And I did, sorta. Eventually. I got my new fabric all washed and ready and started cutting. Unfortunately, I musta been half asleep at the time, because I cut it wrong and had to go back to the fabric store yet again! Sheesh! Fabric 6, Mokihana O. However, the next day I was much more successful, and got my applique piece all properly cut out - Mokihana 1, Fabric 6. The following day I cut out my background piece - Mokihana 2, Fabric 6 (I’m catching up!). I carefully unfolded my green ulu applique piece and voila! There it was, waiting for me to baste it onto the background fabric. I think I should get a point for that. K’den. Mokihana 3 - Fabric 6. Then, the next day of quiet basting with my friend, I got the whole pattern basted onto the background! Pau! Mokihana 4, Fabric 6. Now I am ready to start appliqueing the pattern to the background. And I fully expect to have my score keep climbing! This is turning out to be a very rewarding project for me. I feel very spiritually connected to it, feeling a real connection to Hawaiian women years and years before me designing and quilting their own works of art. I couldn’t make it out to The Gathering this week. I was buried with work and a very large truck with a cherry picker and shredder attached to it was parked in my long, narrow driveway while a crew from Portland General Electric trimmed branches from the firs, maples, alders and willows away from the power lines. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t get out; it would have been a lovely day. However, there is next week. And I have a quilt square ready to be appliqued. The colors are just what I wanted and I feel so good about starting this. It is a song to me, and I am loving the singing of it. Sep 05 '03 Author's Product Rating Food and Presentation: Ambiance and Decor: Quality of Service: Pros Tasty. Low cost. High value. Clean. Cons Parking. Only one in LA. The Bottom Line Terrific alternative to burgers and pizzas, the BBQ meat is healthier because it is less oily, too! Full Review Tired of burgers, pizzas and Gyros? Find Yoshinoya annoying? Eating at the Ono Then its time for ONOs HAWAIIAN BBQ! Located in a ubiquitous two storey strip mall on the corner of Santa Monica and Bundy on the boundary between West LA and Santa Monica, this year old fast food is quickly becoming a magnet food outlet drawing both the multitude of students, professionals, and families who live nearby. My family drives from Pasadena (20 miles east) to get out BBQ from here. While chatting with some of the other patrons, I found a couple who drove from Long Beach (15 miles south) to get the food. Ono is Hawaiian for delicious. And that only starts to describe this wonderful food. This is a fast food restaurant, so the walk up counter and food ordering procedure is exactly the same as a KFC or Carls Jr. The menu is displayed on a neon lit board behind the cashier. The kitchen can be seen through the opening where the food passes. Whats to Eat? The food choices are simple: BBQ or rice bowls. But it is in the combination of the BBQs and rice dishes that this restaurant really amazes. The restaurant specializes in plate lunches. This is a classic Hawaiian meal made up of Asian and Island dishes, including Kalbi short ribs (Korean), Mahi Mahi (Hawaiian fish), BBQ Chicken (Chinese style), Chicken Katsu (deep fried breaded Japanese style chicken), accompanied by macaroni salad and steamed rice. The restaurants menu proclaims this to be the de facto meal of choice in Hawaii and the best representation of the blend of cuisine and multi-cultures found in Hawaii. The meal takes a little while to get there because the meat is barbequed after you order, so everything is freshly cooked and not reheated in a microwave. But is it worth the wait! The Kalbi short ribs still had that smoky carmelization on the bones. At the time of this writing, this combination costs $6.69. And the portions are huge. The lunch plate fed me and my six year old and two year old, and had enough left over to share with my wife, who had ordered a more modest dish of Maui Pineapple Chicken. Weve never made it to Hawaii, but if this is what they eat there every day, its no wonder that the Hawaiians dominate the Japanese Sumo championships. There are other dishes, including a curry chicken over rice, Salmon, Hamburgers, Caesar salad, Seafood Noodle Soup, the ever present Teriyaki Chicken bowl, and an appetizer intriguingly called Spam Musubi. Unfortunately, I couldnt even con my one year old daughter into trying THAT one. Cmon honey, its made with your favorite: pork! She just turned away and started running for her mother. So I will have to update you on this one after Ive starved myself enough to want to try it. The Restaurant and the Service The restaurant has a nice high ceiling, cafeteria seating, and is well lighted, and not that full. It is very clean. Most of the people sitting around were waiting for their take out. We took about 20 minutes to eat, but there must have been at least 20 take away orders during that same period. The Korean counter girls were nice enough and even substituted the rice for macaroni (for my kids), but they definitely looked over worked. They are one of the few Asian fast food places that take credit cards. And the county health inspection report is a proudly displayed A. Whats Not to Like Well, the parking can be difficult. The forecourt of the strip mall features only 10 minute surface parking and the narrowest and smallest basement parking ramp in LA. Not recommended if you are driving anything larger than a Chrysler Neon. It would also be nice if they had a few more of these around the city, perhaps with a drive through window. You know, for those of us who are too Hawaiian to get out of our cars. Recommended Yes Kid Friendliness: Yes Vegetarian Friendly: No Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Get the Lunch Plates: 3 BBQ meats with sides of macaroni and rice. Try the Salmon. Email me about the Spam Musubi or Spam Moco. Like Vegas, there is something about Hawaii that makes couples decide they want to tie the knot. Hawaii has a number of companies that cater to young romantic couples looking to publicly declare their love by having their weddings in Hawaii. Whether you're getting married on a last minute impulse, or have known for a long time that the islands would be a perfect setting and have planned ahead of time to marry here, a number of companies are here to help you plan the perfect Hawaii wedding. There are a number of companies offering a number of Hawaii Wedding packages, some offered on a different days. Many of these wedding companies who plan your Hawaii wedding will often have the ceremonies at popular waterfront spots like Magic Island or Waialae Beach Park, which are often included in Hawaii Wedding packages. Finding a Hawaii Wedding Photographer will vary from island to island, each with their own artistic style and personal touch. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing your photographer. Aside from the obvious factors such as the location of the wedding and the backdrop you wish to have for you photos, you will want to keep travel fees and the style of photography in mind as well. Hawaii Flowers and Wedding Flowers Tuberose Leis are highly popular, as the pale cream and white flowers offer a sweet scent and can be woven in such a way where only the petals show. They are in the mid-range for costs, which also calculates into their popularity as a Hawaiian Leis for weddings. Hawaii Akaka Falls State park is on the northeastern shore of the Island, and is filled with stunning photo opportunities like the incredible Akaka Falls, which free falls for 442 feet into an eroded gorge. Hapuna Beach state park also offers lovely and picturesque backgrounds for your wedding photos. Coastal trails and pounding waves adorn the shores of this well maintained waterfront park. The Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park is the setting of the first prolonged cultural exchange that the Hawaiian people had with Captain Cook, who arrived in 1779. This park, as well as the Kohala Historical Sites, and the Lapakahi State Historic Park are great spots to add historic depth to your wedding photos. Oahu Oahu Island many Hawaii wedding ceremonies take place, with various locations to choose from. Magic Island, Waialae Beach Park, and Diamond Head Park are all places where it's free to have the wedding so there is no additional cost. Grassy knolls right by the ocean make this a perfect spot to make that most important promise. The area around Honolulu, Oahu is filled with no less than 10 different parks, offering convenient and varied locations for your outdoor Hawaii Wedding. You can drive around beforehand and find that perfect spot before you decide. Whether you prefer the elevated vistas of Wa'ahila Ridge or the peninsular beauty of Sand Island State Park, Oahu is a lovely and accessible island on which to have your Hawaiian Wedding ceremony. Maui Slightly more than a half mile of paved paths give way to lovely views of the unique geological formations of the Iao needle, also known as the Kuka'emoku in Hawaiian. The Black Sand beaches, seabird colonies, and impressive stone arches of the Wai'anapanapa State Park is a more natural and rugged scene for your Hawaiian Wedding. On your own, you can plan a small, intimate Hawaii wedding if who don't require any pomp or fuss and want to focus on the importance of the ceremony itself. Whether you decide at the last minute to get hitched or have it planned months ahead of time, you won't be lacking for options if you are considering a Hawaii Wedding. From the beautifully basic to the more elaborate occasions, Hawaii wedding packages offer you the convenience and the perfect locations, complete with romantic orchid leis, to turn your next vacation to the magical islands of Hawaii an unforgettable honeymoon. contact us | advertising with us | content licensing | privacy policy | terms of use | help (C) 2004 Destination360 All Rights Reserved Hawaii Map Select a region North America Central America South America Caribbean Hawaii Overview When to Go Events and Holidays Top 10 things to do Hawaiian History Interisland Flight Flights to Hawaii Hawaiian Islands Oahu Maui The Big Island Kauai Destinations Waikiki Hawaii Volcano Park Nai Pali Coast Waimea Canyon Pearl Harbor Hana Highway Hawaii Hotels Oahu Hotels Maui Hotels Big Island Hotels Kauai Hotels Travel Resources ATV Tours in Hawaii Hawaii Cruises Hawaiian Dinner Cruise Hawaiian Car Rental Hawaii Diving Golfing Helicopter Tour Luau Sailing Snorkeling Snuba Surfing Hawaii Weather Weddings Wedding Photographer |
