The Big Island is in a 50 year time warp and so may be this hotel. The term "resort" was probably more useful for this hotel in years past. Now with the huge mega resorts north of Kona on the Kohala coast, this lodging retracts to a simple hotel with some amenities. The closest things to frills that could be used to label this property as a resort would be the tennis courts, the three eating locations, and its spot directly on the Pacific. But if you're expecting more than this, beware! The pool is tiny and surrounded by only a small number of deck chairs, the parking area takes up most of the grounds, staffers are few and far between, and there's a $5 daily parking fee on the premises. But on a positive note, the property adjoins a very popular black sand snorkeling beach which fills up real early on weekends, and is only a mile or so north of the Keauhou Shopping Center. And a mile and a half down the road toward Kona town is popular Magic Sands Beach, with Kona, itself, only another 2 1/2 miles farther on. Kona is not really walkable, so if you're without a vehicle inquire at the desk for scheduled transportation. The rooms, themselves, are OK and most have a lanai. There are lots of rooms here, so try to negotiate for an ocean view upgrade if you can. However, a few cautions: if you arrive late, there are no vending machines and it's not easy to find a restaurant (or any other shop) in the near vicinity open past 11 (there's a 24-hr Safeway in Kona). Also, the directions to the hotel from the air terminal route you through Kona town via Palani and, then, Alli Drive. That's direct, but awfully crowded by day and extraordinarily dark in the late evening. I found it better to drive the 8 miles on 11 to the Keauhou turnoff, and follow the road to the right around the shopping center directly to the resort on the left. It's much quicker and safer. The rooms were a little bit worn but we had a oceanfront view which was gorgeous. From our balcony, we could look down into the tidal pools and watch turtles & fish of all varieties. It was like a view you would get when snorkeling. The snorkeling beach next door is public and a little crowded but the snorkeling is one of the best on the island. You can swim with the turtles (but don't touch or bother them in any way!!. Remember these are not sand beaches. The pool area was very nice, but not large & fancy.There is no hot tub. Like all pool areas there was a shortage of lounges. Get there early and save one with a towel, then go get breakfast. They have a great breakfast buffet. Ours was included in our package. The bar/lounge was very nice with great staff and also had a great view of the turtles. There is a nice activity desk (Expedia)with helpful people. We had dinner at the resortone night which was good. All the prices are typical resort prices. They also had a very nice gift shop. The beach/pool restaurant and bar is also very nice. They charge $5/day parking which we didn't like. They will valet for you but then you need to tip as well as pay the $5, But that's what we did just for the convenience and because we were on vacation. We really liked the place!! I went to Hawaii with my sister and a friend and Kona was our first stop. I'm glad we stayed at this hotel. We had a standard room with a partial ocean view. The rooms were reasonable size and the layout was great. The location is gorgeous and it's right on the beach, rocky, not sand. The first morning we had a free breakfast sponsored by the activity guest, and they talked about all the tours and excursions available. The lady who spoke was very knowledgeable, and the talk really helped us to decide what should see and we can skip....keep it up!! The staff service was reasonable, although the day we checked in we called for maintenance and the guy showed up one and a half hour later, after we called 3 times, and had to make a trip down to reception the fourth time. Apart from this, we had a pleasant stay and would definitely stay there again!! Just returned from 8 days at OKBR. If you're not finicky, there is good value here. Like others who have posted, the place could use a little "umpf" But since you're gone most of the day does it really matter what color the paint, or condition of the carpet ? Our room was more than adequate with coffee maker, refrigerator, clothes iron, security safe, lanai, big shower. We shopped before booking and figured we saved over $60 per day and got more amenities. Our standard garden view still had an ocean view without paying the upgrade, plus received the 5th night for free. The Kama'aina Terrace restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet, worth the $13.95. We only ate one dinner here, Fridays prime rib-seafood dinner buffet. At $34.95 it was only so-so. Most regular dinner prices run $18 to $35. Bar drinks run $8.00, do your own in-room. I can recommend lunch at the Kalanikai Grill. Good burgers or fish and chips at $8.00 in an ocean side setting. There is a mall within a mile of here that has fast food and grocery stores. Buy your pop, booze, and munchies and eat in room. Look around for other dining options. Tennis courts, swimming pool, and exercise room available. Next door to the resort is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Go to Snorkel Bobs on Alii Dr. to rent your gear for $9.00/week. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone. However, our room (#645) was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. Carpeting should be clean so that I can walk comfortably barefooted. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked one day and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. Maid service was poor two times: Left used glasses on the table and left used towels in the bathroom floor, yet they took the other used towels. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sunset and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. Nightly entertainment was quite enjoyable. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Also, Kahaluu beach, next to the hotel, is the BEST place for snorkeling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, Moorish idols, triggerfish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi! An internet cafe is there too. Overall we did enjoy our stay, but again, would like to see the place upgraded. Maybe there are other rooms that are refurbished. Ask before you book. One last thought: We spent five nights there. I think the next time we will book a condo like we did when we visited Kauai. This way we could have a kitchen to cook our breakfast and have a more comfortable place to stay. The ship is in the middle of a 14-day cruise that terminates in San Diego this weekend. However, the Infinity's propulsion system developed problems and will go in for replacement when it calls at San Diego. Passengers booked on the Hawaii cruise will get a full refund of charges and a free Celebrity cruise of 10 days or less to be used within a year. Travel agents will get a $50 commission for rebooking a customer. Celebrity Cruises' parent Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said the cancellation would cause a 3- to 4-cent decrease in the company's earnings. Collections - Special - North American Indian and Native Hawaiian About special collections North American Indian and Native Hawaiian Quilt Collection [ click here to see samples ] Native quilters in the Hawaiian Islands and on the North American continent have long used colors and designs distinctly their own to make quilts which function in ways both similar to other cultural groups as well as in ways that have specific tribal or pan-Indian meanings. Quilts have been used in nearly every Native community for everyday purposes such as bed coverings, shelter coverings, infants' swing cradles, weather insulation, and providing a soft place to sit on the ground. In some communities, quilts are also used to honor individuals, in ceremonies, and in a variety of activities that strengthen community life. Native peoples in the Hawaiian Islands and North America have always had many indigenous traditions of textile production and use; the materials and skills of quiltmaking had many precedents in these communities. When commercially-manufactured cloth and steel needles became available to native peoples, it was not surprising that, adept at similar craft forms, they quickly picked up quiltmaking. Native needleworkers continually combine or replace old materials and technologies with new. Finger-woven animal pelt blankets have been replaced by wool blankets and quilts, hides replaced by cotton fabrics, and awls and needles replaced by sewing machines and rotary cutters. The initial conveyance of quilting skills to Native peoples occurred in the nineteenth century with the establishment of mission schools and churches in Native communities. Numerous references in missionary diaries and letters, mission records and newsletters, and oral histories point to the substantial influence that Christian denominational mission churches and schools had in introducing quiltmaking to Native peoples. Through both formal instruction and in the context of affiliated women's social groups, missions promoted Euro-American domestic arts, including quiltmaking and other forms of needlework. Whether Mennonite missions on Hopi land, Mormon missions in Utah and Nevada, Quaker mission schools in Pennsylvania, or Catholic missions in frontier outposts, these Christian evangelical and educational efforts were instrumental in introducing and sustaining interest in these crafts. Within Native communities, quilts are often used to mark rites of passage or special occasions and to honor individuals for their special achievements or contributions. At naming ceremonies, quilts are given to friends and family in honor of the loved one being named. Students graduating from high schools or college are given quilts as a sign or recognition of their academic accomplishments. Athletes winning competitive events are given quilts for their physical achievements. Veterans returning from military service are honored with quilts to thank them for their bravery and personal sacrifice. Any one who has contributed significantly to his or her own, family's or community's well being is honored, either by being given a quilt or having quilts given away on their behalf. Production techniques (patchwork, appliqué, quilting, tied work), material preparation (batting, recycling cloth), patchwork patterns, quilting designs, and quilt names were shared among Native and non-Native quiltmakers. Yet choices of patterns, construction techniques, materials, and names often are tied to Native or tribal identity. Native artists adapt the beadwork, rug weaving, and basket weaving patterns of their cultural heritage of their own experience into their quilts. Color choices often reflect the Native quilter's close spritual ties to the natural world. Many times Native quilters, irrespective of their own tribal background, will select printed fabrics that incorporate Southwestern or pan-Indian imagery, such as eagles, running horses, or motifs from or resembling those of Navajo rugs. Of all the discrete collections of the MSU Museum's quilt collections perhaps the most important is the collection of North American Indian and Native Hawaiian quilts. Several museums have one or a few samples of Native quilts and a handful of museums have quilts specializing in the quilts of one culture or tribe (for instance Native Hawaiian or Lakota Sioux) but no other musuem in the world has a collection that not only represents the breadth and diversity of Native quilting in North Amercia but also is accompanied by documentary information resulting from historical and ethnographic research. There are a number of reasons why Native quilters have been so little known to those outside their families or communities and that museums have so few examples in their collections, but perhaps the chief reasons were that it is an art form that has appeared so extensively in everyday life and that it was primarily the result of indigenous cultural contact with outsiders. Considered commonplace and perceived firmly tied to a European rather than a Native artistic tradition, quilts, unlike other Native arts, were historically not collected or studied as items of ethnographic, aesthetic, or marketplace value. In addition, most quilts made within Native communities were made for everyday use; even those made and given in ceremonies were intended for everyday use. Thus, there are few extant historical quilts in either private or public collections. The first Native American quilt acquired by the Michigan State University Museum was one documented in a Michigan Quilt Project Discovery Day in 1985. The quilt, made c. 1920 by Margaret (or Anna) David, an Odawa quilter, from Peshawbestown, Michigan has distinctively Woodland Indian floral motifs in the corners and sides of a traditional Star quilt pattern. It was donated by a non-Native family who had acquired it from its maker. Subsequent research has uncovered five more quilts done in this style and has revealed that the quilter was probably affiliated with a group of women who quilted together in the basement of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Peshawbestown, Michigan, a community where Ojibwa and Odawa had long resided. Additional research by museum staff on Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi quilting resulted in the collection of narratives, photographs, and quilts documenting the long-time engagement in quilting by many Native women in the region. Working in tandem with the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian, Atlatl (the national service organization for professional Native artists), and many tribal museums as well as quilters, collectors, and other scholars, the Michigan State University Museum staff continued to document Native quilting traditions throughout the United States and Canada.
