Later, introduced to the fabrics and sewing techniques of American missionaries, islanders developed the elaborate appliqud flower, leaf and vine designs that have become the hallmark of a "Hawaiian quilt." Today, quilts are being made throughout Hawai'i by women and men of all ages, professions and ethnicities who stitch away in quilt shops, in classes and at home. Many of today's quiltmakers combine design motifs from the past with creative ideas of their own, producing textiles as unique as the artists themselves. Helen Friend is one Hawai'i artist whose quilts reflect current events and contemporary vision. A passionate needlewoman since the age of five, it wasn't until 1985 that she discovered quilting as a form of expression. While her large quilts and hangings honor traditional patterns, she prefers to explore her own ideas and create something totally new. "Every quilt should have a reason behind it; that's where the mana (spiritual power) comes in," says Friend. Friend has drawn inspiration from the challenges of major competitions, from nature's power, from news articles, from conservation work on historic textiles, and from class assignments at the University of Hawai'i fiber arts program. Since her first quilt 10 years ago, Friend has tried to make a quilt a year to enter in local, juried mixed-media exhibitions. Her first piece, Liberty Quilt, represented Hawai'i at the Great American Quilt Festival in 1986, a competitive show held in New York to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. After Liberty Quilt, Friend turned her attention homeward and created a series of quilts that originate in traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs but depart from rigid convention. Her latest creation is Red Wall, hand-sewn in reverse appliqu. Says the artisan, "The idea first came from a color combination I saw a few years ago. But as I began to work, the catastrophe of Rwanda unfolded. And as I finished the project, the war in Bosnia continued. I like to think that each stitch recognizes a life lost." No matter what project shes involved in, its clear that Friend loves her work. "To me," she says with a satisfied smile, "quilting is a most satisfying way of recording my life." Stitches in Time One of the goals of the Hawaiian quilting festival this weekend is to perpetuate the cultural art form By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto Star-Bulletin IT'S a quilting bee to beat the band. This weekend's inaugural Hawaiian Quilt Festival at Blaisdell Center offers a patchwork of activities. Displays, exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, a marketplace and hands-on practice cover each step in the quilting process - pattern tracing, cutting, laying out, pinning, basting, hemming or appliqueing, and quilting. "We'll have old quilt patterns and dressmaker's tracing paper for purchase at $2 for a two-yard sheet," said Augusta-Helen "Aunty Gussie" Bento, president of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project and co-chair of the three-day festival. "It's enough to trace one large quilt design and a couple of small designs. The patterns themselves stretch out to 40 or 48 inches." Bento said different quilt patterns will be available Saturday and Sunday, plus pencils for general use. "Then, people will be able to quilt on a horse that's there for community quilting," she said. Oahu and neighbor island quilters will lead workshops, such as stencils, Hawaiian tropical placemats, Hawaiian quilt pillow, miniature Hawaiian quilt, and designing a Hawaiian quilt. Cost will range from $26.50 to $75. Co-chair Elaine Zinn said festival goals are three-fold - "to help the public understand what the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is about, to perpetuate the art of Hawaiian quilting so that it continues to grow, and to let people know how to take care of their quilts, because our environment and insects are so threatening to textiles." The 16-year Research Project has documented and registered more than 900 quilts and 700 quilt patterns on all islands. People will be able to sign up at the festival for future registries. "The project is important to preserve the history of Hawaiian quilts," said Zinn, who produced the 13-part public television "Hawaiian Quilting" series, "and to preserve the actual quilts that are still with us, so they will last a few more generations. They are very precious." "It was the greatest show of friendship to share one's quilt patterns," said Elizabeth Akana, who can conjure a genteel picture of tutu (grandmothers) with flowers in their hair, gathered on a porch to share snitches of gossip and stitches of colorful threads. "The quilts are enlightening us about our history and bringing about a love of history, because when you're dealing with a quilt you've got to have love in your heart," Akana said. Meanwhile, people can take their own paper and pencil, and trace quilt patterns at Waianae Library, which has a prodigious collection of 400 patterns, with more patterns yet available at Kailua Library and Brigham Young University-Hawaii collections. Akana said of Hawaii's unique quilting process and product: "We're looking at love in fabric and thread." Historical threads Event: Hawaiian Quilt Festival Place: Blaisdell Center Times: "Preview" 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, festival 9a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Admission: $15 for Friday preview; $5 Saturday and Sunday; $20 special festival package. Hawaiian City Garden

Best Gardening Resources Here Best Gardening Resources Here Gardening--Fun and Frugal! Gardening--Fun and Frugal! by: Cyndi Roberts Whether you are an avid vegetable gardener, a beginning herb gardener or just like to have a pretty yard, these frugal tips may help you save a little money! 1. Stale coffee and coffee grounds make great organic fertilizer. They provide many trace minerals and low, gentle levels of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. 2. Remember that a good soaking of water less often is better than a light sprinkling every day -- for veggies and for your lawn. 3. If your neighbor has a plant you particularly like, ask for a cutting, instead of going to the nursery and buying one. Maybe you could trade a cutting from one of your own plants. 4. To easily water a tomato plant, bury a bottomless coffee can next to the plant and pour the water into the can. This allows the water to go straight to the roots. 5. Plant marigolds in your vegetable garden. They will attract insects that eat aphids and other pests. 6. My husband bought some used carpet at a garage sale, cut it into wide strips and laid it down between the rows in our garden. Now we can pick peas with getting our shoes muddy. 7. Use grass clippings as mulch around your vegetable plants to keep moisture in and weeds out. Just don't use the clippings right after you have fertilized your grass or treated for weed control. 8. If you have access to them, pine needles make excellent mulch. 9. A natural, frugal garden pest spray: mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Use 3 tablespoons of this mixture to 1 quart of water and spray on plants. 10. In the herb garden, to keep plants like mint from taking over too big an area, put it in a clay pot and simply plant the whole pot! "He who plants a garden, plants happiness."
