sample sample What plants and supplies made Hawaiian quilts? When and how did the start?The Hawaiian quilts first started when the hawai'ians held their first sewing circle on Sandwich Island. The first time they met was on April 3,1820. The ladies came from Boston and started the sewing circle. The plants used to make the designs for the Hawaiian quilts are ulu, pineapple, mum, hibiscus, wood rose, anthurium, white ginger, laua'e, heliconia, torch ginger, bird of paradise and kukui. To make the design, they study the shape of the plants and then create an exaggerated form of pattern which is beautifully symmetrical. The tools that the makers used were quilting hoops, sharp pins, bees wax, needles, art gum, scissors , dritz maker, ruler, thimbles, thread, stem ripper, pens and pencils. The quilting hoops come in all kinds of sizes. Sharp pins need to be ordinary straight pins and perfect silk pins will do the job but quilting pins are better. The art gum for cleaning spots or light penciled lines. The ruler comes in handy. Your middle finger is the pushing finger. Thimbles are important to use for your middle finger and for your thumb. It will be easier to use a thinner needle so the appliqueing of the quilt will look better. Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Elevation: 1,476 feet (450 m) - Kahoolawe 10,023 feet (3,055 m) - Maui The Island of Maui is made of two volcanoes: West Maui and East Maui.Most of the West Maui shield (20.9N, 156.6W) formed between 2-1.3 millionyears ago. A central caldera has been identified roughly in the area ofthe present-day Iao Valley. Alkalic basalts capped the volcano about 1.2million years ago. Four small eruptions occurred during the rejuvenatedstage on West Maui, probably about 1 million years ago. The volcano isdeeply dissected by numerous valleys. West Maui has not erupted inhistoric time and is considered to be extinct . East Maui Volcano, often also (but incorrectly) called Haleakala, is the easternmost of the twoshield volcanoes that make the Island of Maui. East Maui Volcano (20.7N, 156.2W)is the third largest Hawaiian shield volcano. Three rift zones can beclearly seen in the above Space Shuttle photograph(compare with map below). Most of thevolcanic activity has been concentrated along the southwest and east riftzones. The impressive Haleakala Crater is at the summit of the volcano.Haleakala Crater is an erosional caldera, formed by the coalescence ofthe heads of two large valleys as they eroded into the volcano. The mainshield of Haleakala is more than 800,000 years old. Lava flows andpyroclastics of the capping stage range in age from 930,000 to 350,000years old. Rejuvenated-stage volcanic rocks occur along the rift zonesand in the crater. The most recent eruption of Haleakala was in about1790 at La Perouse Bay. Haleakala is considered an active volcanobecause this eruption is in historic time for Hawaii. Kahoolawe (20.5N, 156.6W) is one of the smallest shield volcanoes in theHawaiian Islands. Kahoolawe is the island near the bottom of the slide.The lava flows that make the main shield are 1-2 million years old. Waveerosion has exposed a caldera on the eastside of the island . Often, however, the past itself is a key: to the future. The past is a better such key, in fact, than is the present. It is improbable that everything that can happen is happening today. Something brand new may start, of course, but something that has happened in the past is more likely to occur again, regardless of what's going on today. It is in this light that a new feature story presents the outlines of Kilauea's explosive past. Kilauea is not exploding now, but it has done so in a small way in the recent past and in a big way during the past hundreds to thousands of years. If we are to know the whole gamut of what Kilauea can do, it behooves us to examine its past as carefully as possible. Explosions can be hazardous to both people on the ground and traveling in jet airliners. The more we know about Kilauea's explosions, the better chance we have of mitigating their risk to us.
