the Iliiliopae Heiau, one of the largest ancient temple platforms in all of Hawaii. Set deep within a thriving forest, this historic site offers a palpable sense of wonder and spirituality. : Ancient Art of Surfing : Interactive Hula Dancer : Find Cultural Events : Historic Places M EETINGS & C ONVENTIONS | T RAVEL T RADE R ESOURCES | M EDIA C OMMUNICATIONS Corporate Information | Contact Us | Privacy Policy | Terms & Conditions | ©2005 Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau
