Gardening--Fun and Frugal! by: Cyndi Roberts Whether you are an avid vegetable gardener, a beginning herb gardener or just like to have a pretty yard, these frugal tips may help you save a little money! 1. Stale coffee and coffee grounds make great organic fertilizer. They provide many trace minerals and low, gentle levels of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. 2. Remember that a good soaking of water less often is better than a light sprinkling every day -- for veggies and for your lawn. 3. If your neighbor has a plant you particularly like, ask for a cutting, instead of going to the nursery and buying one. Maybe you could trade a cutting from one of your own plants. 4. To easily water a tomato plant, bury a bottomless coffee can next to the plant and pour the water into the can. This allows the water to go straight to the roots. 5. Plant marigolds in your vegetable garden. They will attract insects that eat aphids and other pests. 6. My husband bought some used carpet at a garage sale, cut it into wide strips and laid it down between the rows in our garden. Now we can pick peas with getting our shoes muddy. 7. Use grass clippings as mulch around your vegetable plants to keep moisture in and weeds out. Just don't use the clippings right after you have fertilized your grass or treated for weed control. 8. If you have access to them, pine needles make excellent mulch. 9. A natural, frugal garden pest spray: mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Use 3 tablespoons of this mixture to 1 quart of water and spray on plants. 10. In the herb garden, to keep plants like mint from taking over too big an area, put it in a clay pot and simply plant the whole pot! "He who plants a garden, plants happiness." Once the home of a thriving pineapple plantation, Lanai has reinvented itself as an alluring resort destination offering world-class golf courses and award-winning accommodations . In ancient times, Lanai was thought to be overrun with evil spirits. A young man named Kaululaau, the son of a Maui chief, was exiled to Lanai to explore the island and deem it free of such spirits to make Lanai suitable for settling. A major chapter in Lanais history was penned in 1922, when an enterprising businessman named James Dole purchased the island for $1.1 million. Dole started growing pineapple on his island, and soon canned pineapplea new concept at the timebecame a smash hit on the mainland. In time, tiny Lanai developed into the worlds largest exporter of this succulent fruit. At one point, the island was producing 75 percent of the worlds pineapple. For decades, Lanai was celebrated as Hawaiis flourishing "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were dedicated to pineapple, and people came from far and wide to work the fields. In the late 1980s, as the pineapple industry began to wane, Lanai turned to tourism. Two luxury resorts were built: the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel . Also added were a pair of championship golf courses: the Experience at Koele and the Challenge at Manele (designed by Ted Robinson and Jack Nicklaus, respectively). Besides golf, Lanai offers many things to do and see. Go for a swim at picturesque Hulopoe Beach. Snorkel the islands cliff-lined west coast. Explore the Garden of the Gods , an intriguing rock formation reminiscent of a lunar landscape. Hunt for treasures or examine historic petroglyphs at Shipwreck Beach . Admire local artwork at the Lanai Arts & Culture Center, a prominent showcase for community arts. You can even "lock and load" at Lanai Pine Sporting Clays , the only resort sporting clays course in the state. Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Elevation: 1,476 feet (450 m) - Kahoolawe 10,023 feet (3,055 m) - Maui The Island of Maui is made of two volcanoes: West Maui and East Maui.Most of the West Maui shield (20.9N, 156.6W) formed between 2-1.3 millionyears ago. A central caldera has been identified roughly in the area ofthe present-day Iao Valley. Alkalic basalts capped the volcano about 1.2million years ago. Four small eruptions occurred during the rejuvenatedstage on West Maui, probably about 1 million years ago. The volcano isdeeply dissected by numerous valleys. West Maui has not erupted inhistoric time and is considered to be extinct . East Maui Volcano, often also (but incorrectly) called Haleakala, is the easternmost of the twoshield volcanoes that make the Island of Maui. East Maui Volcano (20.7N, 156.2W)is the third largest Hawaiian shield volcano. Three rift zones can beclearly seen in the above Space Shuttle photograph(compare with map below). Most of thevolcanic activity has been concentrated along the southwest and east riftzones. The impressive Haleakala Crater is at the summit of the volcano.Haleakala Crater is an erosional caldera, formed by the coalescence ofthe heads of two large valleys as they eroded into the volcano. The mainshield of Haleakala is more than 800,000 years old. Lava flows andpyroclastics of the capping stage range in age from 930,000 to 350,000years old. Rejuvenated-stage volcanic rocks occur along the rift zonesand in the crater. The most recent eruption of Haleakala was in about1790 at La Perouse Bay. Haleakala is considered an active volcanobecause this eruption is in historic time for Hawaii. Kahoolawe (20.5N, 156.6W) is one of the smallest shield volcanoes in theHawaiian Islands. Kahoolawe is the island near the bottom of the slide.The lava flows that make the main shield are 1-2 million years old. Waveerosion has exposed a caldera on the eastside of the island .
