Molokai, Hawaii - History and Culture on The Most Hawaiian Island. One and a half million years ago (give or take a week) two large volcanoes pushed through the surface of the Pacific Ocean and created the island of Molokai. Kamakou in the east, and Maunaloa in the west. A couple days later a third and much smaller caldera, Kauhako, popped up to form the Makanalua peninsula on the north side. Over eons, the north side of the island eroded and fell into the sea, leaving behind the vertical sea cliffs which today make up most of Molokai's spectacular North Shore. It's the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago; 260 square miles (420 sq km) in area, 38 miles (61km) long, and ten miles (16km) wide at its widest point. Anchored in the center of the 8 major islands, Molokai is 25 miles (40km) southeast of Oahu, and a 25-minute flight from Maui. From the eastern end of the island, it's only 8 miles (13km) across the Pailolo Channel to Maui. The population is estimated at 8,000 residents, half of whom live in or near the principal town of Kaunakakai. Nearly 40% are of Hawaiian descent, thus the nick name, "The Most Hawaiian Island." According to the experts, Hawaiians first came to live on Molokai about 650 A.D. Those first settlers most likely originated from the Marquesas, with later migrations, in double hulled canoes, from Tahiti and other areas in the South Pacific. As the Hawaiians had no written language, most of their pre-contact history has come from chants, passed down from generation to generation, which have kept a chronology of events, battles and genealogy. In November, 1778, Captain James Cook sighted Molokai on his first visit to the Sandwich Islands, as he named these islands, but it wasn't until 1786 when Captain George Dixon anchored off Molokai's coast, that Europeans first visited this island. In 1832 a Protestant mission was established at Kalua'aha on the East End by Reverend Harvey Hitchcock, to serve an estimated population of 5,000. His church has not been maintained, but the walls and part of the roof stand today at the 14.5 mile marker. A white marble headstone marks his grave on the hill east of what remains of the church. The oldest known Hawaiian settlement on Molokai occurred in Halawa Valley, at the eastern end of the main highway that crosses the length of the island. The eastern side of the island was heavily populated in pre-contact Hawaii, a result of ample water from the mountains, fertile and level land for farming, and a rich and abundant ocean. More than 60 fish ponds were built along the south shore of Molokai. Most have nearly disappeared, but a few have been reconstructed and are used daily by residents for aquiculture. A drive along the southshore of the island bears testimony to the reliance on the ocean by early Hawaiians. Molokai was renowned for the wisdom and power of its religious leaders, greatly respected and often feared by others in the archipelago. In the 1500s, the famous prophet, Lanikaula, was so revered that pilgrims came from all the Islands to seek his wisdom and advice. Molokai became a place of retreat, protected from war by its religious prestige and the marital alliances of its chiefs. Others were reputed for sorcery. Legend tells of the Kalaipahoa, or poisonwood gods, entering trees on Maunaloa. The grove is said to have been so poisonous that birds fell dead as they flew over it. Legend also tells us that Laka, goddess of the hula, gave birth to the dance on Molokai, at a very sacred place in Ka'ana. This is recognized on Molokai every May, at a celebration of the birth of hula, called Ka Hula Piko. When Laka died, her remains were secretly hidden somewhere beneath the hill, Pu'u Nana. The hula was finally established, the work of Laka was complete, and the dance flourishedthroughout Hawaii. Molokai was praised as "Molokai Ka Hula Piko," Molokai, the center of the dance. This design, by John Kaimikaua and Wainwright Piena, uses traditional Hawaiian motifs to depict the essence of the saying, "Molokai Ka Hula Piko." To the early Hawaiians the mo'o (lizards) were a symbol of spirituality and good fortune. The central design depicts this spiritual continuity with the mo'o arranged in a circle. The triangle depicts a Hawaiian value called "Lokahi," which is symbolic of a balance between man, nature, and God. Petroglyphs within the triangle portray a man and woman in dance. In the uppermost part of the triangle is a rising sun with a dot in the center symbolizing the piko of the hula. Beneath the circle is a motif depicting water, while at the top, the triangles represent fire. In the real world, water and fire are the two elements that cannot be mixed, but the spiritual essence of these elements mix in the hula. The ancient kumu hula of Molokai stressed to their students that they should dance with the fluidity of water and with the spark of fire. The middle row of diamonds, is a design called by the Hawaiians "na maka ke akua," or "eyes ofthe gods." Eyes are symbolic of the past, because our ancestors look upon us and guide us in thislife. Eyes also represent the living, as we look back upon the paths of our ancestors for inspirationand guidance. The hula provides a means for us to look back to the works of our ancestors through its movements, motions and chants. Above the "na maka ke akua" design are ferns representing the greenery worn by the dancers and below is the half-circle-point motif representing the rays of the sun rising in the east. To the early Hawaiians, the rising sun was symbolic of constant renewal and rebirth in the hula. Moloka'i is only 10 miles wide and 38 miles long. Carved sharply from the mountains to the sea, its northern sea cliffs are the highest in the world; its West End plains descend gently across ranchlands and deer hunting preserves to clear waters and the longest, least crowded of the accessible beaches in Hawai'i. Moloka'i's shoreline road on the East End presents surprises around every bend, with ancient Hawaiian fishponds, taro farms, mango patches, and incredible inlets and bays with surf Hawai`i's longest beaches­ Moloka`i's West End spots and fishing. At the end of the road, you reach Halawa with its valley walls, waterfalls, meandering stream and Hawaiian village. In the center of the island on the southern coast, the longest pier in Hawai'i extends past reef to a dock where a ferry travels to and from Maui. The main town of Kaunakakai is nearby, with an historic church row and village life. Highway 470 ascends up the mountain for the spectacular lookout to Kalaupapa, a tongue of land extending into the Pacific below the sea cliffs. The isolated village welcomed Father Damien in the 1870s to help the residents, victims of what was then called leprosy. When leaving Ho'olehua Airport, the a sign reminds you that Moloka'i roads, which have no stoplights, are a place to "Slow Down"- one of the reasons many people come to Moloka'i. At Ho'olehua, visit the Purdy family of Hawaiian homesteaders who grow macadamia nuts, harvesting and cracking them for your enjoyment right before your eyes in the shade of mac trees. At Kualapu'u, see Coffees of Hawai'i, which grows Muleskinner and Malulani Estate Coffees and offers mule wagon rides through the plantation. The place to eat in the area is Meyers Sugar Mill & Museum the Kualapu'u Cookhouse, with its home-style cooking, catering and baking of pies and cakes. Continuing up 470, the Kalae Highway, the diversity of Moloka'i becomes apparent as the green hills turn into forests opening up to spectacular ocean views. The R. W. Meyer Sugar Mill (circa 1878) offers a look at an early pioneer who married into a Hawaiian family and developed agriculture. The old mill is on the National Register of Historic Sites. On the grounds is Moloka'i Museum & Cultural Center, which conducts tours and offers classes. Up Kalae Highway is the barn for Moloka'i Mule Ride, which carries visitors down the 1,700-foot Kalaupapa Trail. Kalaupapa can also be reached by small plane. Daily tours are led by Damien Tours. To see Kalaupapa Peninsula from above, continue to the end of Kalae Highway and walk a short path through Pala'au State Park to Kalaupapa Lookout. Interpretive signs explain the history. Nearby, the Phallic Rock is the subject of many legends about fertility. Halawa Valley on Moloka`i's East End Heading back down Highway 470, visit the R.W. Meyer Ltd., which owns 1,800 acres with hiking, mountain biking, fishing and nature treks by 4-wheel drive. When traveling to Kalae, see the Meyer Gate, 610 mile past mile marker 7. Nearby is the 9-hole Ironwood Hills Golf Club. Where Hwy. 470 makes a 'T' with Hwy 460, take a left and head east for a drive along Church Row as you enter Kaunakakai, the main town on the island. Kaunakakai offers shopping, a variety of dining, and the Kaunakakai Wharf, the major shipping center and transportation link, by ferry, on the Maui Princess. See the Giant Banyan Tree at Pau Hana Inn and drive along Kamehameha V (Hwy. 450) to view Keawanui and other ancient fishponds where Hawaiians practiced aquaculture. Wagon ride to ancient heiau Two churches were built by Father Damien on Moloka'i's East End. They are well marked, as St. Joseph Church and Our Lady of the Sorrows Church. One of the largest heiau (Hawaiian temples) in the state, Ili'ili'opa'e, is located near Puko'o, and a Hawaiian family takes visitors by horse-drawn wagon on an interpretive tour, designed for individuals or groups. Moloka'i Horse & Wagon Ride also offers prearranged activities and an informal Hawaiian picnic on the beach next to the largest mango patch in Hawai'i. At Moloka'i's far East End is the verdant Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, with charming ranch buildings. Known for their interest in preserving Hawaiian culture and endangered species, the ranch offers guest rooms to travelers with reservations. Purdy's Hawaiian Homes macadamia farm As you approach the end of Kamehameha V Highway, the scenic drive becomes more winding and the coast more rugged. The tiny, turtle-shaped isle of Mokuho'oniki is just offshore. As you descend into Halawa Valley there are beautiful lookouts and the mouth of the stream is a wonderful place to rest. The walking trail up the valley is closed to the public. (Left) Father Damien's church at Kalaupapa, (right) Touring coffee fields by mule wagon The highway ends at Halawa, marking the beginning of the inaccessible North Shore and the world's highest sea cliffs. The deep valleys were agricultural centers of old Hawai'i with taro patches and many house sites. Today, the valleys are visited by hunters, fishermen and paddlers of kayak and canoe. It is best to find a guide, as the coast is very rugged. The return road trip from Halawa to the airport is 37 miles, and is most enjoyable driven leisurely, taking several hours for scenic stops. (above) Moloka`i Made: Muleskinner Coffee (right) The famous Moloka`i Mule Ride Moloka'i's West End is a short drive along Hwy. 460. The road climbs the gentle slope of Maunaloa, birthplace of hula, and descends to the sunny side. Take the right fork onto Kaluakoi Road to beaches of Papohaku and Kepuhi. Kaluakoi Resort offers an 18-hole championship golf course, accommodations, tennis, and ocean activities. Adjacent Papohaku Ranchlands is a community of homes and ranches for people who enjoy sun, serenity, trails, wildlife and beaches. Papohaku Beach Park is excellent for strolling on the longest, widest sandy beaches in Hawai'i. At nearby Maunaloa Village, visit Moloka'i Ranch Outfitters Headquarters for a safari through Moloka'i Ranch Wildlife Conservation Park. The ranch offers trail rides for ranch guests and has the best rodeo arena in the state; you learn to be a wrangler. Ask about hiking through the rangelands and places to stay. Maunaloa Village has shops and places to buy snacks. It is a quaint town, with a history dating back to the early cattle industry in Hawai'i. It offers beautiful views of the coast and spectacular sunsets for the end of your day.

This is a problem in Wailea where you're more or less dependent on your hotel. When we first checked in we loved the view and the balcony, and the place was huge. However we got tired of having to pay resort prices, but still had to drive down the hill to find an open restaurant or bar, or even go to the beach. The Japanese-style baths were cold and not relaxing. I have been to hot spring baths in Japan, and that is an inviting and invigorating experience. This was not. There is also a normal pool and hot tub, but they are only open until 6 pm! There are three restaurants: two Japanese, and one Italian. The Japanese-French one is not really haute cuisine like they make it sound. That's probably why the restaurant is almost always completely empty. The Italian restaurant is a little more lively, and we enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor bar there, but it doesn't stay open late like other bars in Maui. We didn't visit the third, because it was always closed. The condo has a Japanese-style shower-room and separate toilet room. These could have been cleaner, or updated. The kitchen was very small with a mini electric stove and no oven, no microwave, no dishwasher, no dish drainer. And you had to rent a set of pots that didn't include much. The refrigerator was tiny and filled with frost, and froze all our food, so we didn't cook very much in the room. The king bed really is two twins pushed together. I couldn't believe it. The employees were very nice, though it's true that not many spoke English well enough to give you tourism advice or directions. I think that's a primary function of any hotel and shouldn't be overlooked. The grounds are well kept and the sunsets are a glorious sight from your balcony. It's very quiet with no children and I appreciated that. But as we visited other Wailea resorts throughout the week, and sat on their beaches with tropical drinks, and ate at fun restaurants, and watched people relax on loungers at the pool all day, I couldn't help but feel that was the Maui experience we had wanted to have, and the Diamond was just lacking. My advice is either to pay more for a true Wailea resort on the beach, or stay in a friendly condo in laid-back Kihei. The grounds are okay, but the grounds next to the rooms were unattended too and unpleasant to see. The bathroom shower needed to be cleaned (by myself) with a pot scruber. The need to rent kitchen materials was a major disppointment and let down. The microwave also had to be rented. Such items are standard in places where we have paid 125% less. The Japanese dinning was great on service, small on food and a bit too costly to us. The spa area was the highlight of the stay. The 'body shower' and 'waterfall' were just what the body ordered! The need to pay for gym sessions with a personal trainer were also a disappointment. On vacation, we generally want to work out at our leisure, not be subjected to unwarrented training sessions. After paying for an overprice room the additional charges for all of the other basic items made this a place that we will not return. This was the perfect change of pace resort after a long flight from the east coast. The free spa is tremendous and relaxing (I hit it every night and my 17 year old had a facial and massage that made her trip - $100), and the rooms (really suites) were so clean and spacious. The property is large measured by land but very small measured by number of rooms, so you really get great treatment by the staff buy can hide away by yourself for peace and quiet if that's what you want. My daughters went to the Japanese restaurant at the resort and said it was the best. They also have a renowned Italian restaurant there, but I didn't try it. My one criticism is the king bed really isn't a king but two beds together, and the pillows were not great. And here is a tip...if you're older and/or don't walk very well, make sure you tell them so they can put you in a room that is close to the main level. The property is dramatically placed on a hill, so the lower you are the closer you are to the ocean but the more you have to walk up and down the hill. My kids were in building 20 and we were in building 1, and there room was much better than ours in term of walking and panoramic view. Even with these quirks, I give The Diamond Resort 4.5 stars; I knew my wife and I would love the place when I booked it, but I was shocked at how much my children loved it too. The rooms are spacious and though we had a Garden View Room all rooms are ocean facing and we had a partial view of the ocean from the first floor. We enjoyed lovely sunsets from our location. The bed was MASSIVE and I loved the two white spa robes that were provided. And it was so cute that they provided a green tea set along with american coffee cups and coffeemaker. Whatever coffee or green tea we used was replenished daily by the maid service and our tea/coffee cups were cleaned by the service. It may be a minor inconvenience to rent cookware for $4 a day - but the cost is really nominal, and frankly who cooks all that much on vacation? The kitchen (more of a kitchenette) was really rather small to create a culinary masterpiece anyway - just 2 burners and a dorm size fridge. With all the spectacular restaurants in Maui we never ran out of options in 2 weeks. Also, I wanted to address some of the earlier reviewers' comments which are really misleading. First, while I will agree that this resort caters to a primarily Japanese clientele, I spoke with the front desk staff a few times, to have them change the time of our dinner reservation, ask general questions, and schedule spa appointments - there was no barrier in communication and things were handled as requested each time. In fact, the staff was mostly Hawaiian, so it is untrue that they only understand Japanese. Second, prior to our stay at Diamond it was very clear to me that the use of their fitness facilities are only for those who are using their personal trainers. I thought this limitation was unfortunate, but this is fairly clear. Their was no information in the brochure or the DR website to make you think otherwise. Aside from this, I just wanted to mention that the views were spectacular, I had a sublime facial at their spa - it lasted over an hour, we enjoyed feeding the koi that are in all the pools and waterfalls that are woven throughout the grounds (DR sells bags of food for just a $1), and their restaurant Capisché? ranks with the top restaurants in Maui for a reason - they have an extensive wine list, sophisticated menu and delicious food. The entire resort staff was very gracious and attentive to our needs during our stay. If you are looking for tranquility, privacy and amazing views, I would highly recommend this unique experience. And it is minutes from some of the best beaches and shopping in Maui. It is also one of the most economical places to stay in beautifully manicured landscape of Wailea. Thanks!
