Often, however, the past itself is a key: to the future. The past is a better such key, in fact, than is the present. It is improbable that everything that can happen is happening today. Something brand new may start, of course, but something that has happened in the past is more likely to occur again, regardless of what's going on today. It is in this light that a new feature story presents the outlines of Kilauea's explosive past. Kilauea is not exploding now, but it has done so in a small way in the recent past and in a big way during the past hundreds to thousands of years. If we are to know the whole gamut of what Kilauea can do, it behooves us to examine its past as carefully as possible. Explosions can be hazardous to both people on the ground and traveling in jet airliners. The more we know about Kilauea's explosions, the better chance we have of mitigating their risk to us. Surf along north facing shores will be 4 to 6 feet through Wednesday. Surf along west facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Wednesday. Surf along south facing shores will be 1 to 3 feet through Wednesday. Outlook through Monday Jan 30. Surf along east facing shores will be at the 8 foot advisory level through Thursday. Trade winds may however remain strong enough to keep surf on the east shore near the advisory level into Saturday. A large west-northwest swell arriving Thursday night will likely produce advisory level surf of 15 feet along north facing shores Friday and Saturday. I had the kahlua and lau lau combo--any restaurant that allows you to double up on pork is all right in my book. It was served with rice AND macaroni salad--two carbs instead of just one! Along with the usual ketchup, mustard, and relish, there was a very good Vietnamese hot sauce on the condiment stand. Lest you think I'm totally unhealth conscious, the taro leafs and cabbage that came with the kahlua and lau lau were tender and flavorful. The staff was friendly, helpful, and genuinely concerned about my dining experience.
