[ Check rates for Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort ] We loved the Waikiki Marriott, granted we stay in marriotts most everywhere we go because we've always been very pleased with them but this hotel was especially nice. Concerige was amazing and gave us great directions to our Luau on the other side of the island and to Pearl harbor. She gave us a ton of really good insider information and saved us a lot of money on different events and souveniers. The lobby is open air as most in Hawaii are and it is spacious and absolutely gorgeous. The flower arrangements were divine!! You have never seen anything like them. We had a double balcony and had views of both the mountain (which looks almost magical at night) and the beach. It was very spacious and you could sink into the beds and stay all day if there wasn't so much to do. Great room service. The decor is so tropical and modern. The room had the most beautiful drapes and sheets. Yellow usually isn't a color I would like but they found a beautiful pattern that was pure Hawaii. The decor throughout the hotel was just as true to the tropical spirit. I have to mention once more the gorgeous floral arrangments! The architechture is also really modern and open. [ Check rates for Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort ] by janiac This hotel was very nice and fit our needs. The rooms were quite large. We didn't add a cot to our two doubles, but one could have easily fit. We had an ocean view and a nice balcony to enjoy evenings on. I actually enjoyed quite a few nights eating breakfast or snacks there that I had stored in my fridge. The music from the hotel next door could be nice at times, annoying at night when I was trying to sleep. Although, I was usually so tired, it didn't matter how loud it sounded. Pluses: Hotel has a lot of things onsite -- two ABC stores for basic needs, restaurants and stores, plus two concierge desks located in different parts of the hotel with usually two concierges working both desks (meaning four total), and a very nice spa. Drawbacks: the pools were smallish for a resort. . Elevators were very slow (partly because all 400 girls and parents had to be places at certain times or tried to go back to their rooms at the same time) I don't know how much my room was because it was part of the package deal we got through AACD Location is great if you don't want to be situated in the middle of the wackiness of Waikiki. It's situated on the far end of the strip so it's quieter, but close enough to easily walk everywhere. There is a small beach area with a protective breakwall (almost a completely walled in beach area), so it's safe, but not as pretty as a natural ocean. There are fish in here, and the girls and I brought bread down and fed them (looked like a piranha frenzy after awhile). [ Check rates for Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort ] My family of 4 was there from 1/25 until 1/27- 2 nights. Location was outstanding. Directly across the street is the ocean. We had a Corner Deluxe room 2232. Saw beautiful sunsets from our window. The room only had 1 balcony, but the window facing the ocean was breathtaking. (Though it really would have been that much nicer had it been a balcony, too.) The room was clean and large. The service in the hotel was decent. We ate for breakfast at Kuhio Grill, the buffet. My hubby and our sons (11 and 10) all loved it. Good selection. Dinner was room service one night, again very good, and other night was at D.K. Steakhouse which is in conjuntion with Sansei Sushi. Same owner. D.K. Steakhouse was extremely overpriced. EXTREMELY. My hubby's steak was fair, and overcooked. My shrimp in garlic was fair. Our appetizers were the Monster Shrimp cocktail, you get 3, but they were HUGE and I got the escargot. The escargot was just okay, and I love escargot. Our bill was $250 with tip for 2 adults and 2 kids. Both of our boys ordered lobster tails (about 7 oz each) for $40 each. The thing that sucks is that for the prices that they charge NOTHING comes with the dinners. Everything else is ala carte. Ridiculous. The lighting is VERY VERY poor, too. We will not return there. Service was friendly, but for those prices these had better be. MUST SEE is the beach of Lanikai! Lanikai Beach is what we saw on the Travel Channel. They named it the #1 beach on all of Hawaii. So, since we were on Oahu, and we were not that impressed with Waikiki, we decided to try to find this tucked away gem. It is all that and the bag of chips. Lanikai is about 1/2 hour away from the hotel. Get a map, though, as it is really tucked away. So, Marriott is fine, great location, no doubt, too. Would definitely stay there again. Oh, and their pool is a joke, as I had read on other boards. heard from my sons that the water is like ICE. Hit the beach, avoid the pool. last visit on January, 2005. Written on May 30, 2004. [ Check rates for Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort ] Great features and a great location at a decent price for Waikiki! We stayed in the Paoakalani Tower which is the newer of the two towers and had a nice view of Diamond Head and the ocean. The Marriott complex occupies an entire block at the east end of the Waikiki strip with the beach right across the street. It is also within walking distance of most all of the shopping, dining and night life Waikiki has to offer. We really enjoyed the various street performers that come out at twilight to earn your tips. Parking is expensive, but unless youre part of a tour group youll want to rent a car (Hertz has an office & cars at the Marriott) to get out and explore the island beyond Honolulu. The traffic was congested as reputed, but nowhere near as bad as driving on the LA or NY freeways. Theres easy access via Kapahulu Street to Interstate H1 to drive over to Pearl Harbor and the North Shore, plus there are also some scenic drives we made on Highways 61 & 63 through the mountains northeast of Honolulu. The hotel lobby has a beautiful open-air atrium complete with waterfalls and there is a convenience store and a coffee shop adjoining it. There are also other stores in a mini-mall plus three good restaurants in the complex. The staff was friendly, helpful, and tri-lingual since several major Japanese travel agencies book tours groups at this hotel. Service was excellent and we loved the tropical dcor in our room. We will definitely stay there again! The Hawaiian Islands offer tropical adventures you will never forget. Lucy Pemoni / Reuters By CruiseCritic staff GETTING THERE For most travelers, the challenge of getting to and from Hawaii is the only negative on this itinerary. Flights from the East Coast typically connect in Los Angeles and San Francisco, which means you're adding a five-plus hour flight to the six hours it took to get there from New York, say, or Boston. If you have little ones with you and can spare the time, you may want to consider spending a night or two in California to break up the travel time. Obviously, West Coast residents have a shorter haul, and folks in some central gateways, such as Minneapolis and Dallas, can find direct flights to Honolulu International Airport that take about 8 1/2 hours each. Keep in mind that the Christmas holiday season - from about Dec. 21 to Jan. 4 - is high season, which means that air prices are at their most expensive. Summer is also popular because it's "family season." Thanksgiving to mid-December is considered "low season" and offers the best bargains. While NCL is currently the only cruise line originating and ending in Hawaii, other lines offer Hawaii itineraries that sail to or from the west coast of the U.S., Mexico or Canada. The advantage of cruising from the mainland is that you eliminate one or both flights, but keep in mind that you could be adding as many as eight days at sea to the duration of the voyage. Also remember that one-way air fares can be expensive, so you may be better off booking air through the cruise lines and taking advantage of their bulk air rates. THE ISLANDS The islands you are likely to visit on a roundtrip Honolulu cruise and cruises to-and-from the West Coast are Oahu (Honolulu), Maui, the Big Island (ports of Kona or Hilo), Kauai and even Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati. Lanai and Molokai are typically only available as shore excursions from the main islands. Repositioning cruises may only visit Oahu and Maui, while also incorporating such South Seas destinations as Bora Bora, Tahiti, Fiji and New Zealand. MANEUVERING AROUND HONOLULU Oahu's cruise port, the Aloha Tower Marketplace, is located about 15 minutes from the airport, and transportation from the airport to area hotels (about seven miles) is a snap via shuttle service (about $18 roundtrip on Aloha Hawaii Trans, for example), taxi or car rental. If you rent a car at the airport, keep in mind that, unlike some other islands you may have visited, Honolulu operates like any other American city - which means you won't experience culture shock navigating the roads. If you are simply transferring from the airport to the cruise port, plan on a 15-minute cab ride. Be aware, however, that the return trip from the cruise port to the airport can be another matter entirely - with daunting crowds at the buses (we suggest springing for a cab) and long delays at some of the terminals at the security check point. Waits of up to two hours are not unheard of if you're trying to leave at the same time as everyone else. Our advice? Stay a few extra days (Oahu deserves a week if you can swing it) or at least consider departing at night for a red eye flight home that will put you on the West Coast in time for breakfast or on the East Coast in the afternoon. BEING THERE Most Hawaiian Island cruises begin and/or end in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu - the most logical in terms of air access. It being the port of embarkation - or debarkation - means passengers often are hurrying from the airport to the ship or hustling away to catch a flight home. But don't forego a pre- or post-cruise stay if you can afford the time because there is so much to see on Oahu. From whale watching and surfing on the stunning beaches of the North Shore to the Polynesian Cultural Center and Pearl Harbor, the island has attractions to appeal to a wide variety of interests. I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. Traveler rating: Honolulu: Aqua Kuhio Village : "Hell Hole-Stay Away From This Place" Mar 26, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, Ca Compare prices with: I stayed from March 18-March 25. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. Traveler rating: Honolulu: Aqua Kuhio Village : "Worst experience ever" Mar 21, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, seattle, wa Compare prices with: I stayed at this hotel in: March, 2005 My ratings for this hotel are: Rooms Service Value Cleanliness Dining Activities and gym I traveled to this hotel with: spouse/partner My visit was for: leisure We visited Aqua Kuhio "Hotel" in March of 2005. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. Feb 18, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Kansas City, MO. View larger photos Compare prices with: Trip dates Jan. 11-18, 2005. We stayed in tower 2, 9th floor. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them.
