The group is concerned with all non-native invasive species threatening agriculture, watersheds, native ecosystems, tourism, industry, human health, or the quality of life on Oahu. Pest Alert Flyers Miconia (241 kb) Miconia calvescens is Oahu's number one invasive threat. Manuka (306 kb) Also called New Zealand tea tree, this bush is creeping into Oahu's valleys. Himalayan Blackberry (220 kb) Have you tried walking though a Himalayan blackberry thicket? Fountain Grass (238 kb) Fountain grass is fueling fires across Hawaii. Bush Beardgrass (297 kb) This invasive bunchgrass is only found in two areas on Oahu. There is still a chance of removing it! Indian Rhododendron (275 kb) This beautiful plant is on the Hawaii noxious weed list and is a close relative of the dreaded Miconia. Smoke Bush (238 kb) Also known as butterfly bush, this ornamental plant has escaped the garden. sample sample What plants and supplies made Hawaiian quilts? When and how did the start?The Hawaiian quilts first started when the hawai'ians held their first sewing circle on Sandwich Island. The first time they met was on April 3,1820. The ladies came from Boston and started the sewing circle. The plants used to make the designs for the Hawaiian quilts are ulu, pineapple, mum, hibiscus, wood rose, anthurium, white ginger, laua'e, heliconia, torch ginger, bird of paradise and kukui. To make the design, they study the shape of the plants and then create an exaggerated form of pattern which is beautifully symmetrical. The tools that the makers used were quilting hoops, sharp pins, bees wax, needles, art gum, scissors , dritz maker, ruler, thimbles, thread, stem ripper, pens and pencils. The quilting hoops come in all kinds of sizes. Sharp pins need to be ordinary straight pins and perfect silk pins will do the job but quilting pins are better. The art gum for cleaning spots or light penciled lines. The ruler comes in handy. Your middle finger is the pushing finger. Thimbles are important to use for your middle finger and for your thumb. It will be easier to use a thinner needle so the appliqueing of the quilt will look better. HONOLULU - Commercial fishing has sharply depleted numbers of several species in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and threatens the health of the pristine island chain's ecosystem, according to a private study released Monday. Populations of the opakapaka, or Hawaiian pink snapper, have plummeted 90 percent in 10 years, according to the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Conservation Biology Institute. Stocks of the hapu'upu'u, or the Hawaiian grouper, have sunk 64 percent over the same period in the 1,200 miles of islands and atolls northwest of Kauai, according to the study. "There is little doubt they are being depleted far below a state of ecological health," said Dennis Heinemann, one of the study's authors. Fishery council disagrees The federal body responsible for fishing rules around the island chain criticized the study as biased against fishing. The study used simple proxies rather than true estimates of fish populations, said Paul Dalzell, the senior scientist for the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council. "That is a selective and partisan use of the information by the organizations," he said. "It is not a peer-reviewed scientific publication. It is purely their own interpretation of the information." Nine bottomfishers working around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, primarily in federal waters, bring in a catch worth about $1.5 million each year. Refuge created Last month, Gov. Linda Lingle declared state waters around the islands a marine refuge and banned fishing three miles from the islands' shorelines. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is planning to designate the area the country's 14th National Marine Sanctuary and U.S. Rep.
