We have a very active 13 months old son. Any recommendation on baby friendly hotels or condos? There were mechanical problems and thecompany seemed to be really unorganized in terms of getting allthe passengers on other flights and in terms of keepingpassengers posted as to the status of the mechanics working onthe plane. They also failed to announce that there were freevouchers available for food at the airport during the longwait. Once we made it on the flight, I found out from aseatmate that if you ASKED for vouchers they were given out andmy husband and I had just spent about $35 of our own money onmeals. It seemed rather unfair. We sat in the airport forabout 20 hours. It was horrible and I don't think we would flythem again.The one thing they did handle well was that they gave everyonefree round trip tickets (on Hawaiian Air) to fly to Hawaii againin the next 12 months.Good luck.Julie We flew Hawaiian from SFO - HNL several times and will not usethem in the future. We had one flight where all the attendentswere fighting with each other. On another flight, where weused our free mileage, they totally messed up our reservation.On the other hand, we most recently used Aloha from OAK - HNLand we were very pleased with the customer service andprofessionalism. I think they do fly a smaller plane than otherairlines, and my partner felt quite cramped. Nonetheless,we plan to use Aloha again.Regards, Michele General Advice about Going to Hawaii From: Karen Have a great time. We went to Kauai when our daughter was 2 and Maui whenshe was 4ish. One thing I discovered both times (for different reasons) isthat our family does better when the place we sleep is delightful enough tospend a good portion of the day in. We really needed a place that wasexotic, Hawaii, versitile enough to be satisfying without driving. Whenour daughter was 2, if we spent a moderate time driving to the beautifulbeach or hike (and home again), there was lots of fussing, sleeping in thecar and then not at naps or nights. When our daughter was 4ish, she lovedbeing in charge of her environment - playing games in the cabin, drawing inthe cabin, exploring outside the cabin etc. Our ideas of driving to thebeach or the state park were met with much protest! (I was very surprised!)Luckily, we ended up in a couple of places that satisfied her age-relatedneeds and our needs to feel like we really were away from home. On Kauaiiwe stayed at Glo Manor on the north coast. We found them on the internet.We also rented a cabin at Waimea Canyon State Park. I was less contenthere because the ocean was not walkable. But the hiking is great. It isthat tropical forest surrounding. On Maui, in Hana, we rented a cabin atthe Waianapanapa State Park. Cabin are very sparsely equipped. Cabins 1-7have nice views. Our best choice for the 4 year old was the 1st floorcondo a Maalea Bay in Maui. We had a relatively calm beach, great views,lots of grandparent aged people that would chat with my daughter, somefamilies with kids. I can get phone #'s for you if you have troublefinding them. The next place we want to try is camping on Lanai. I haven'tinvestigated it much. It could be hard if there were no other kids there From: laura beth I know there are some places you can camp, but in general, camping isprohibited (and it is strictly enforced) on the beaches. So, I have noinfo really except that I know people who went over thinking, "weel, I canjust camp and I won;t get a ticket" and this is not the fact of the matter.They do ticket and will arrest. Good luck! From: Deborah Just got back from a week on Oahu with kids age 4 and 8. It was great. Westayed at a B&B in a small beach town called Waimanalo, about a half hourfrom Honolulu. I would recommend the place we stayed, called "Nalo Winds"www.nalowinds.com.For $550 for 7 nights we had the "mermaid suite," a good-sized bedroom witha queen bed, a teeny bathroom (shower only--no tub), and a large lanai(screened porch) with a double futon, table and 4 chairs, and kitchenettewith small fridge, 2 burner hotplate, microwave, toaster oven, coffeemaker. The kitchen was stocked with coffee, tea, milk, juice, fruit,yogurt, cereal, muffins. One of the things I liked most is that the lanaiopens onto a private garden with a small lawn and hammock. The rental alsoincludes the use of a wide selection of snorkelling equipment (some kidsize), adult bikes, coolers, a gas grill, washer/dryer, kiddie pool. Itsort of felt like borrowing someone's slightly funky, but comfortable beachhouse (oh, it's half a block from the beach). There's no tv/vcr, which wedidn't miss, and sound carries perfectly from the bedroom to the lanai, soit's hard for someone to take a nap in one room while others are playing inthe other room. I wouldn't think Hawaii would be a great place to camp for a week, butmaybe for part of the time. It can get really hot and also rainy. You wouldneed to get ice daily to keep food cold. Be sure to find someplace withshowers for all the sand and saltwater (some beaches have showers...) Hawaii Wedding/Honeymoon Claudia My sister is getting married in May and is planning a honeymoon in Hawaii, 5 days in Maui and 5 in Kauai. Since they're travelling on a shoestring budget, my husband and I would like to give them a gift certificate for some activity to do there -- like a snorkeling/sailing package or biking down the volcano in Maui. Does anyone have any good suggestions for activities on either island that are fun, adventurous and memorable and cost under $200? They're both active, outdoorsy types who would be willing to try pretty much anything. We also thought of treating them to dinner at a romantic restaurant so if anyone has a recommendation for a nice place for honeymooners, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help. Linda A great romantic restaurant on Kauai with amazing food is The Beach House near Poipu. It has a wonderful view (go near sunset), and the food is wonderful (but not cheap). It is a sister restaurant to A Pacific Cafe on the east side of the island, which has great food too but no view. We really enjoyed the boat/snorkeling tours we took. We did one on Kauai around the Na Pali coast (only accessible by boat or foot). On Maui, we did a snorkeling tour to Molikini, a tiny island crater. There were boats packed in the little crater, but despite the crowds the snorkeling was great (tons of fish). We booked these trips through our hotels, and I don't remember the costs. From: Christina My husband and I honeymooned on Kauai and our favorite beach on the island wasPolihale State Beach. It's the most south-westerly beach on the island that'saccessible by car, and a great place to watch the sun set. It's a long stretch of beach, and at one end the Na Pali coastline begins with it's dramatic lushgreen steep cliffs. Also there aren't many people there, since it is a bit ofa drive (5 minutes off the highway on a dirt road). Would be most convenient if you are staying in Poipu or west of Poipu. Congratulations! Wailea has internationally-acclaimed condo complexes built on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Both Wailea and Makena properties include condos on the beach and on the beautifully-manicured fairways. Kapalua and Kaanapali resorts on West Maui have many condo developments on the shore, and sprinkled among the world-class golf courses. Upcountry is zoned agricultural, and here you will find horses and cattle, farms and vegetables. Building restrictions do not permit condo developments in this region, but Pukalani is an exception. The central section of the island--the Kahului and Wailuku areas--have newer Maui condos set among older homes. Affordable Condo Rentals and Homes The resort communities of Maui are expensive. These areas are prime real estate--exclusive and upscale. Fortunately, however, there are several affordable areas nearby. On South Maui, Kihei is home to locals who work in the hotels and resorts. It also provides lodging, accommodations, and condos at budget-conscious prices. Lahaina, on West Maui, is an old whaling town, and it successfully mixes older homes with newer Maui condos. Central Maui, the civic, commercial region of the island, also offers a potpourri of types and prices of housing. With the hot tourist spots located on the southern coast of Maui (West and South Maui), the central isthmus takes care of the business of the island. Depending on location on Maui, a visitor can find a range of condos from luxury to affordable, from beach front to hillside. The Monster Sea-Based X-Band Radar Dome you may have read or heard about is at Pearl Harbor. It arrived for a paint job last week. it caused quite a stir as it came into view from around Diamond Head unannounced last Monday. I saw it last Tuesday from atop Aiea Heights and wandered down to get closer and ended up down near the Arizona Memorial Museum. It's home port is Adak, Alaska and it will keep the western skies under surveillance when it goes into operations in the Aleutians soon. From a church parking lot you can see this large dome thing is docked down at Pearl. I got down closer to the X-Band and you can see it is loaded atop the 736-foot semisubmersible ship M/V Blue Marlin. I took this shot from the launch ramp down by the Arizona Memorial Museum. The same people who wouldn't blink at spending $3.50 or more daily on a specialty coffee, can't seem to come up with a piddling donation of $25 a month to support the music that gives them so much pleasure. Even if they listen only twice a week, it comes out to a contribution of a mere $3 and change each time they listen. Now we both know that most people listen much more often than that – so it's even cheaper, especially when you consider all the hours that they listen. And having been a supporter of IRH for years continuously, I feel I have a certain right to respond to the matter in question. , Listeners are being urged to donate in order to keep IRH alive and running without you having to beg and plead each month to help out. That being said, by offering 'free' access in the beginning, until IRH had grown to an overwhelming audience of such proportions that it became evident that help was needed in the way of monthly donations. It thus became an absolute necessity in order for IRH to live on because of its own success. Consequently, listeners such as "Joel" are unfortunately just one of many of hundreds if not thousands, of cheapskates that think it is their god given right to take and not give in return just because something is there for the taking. What they don't understand is, is that it is not there for the taking, but for the enjoyment. The listening enjoyment of having a piece of Hawaii there within arms reach . A piece of Hawaii that a guy by the name of Robert Abbett provides for each and every one of us. For those of us who have been to Hawaii one time or many many times, it is a way to re-connect back to that little piece of heaven on Earth. For those who have never been there and only wish they could be, it is a way for them to be there without having to actually be there bodily but in spirit. In any event, the 'little radio station that could', from a house in Kailua Hawaii, needs all our support. If you don't believe it, turn it off and go put on your FM radio and listen to some BS music and a bunch of nonsense commercials for awhile. Maybe then you'll realize how much having Internet Radio Hawaii means to us all. Ron & Madeline Wilson Valrico, Florida Da Mokes, or more properly the Mokulua islands sit off of Lanikai beach. The island to the left is Moku Nui. To the right is Moku Iki. Both are bird conservation areas. You may land and visit the beach on Moku Nui during the day but you are not supposed to land at all on Moku Iki. Landing on and paddling out from Moku Nui can be very tricky and in fact deadly. Waves from both sides of the island wrap around the front and slap together as you make your approach. As happened on Monday 12-05-05 one can be swamped or turtled coming off the beach. Santa blessed our Daughter Amelia with a new digital camera for Christmas and on January 4th she and friends went for a hike along the Maunawili Demo Trail from Waimanalo to Maunawili. The following Tuesday was very hard for me. Every time I walked through the kitchen ( where Zig lived under the table) or through the big room where she hung out sprawled across the cool tile floor, I missed her terribly. My friend is no where to be seen. I'm crushed. I am so very much alone. Ziggy passed on over the rainbow at around 1 pm HST Monday afternoon at home in her bed under the careful hands and watchful eyes of her vet, an assistant and yours truly. I held her head in my hands and told her how good she was and how much I loved her, over and over. Ziggy was an angel in the body of a female white shepherd who kidnapped all our hearts and quickly became a member of our family. She was 13. Strangely enough, after glancing through her records it appeared that our first visit to the Vet was on Christmas Eve, 1990 and she was listed as being six weeks old. So although I don't remember the date because I wasn't there, she was born right around this part of the month of November. Ziggy was one of the smartest animals I have ever known. She learned tricks and how to use dog doors with ease and loved to play ball! She could catch incredible bounces and when younger would play and chase the darn thing for hours on end. She was obedient to a fault. She would come over and console us when we were down and had an amazing smile that would brighten any gray day. She was a great guard dog but did not just go outside and bark for the sake of barking. She came on command, she came with hand signals, she came to me sometimes with just a thought. Ziggy was a bit annoyed by our recent construction and hated the thumping noises most. She'd often retreat to the quiet of the bathroom in the old house but, she greeted all the carpenters every day with a wag, a sniff and a lick. I'm so glad she got to enjoy the big new room downstairs. I'm sorry she wasn't capable of making it up the 14 steps to the new studio. She would have dug it. I swear, she liked Hawaiian music. I left a radio on all the time in the new bathroom downstairs and I caught her groovin' on more than one occassion. You could tell. It was that special look on her face. Sheer bliss. She really liked Gabby and would react with recognition whenever she heard me rattling on about something or doing a promo. Ziggy went over the rainbow with dignity and class and a full belly of her favorite rawhide treats, a freshly brushed coat of gleaming white fur and a flood of love from a several hour petting and hangin' out session we enjoyed Monday. We also played drop catch with the ball and she never missed, even through pretty heavy cataracts. Dr. Caspar, who she greeted by jumpin' up and wobblin' over to and then licking excitedly, said she also apparently was beginning to suffer liver malfunction as her belly was filled with liquid. That made me feel better about my decision and bad too because maybe I should have done something last week. It was, without a doubt, the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. I agonized over it for the past couple months but finally, Monday with her condition deteriorating rapidly, I decided to call in the Vet. I did this for my dearest and very very best friend who was having real problems with advanced arthritis in her back legs and was hardly able to get around anymore. We exhausted all the heroics - pain pills, pain receptor inhibitors, powder and liquid glucosamines, steroids and prayers. Ziggy resting in the garage early Monday by her Big Water. My Mom and I talked Monday - (she is the dog queen and has a couple grand champions to her credit!) and she mentioned that there is a point where the human tends to go too far to keep the dog around. I didn't want to do that to her and as it turned out what with the liver disfunction and all I guess our timing was bless-ed. We love You Ziggy! We always will. We hope to play with you again one day on the other side of the rainbow.
