Hawaiian Astronomical Society - Deepsky Atlas Hawaiian Astronomical Society Constellations: Stories and a Deepsky Atlas HAS Home Search All Sky Maps Constellations Listing Deepsky Listings Jay Wrathall's Messiers The Hawaiian Astronomical Society Storybook and Deepsky Atlas is a long term effort to provide a good online atlas of the heavens, combined with photographs of significant objects, and their descriptions. A second goal involves mapping the sky, using the following plan: Each constellation will receive a wide area map. There follows more detailed maps of the constellation, beginning in its northeast quadrant, and moving counter-clockwise around the constellation. Obviously, we had to make allowances for some peculiar shapes. We thank Software Bisque's The Sky for Windows for making this possible. A third goal involves telling the story(ies) behind the constellation. Many good stories from both Greco-Roman, and other civilizations enrich our culture. We thank Kayoko Calef for much of the research in this area. Many constellations, particularly the southern ones, have no myth associated with them. For their "myth" section, I have added biographies of the scientists associated with them. We know of no other site that has attempted combining detailed maps, deepsky objects, and myth into individual constellation pages. That said, certain elements have been tried, and they need mentioning. SEDS has become a huge repository of astronomical images. Their cross-referenced Messier catalog (maintained by Hartmut Frommert ) has become the Internet standard. SEDS combines scientific data, images, and crude maps. These pages use this fine work. Thus, you will find many links to SEDS here. See also SEDS' mirror site . The Peoria Astronomical Society provides another Messier survey of the sky , as part of their Astronomical Handbook . For other deepsky image catalogs, click here . Finally, there is the Digital Sky Survey, a huge project entering its second generation. This is a monochrome CCD record of the entire sky. Generation one is a more superficial scan of the sky. Generation two achieves the depth of a longer focus 10-12" telescope. A half degree field takes up to two megabytes. You can access the survey easily through the HAS Web site, thanks to the work of Gary Ward. This is an ambitious project that will take time to realize. Meanwhile, there is already much to explore and enjoy. Return to HAS Main Menu If you have any questions about the Hawaiian Astronomical Society please (link requires javascript). Maui WindsurfingMaui's windsurfing shops Maui's Windsurfing Shops Candy.. .It's all sweet, but it's a question of flavor. There is no place on earth with the selection and service as the windsurfing shops of Maui. Highly competitive, and eager to help you have fun, Maui's shops are stocked with the latest and greatest rental fleets and merchandise. Half the fun of preparing for a trip to Maui is investigating the shops. I encourage you to ask your friends about their experiences with particular shops and keep in mind that other shops you may have not heard about could be pleasant surprises. None of the shops listed here are lacking in any way. It may be no more than, " you like the guys at the counter " that makes one shop more attractive to you than another If yer asking me what I think personally? I like them all. I stand on my personal reputation when I say that the people of Maui' s windsurfing retail are all the kind of guys (and gals) you'd love to sail and party with. The shops are listed in the order that they submitted their responses to me. We also have a great selection of high performance surfboards to rent. From 10' longboards to 6' shortboards. Rental Equipment Prices... 7 day board/rig and two sails (exchangeable at any time) I have decided that publishing the prices may begin a cheesy price war and get me in trouble on this small island. I will tell you that the prices vary from $240-$280 . Prices also fluctuate according to time of year. (It's more in the summer when the shops are rockin and less in the very sailable winter months) Although it is not published anywhere...Many shops have an attitude discount. Smiles count for a lot on Maui.I urge you to consider minor price differences as insignificant relative to service and equipment offered. Check out all the shops for the best value before you decide.. The smart thing is to call around well in advance. Particularly in the summer season. OK, bitch at me. Price for 30 days rental? Again, the shops vary only slightly from one another. the range is $540-$570 What is your policy on damage to rental gear? HI: We offer insurance to clients for damaged equipment. In unusual circumstances, we will refund. WR: If equipment is out it is counted as a day sailed CB: No wind day, no charge MWC: We only charge for days actually used. Below, a quilt on display this weekend. Stitches in Time One of the goals of the Hawaiian quilting festival this weekend is to perpetuate the cultural art form By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto Star-Bulletin IT'S a quilting bee to beat the band. This weekend's inaugural Hawaiian Quilt Festival at Blaisdell Center offers a patchwork of activities. Displays, exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, a marketplace and hands-on practice cover each step in the quilting process - pattern tracing, cutting, laying out, pinning, basting, hemming or appliqueing, and quilting. "We'll have old quilt patterns and dressmaker's tracing paper for purchase at $2 for a two-yard sheet," said Augusta-Helen "Aunty Gussie" Bento, president of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project and co-chair of the three-day festival. "It's enough to trace one large quilt design and a couple of small designs. The patterns themselves stretch out to 40 or 48 inches." Bento said different quilt patterns will be available Saturday and Sunday, plus pencils for general use. "Then, people will be able to quilt on a horse that's there for community quilting," she said. Oahu and neighbor island quilters will lead workshops, such as stencils, Hawaiian tropical placemats, Hawaiian quilt pillow, miniature Hawaiian quilt, and designing a Hawaiian quilt. Cost will range from $26.50 to $75. Co-chair Elaine Zinn said festival goals are three-fold - "to help the public understand what the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is about, to perpetuate the art of Hawaiian quilting so that it continues to grow, and to let people know how to take care of their quilts, because our environment and insects are so threatening to textiles." The 16-year Research Project has documented and registered more than 900 quilts and 700 quilt patterns on all islands. People will be able to sign up at the festival for future registries. "The project is important to preserve the history of Hawaiian quilts," said Zinn, who produced the 13-part public television "Hawaiian Quilting" series, "and to preserve the actual quilts that are still with us, so they will last a few more generations. They are very precious." "It was the greatest show of friendship to share one's quilt patterns," said Elizabeth Akana, who can conjure a genteel picture of tutu (grandmothers) with flowers in their hair, gathered on a porch to share snitches of gossip and stitches of colorful threads. "The quilts are enlightening us about our history and bringing about a love of history, because when you're dealing with a quilt you've got to have love in your heart," Akana said. Meanwhile, people can take their own paper and pencil, and trace quilt patterns at Waianae Library, which has a prodigious collection of 400 patterns, with more patterns yet available at Kailua Library and Brigham Young University-Hawaii collections. Akana said of Hawaii's unique quilting process and product: "We're looking at love in fabric and thread." With white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, Maui is ideal for sunbathing, snorkeling and snoozing! But once you’ve gotten enough sun, Maui’s also a great place for shopping and sightseeing. The old whaling town of Lahaina is home to many quaint shops and eclectic art galleries. On the opposite side of the island, the long road to Hana will lead you to the waterfall fed pools at Oheo Gulch, a perfect place to stretch your legs and take in the view. After touring the island, you may need to unwind in Wailea with a pampering spa treatment.
