A Lifetime Cruise Hawaiian Cruise Colin Hartness An Exotic Hawaiian Cruise Trip by Colin Hartness Hawaiian Cruises are everyone's dream cruise to the Hawaiian Islands on an exquisite ocean liner. Being pampered from dawn to dusk with exemplary cuisine, entertainment and fun for all that too for a moderate sum on a Hawaiian Cruise is definitely something out of the world. An increasing number of cruisers and liners are now regularly calling on the Hawaiian ports as also at the neighboring islands of Kaua'i, Maui, Kona and Hilo. Hawaiian Islands, a cluster of 137, provide adventure sports, relaxation and a new insight to oneself. The islands make one wonder whether you are at land or at sea. Hawaiian Cruises transport you to a heavenly state. Because of the tropical latitude, the weather remains the same through most of the year. The eastern side has more rainfall while the western part is the dry land. Locals enjoy skiing and snowboard in the snow-covered areas of the Big Island. The Hawaiian culture is very diverse and almost every nation's culture is found here. Hence, any newcomer is automatically drawn into the Hawaiian culture, which is enjoyment and adventure. Honolulu is the capital city. It is believed that the first permanent inhabitants of this island had sailed in from the islands of Marquesas in the southern hemisphere between 300 and 800 A.D. Hawaiian Cruises along the different yet distinct islands provide an insight into the uniqueness of each island. Hawaii Island is a big one with Kilauea crater, said to be the home of the fire Goddess, Pele. Maui, once the sole property of the royals, is famous for its exquisite swimming spots. The rainbows across the cliffs and waterfalls of Honolulu are nature's splendor. In spite of the diversity the common thing of these islands is 'aloha', the spirit of welcoming. World know Hawaiian people for their hospitality and friendliness. They can mingle easily and in no time have others dancing to their music and enjoying themselves thoroughly with their cuisine. The Hawaiian Cruise enables the visitors to participate in the Hawaiian culture. The vacationing people get unlimited happiness aboard the floating cruise liners and fabulous treatment for little fare. U.S and Canadian citizens need both proofs of citizenship and identity to board Hawaiian Cruise. Proof of identity could be driving license, Government's identification card and in case of children between ages 6 to 17, a school identity card is good enough. In addition to these, a valid passport to sail is also necessary. Permanent residents of the United States need to have on them their Alien Resident Card (ARC). In cases of children traveling without their parents, the legal guardian with them should possess the parent's consent letter authorizing the minor to travel with the guardian, which is also important in case of emergency of any kind. The sheltered coast and delightful beaches made Lahaina an ideal playground for the king and his royal family. Today, Lahaina could easily be called the fun capital of Hawaii. Known all over the world for its colorful waterfront atmosphere, Lahaina attracts over a million visitors each year. People of all ages love to explore the famous Fropnt Street where one can find resident celebrities like George Benson and Carol Burnett casually sipping cofee at one of Lahaina's sixty-odd restaurants. Informality and fun are written all over this town, a spirit that harks back to the 1840's when up to four hundred whaling ships would anchor off Lahaina 'Roadstead,' discharging their crews of rowdy sailors. Afer months at sea these 'salty dogs' went straight to the taverns for grog and bawdy merriment. Troublesome drunks were thrown in the 'Hale Pahao' prison which still stands on Prison Street. Strolling through Lahaina is a must for every visitor. The original historic flavor has been maintained through the efforts of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, while being kept contemporary by the Lahainatown Action Committee. Hundreds of curio shops, sophisticated jewelers, art galleries and boutiques contain a myriad of wares ideal for gifts or personal mementos of your visit to Paradise. The historical town center is noted for its 110-year-old Banyan Tree, one of the world's largest, which grows over a whole block just in front of The Wharf Cinema Center. The Center, which boasts more than 50 shops and restaurants, surrounds a comfortable courtyard decorated with waterfalls and convenient, umbrella-shaded tables. Opposite is the Pioneer Inn, built in 1906, which looks out on the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor crammed with cruise boats and private yachts. Looking back from the Carthaginian, the authentic replica of a whaling brig, one can see the Seawall and shops lining Front Street. Beyond the Banyan Tree and past the tennis courts is 505 Front Street, a nautical 'village' of oceanfront shops and restaurants next to the Lahaina Shores Hotel. A walk toward the north end of town leads past the Wharf, the Seawall and Lahaina Market Place, a collection of shops and restaurants set in an open-court atmosphere. After Lahaina Shopping Center, with a large parking area and a good place to find photo supplies, suntan lotions and comfortable shoes, and across the street from Longhi's, you'll find the Lahaina Center, home of Hilo Hattie and the world-renowned Hard Rock Caf. A few blocks to the north, you can enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of the Lahaina Cannery. Lahaina, by day or night, is a warmhearted, romantic town which, for centuries, has been a popular haven for vacationers.

Later, introduced to the fabrics and sewing techniques of American missionaries, islanders developed the elaborate appliqud flower, leaf and vine designs that have become the hallmark of a "Hawaiian quilt." Today, quilts are being made throughout Hawai'i by women and men of all ages, professions and ethnicities who stitch away in quilt shops, in classes and at home. Many of today's quiltmakers combine design motifs from the past with creative ideas of their own, producing textiles as unique as the artists themselves. Helen Friend is one Hawai'i artist whose quilts reflect current events and contemporary vision. A passionate needlewoman since the age of five, it wasn't until 1985 that she discovered quilting as a form of expression. While her large quilts and hangings honor traditional patterns, she prefers to explore her own ideas and create something totally new. "Every quilt should have a reason behind it; that's where the mana (spiritual power) comes in," says Friend. Friend has drawn inspiration from the challenges of major competitions, from nature's power, from news articles, from conservation work on historic textiles, and from class assignments at the University of Hawai'i fiber arts program. Since her first quilt 10 years ago, Friend has tried to make a quilt a year to enter in local, juried mixed-media exhibitions. Her first piece, Liberty Quilt, represented Hawai'i at the Great American Quilt Festival in 1986, a competitive show held in New York to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. After Liberty Quilt, Friend turned her attention homeward and created a series of quilts that originate in traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs but depart from rigid convention. Her latest creation is Red Wall, hand-sewn in reverse appliqu. Says the artisan, "The idea first came from a color combination I saw a few years ago. But as I began to work, the catastrophe of Rwanda unfolded. And as I finished the project, the war in Bosnia continued. I like to think that each stitch recognizes a life lost." No matter what project shes involved in, its clear that Friend loves her work. "To me," she says with a satisfied smile, "quilting is a most satisfying way of recording my life."
