Hawaiian Astronomical Society Storybook
Hawaiian Astronomical Society - Deepsky Atlas Hawaiian Astronomical Society Constellations: Stories and a Deepsky Atlas HAS Home Search All Sky Maps Constellations Listing Deepsky Listings Jay Wrathall's Messiers The Hawaiian Astronomical Society Storybook and Deepsky Atlas is a long term effort to provide a good online atlas of the heavens, combined with photographs of significant objects, and their descriptions. A second goal involves mapping the sky, using the following plan: Each constellation will receive a wide area map. There follows more detailed maps of the constellation, beginning in its northeast quadrant, and moving counter-clockwise around the constellation. Obviously, we had to make allowances for some peculiar shapes. We thank Software Bisque's The Sky for Windows for making this possible. A third goal involves telling the story(ies) behind the constellation. Many good stories from both Greco-Roman, and other civilizations enrich our culture. We thank Kayoko Calef for much of the research in this area. Many constellations, particularly the southern ones, have no myth associated with them. For their "myth" section, I have added biographies of the scientists associated with them. We know of no other site that has attempted combining detailed maps, deepsky objects, and myth into individual constellation pages. That said, certain elements have been tried, and they need mentioning. SEDS has become a huge repository of astronomical images. Their cross-referenced Messier catalog (maintained by Hartmut Frommert ) has become the Internet standard. SEDS combines scientific data, images, and crude maps. These pages use this fine work. Thus, you will find many links to SEDS here. See also SEDS' mirror site . The Peoria Astronomical Society provides another Messier survey of the sky , as part of their Astronomical Handbook . For other deepsky image catalogs, click here . Finally, there is the Digital Sky Survey, a huge project entering its second generation. This is a monochrome CCD record of the entire sky. Generation one is a more superficial scan of the sky. Generation two achieves the depth of a longer focus 10-12" telescope. A half degree field takes up to two megabytes. You can access the survey easily through the HAS Web site, thanks to the work of Gary Ward. This is an ambitious project that will take time to realize. Meanwhile, there is already much to explore and enjoy. Return to HAS Main Menu If you have any questions about the Hawaiian Astronomical Society please (link requires javascript).

Hawaii Travel Guide Hawaii Travel Guide Places of Power, History, Mystery & Magic Written & Illustrated by Ellie and William Crowe Exploring Lost Hawaii takes the reader on an intriguing pilgrimage into Hawaii's past. It skillfully weaves a collection of stories that are both beautiful yet dark, mysterious and supernatural, and always fascinating. In Exploring Lost Hawaii , Ellie Crowe and William Crowe have created a unique and informative guidebook that provides a tour of Hawaii never seen by most visitors - and even many locals. Covering all of the major Hawaiian Islands, this book takes an unexpected route away from that of the traditional guidebook. The result is a journey into the lands of the Hawaii of old - places of powerful alii, wise kahuna, sacred heiau, and mysterious menehune. Sites of historical and cultural significance on each island are described in detail, and directions are given to each site. Exploring Lost Hawaii will take you on a journey through a Hawaii that will not be easily forgotten. Excerpts from Columnist Bob Krauss' ReviewHonolulu Advertiser, Saturday April 28, 2001 "...a laudable purpose, introducing visitors to Hawaiian culture by viewing ancient sites...A good deal of research went into this book, and Ellie Crowe cites her sources. In addition, she adds her personal experiences at the sites, or that of someone who lives nearby. It's an effective technique that bridges the gap between ancient culture and today. William Crowe consistently finds a way with light and perspective to take dramatic photos of heiau ruins, healing stones and bare lava carved with petroglyphs. This isn't easy." About the Writer & Photographer Ellie and William Crowe have explored every continent and lived in Australia, South Africa, and the U.S.A. Islands are their favorite places. For the last twelve years they have traveled the Hawaiian Islands and read extensively about Hawaii's history and legends. They are members of the Hawaiian Historical Society. Ellie is an author whose books include Little Princess Kaiulani in Her Garden by the Sea and The Littlest Paniolo . A commercial real estate broker and photographer, William holds liberal arts and law degrees from the University of Sydney, Australia. He is president of Regent Asset Management Inc., an investment and management company. Their work is featured in both the Travel Channel's "Places of Mystery" series and the History Channel's "Haunted Hawaii" series. The authors have three children and live in Honolulu, Hawaii. Here, it often seems as if the past and the present exist simultaneously. One of the island’s most popular cultural attractions is the Kalokoeli Fishpond, where ancient Hawaiians once practiced a remarkably sophisticated form of aquaculture. As many as 60 of these fish ponds once operated along the southern shore, and most of them were constructed at least 700 years ago. Another must-see is the Iliiliopae Heiau, one of the largest ancient temple platforms in all of Hawaii. Set deep within a thriving forest, this historic site offers a palpable sense of wonder and spirituality. : Ancient Art of Surfing : Interactive Hula Dancer : Find Cultural Events : Historic Places M EETINGS & C ONVENTIONS | T RAVEL T RADE R ESOURCES | M EDIA C OMMUNICATIONS Corporate Information | Contact Us | Privacy Policy | Terms & Conditions | ©2005 Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau
